Adirondack Guitar Chair Build

Decided to make a Cape Cod Guitar chair, as Iv always wanted one but have never got around to making it, until now. I really like the shape of the guitar headstock and wanted to incorporate them into the chair slats. I didn't have any power tools so did it all by hand. They are actually real tricky things to build but very cool if you can get it right. The Location is Whangamata and surrounding peninsulas in the Coromandel, New Zealand.
I drew up my own plans as all the plans I have come across have been either inaccurate or just not solid enough in construction. Took a while to get some decent plans drawn as there are many different plane angles which are tricky to calculate. I have only applied 2 coats of stain but it really needs 6, but I just didn't have the time in the end.

That is a very nice video with a good touch of humor in it. I also like the in between shots of the surroundings, nice film skills. That chair is a piece of art which certainly will survive various generations. Great!

Nicely made and solid , and it’s good to see the old tools used. Pohutukawa and Norfolk pines - I should know where this is but it looks like a great place just to sit and enjoy the views.

@elams1894
@elams1894 9 лет назад
Thanks Fletch! Yeah its amazing how long things take by hand, esp those headstocks ha ha. But I couldn't resist. I think my wood stash pales in comparison though, to that amazing inlay work on your guitar necks.. whoa! Funny story about the majority of that wood. It came from an old house that was being demo'd by a few guys that didn't even have a hammer! I had my tools with me and lent them a hammer and a massive crowbar. It turns out they didn't even want the wood, so they said I could have it if I would just take it away for them. Most of it was kauri would you believe. I told the guys to keep the tools, I bought them a couple of steak and cheese pies each.. and that was probably the most bizarre day in my life of wood salvaging. Very fortunate indeed!

Hey dude. Not quite sure what the brace is but its an awesome one, and indeed was my grandfathers. Its so smooth and the chuck is dead centre with no wobbles and the steel is fantastic and doesnt want to rust. Those old augers are a godsend too as Iv used them so much. Better steel back then I believe. It would take a fair bit of coin to replace I'm sure. Love the old hand tool stuff, thanks again!!

wow super creative with the guitar headstocks as the back slats. You should get a design patent and go on shark tank :-) What kind of wood did you end up using? It looks like Mahogany. I heard Mahogany as well as many guitar woods are like Cypress are naturally weather resistant ?
@elams1894
@elams1894 8 лет назад
+Spencer Davis Thanks Spencer! The wood I used is heart "Rimu". Rimu, or Red Pine, is a tree indigenous to New Zealand. It has beautiful straight grained wood that is very sort after in woodwork. It was used extensively in the early to middle of last century for house building. The Tree is protected now and the only wood available is reclaimed demolition Rimu. It is a softwood however the heartwood of Rimu is very hard and very much like hardwood timber. It is mildly weather resistant howver with Sikkens stain it will last for decades if not centuries. Thanks heaps!!!
