Surprise!! Time travel :) So THIS is officially the last build in the RI shop.
Plans: www.jackmanworks.com/product/...
Details! ▼
The Jackman Works adirondack chair is back! This time something a little different with a walk through video. I love how many people are using my plans to build these for themselves and I get a lot of questions so I figured this build needed a more detailed video. This was my last batch in the shop in Rhode Island, a set of 8 chairs that ended up at a college in Pennsylvania. These are made from clear grain western red cedar, fastened together with stainless steel screws and carriage bolts all from my favorite place Albany County Fasteners. It took me about 7 days in total to complete these including dry time for the finish. To learn more, be sure to check out the full build article and the plans, both available on my website.

I bought your plans but I am having a hard time getting rough cut 5/4 cedar around western PA. Do you think 3/4" cedar would work?
@hotrodhog2170
@hotrodhog2170 6 лет назад
I think he said he was going for a 1" finished thickness. So 3/4" will possibly not support a full grow man.

One of the biggest problems is the chair legs sink into the grass and rot. If cut up a car tire into rectangles little large than the legs. Screwed to the bottom with stainless steel screws. This keeps the legs off the grass and keeps the rot down.

I bought the plans several years ago,worth every penny. easy to follow, great strong design, we built several out of mahogany. they have become our favorite chairs used every day by hundreds of youth in the philippines. A big thank you

I bought the plans and templates. Well worth the money. Good quality. I made one change with the curve of the seat stringer. The curve is too far forward for the shape of my a$$ so I flattened the curve a little. Other than that I love this chair. I made a whole outdoor dining set of these. Saved thousands.

I just bought the plans and templates. Just fantastic. The plans are beautiful and easy to follow. Everything is color coded and clear. The wooden templates are going to make everything easy. I did make one error; I bought 40 linear feet of rough sawn 8” Teak. Not only was the cost a big “ouch”, but it’s ruining every blade on every machine that I own. Do yourself a favor: use cedar or similar, stay away from teak. But don’t hesitate to purchase these templates and plans, they are great, really great.

liked the return comment. was in my teens growing up in Syracuse. Those were Larry Czonka years. Moved to south Fla. and watched him play with Miami at the orange bowl. To me the greatest stadium ever. Would go and watch the Dolphins and the Hurricanes play. Syracuse will always hold a special place in my heart, but being in s fla. for so long and the Orange Bowl, well really became a Miami fan. 64 now, but going intothat old wooden stadium, 86000 plus seats, I always got the chills from just the excitement of being there. Today is a tough call, Syracuse at Miami, have grown to be a Hurricane fan. So it is tough, I just want it to be a good game, but being here so long, I really want Miami to win, but in any other case i always still root for the orange. Just wanted to be truthful. Almost 47 years in s fla. Maybe before you were born. Thats my story, and thanks for all your great builds n music.n

Well done! Articulate, easy to understand. Beautiful chair. I have built several of these over the past 30 years including a double loveseat, matching coffee table and round end tables. In fact, I sold the full size blueprints in a couple woodwork magazines and sold the plans all over the world. Best of luck to you!

I made one last year from his plans. Went very well and is very comfortable. The only thing I did different and would do again, was attach the arm rests at the front leg with pocket screws from underneath. This keeps the top face looking seamless and water doesn't have a chance to soak-in around the screw.

Love these chairs. I am a late starter in woodwork and mainly turn wood on my lathe. I have just been asked by my wife to build her some garden furniture and have watched your video a few times now, love to have a set of plans as it would make alot easier. I live in the damp UK so which would be a good wood to use. Your fan Max

Interesting to hear the breakdown of these. I've seen some of the other videos where you make them, but this was more in depth. Thanks! How does the western cedar do with sanding and such? It is like the cypress I recently worked with that gummed up all the sandpaper super quick? I've never worked with western cedar.
@JackmanWorks
@JackmanWorks 6 лет назад
Glad you like it Bruce! I've actually built some of these out of cypress too and the cedar doesn't do the damage to the sandpaper like the cypress does. Cypress is still kind of oil, which keeps the bugs away, but not as much as the cypress, that stuff destroys sandpaper haha

My Dad and I built this type chair in the early '70s. We used white oak, 3/4". He bought the pattern around 1950. Hate to say it, but the pattern came up missing after Daddy passed, along with other things. One of the most comfortable chairs I have ever sat in. Oak was $110 for 1000 brd ft, and that was dressed.
