Adjust or tighten the deck belt on your Husqvarna, Craftsman, Poulan and other lawn yard tractor mower. This is a simple adjustment for your mower deck belt that will increase the life of your belt and your spindle bearings when done properly. For a Husqvarna YTH22V46, you need a 13mm wrench.

Love your Husqvarna vids! I bought my YTA22V46 5 years ago right around when you posted your 100hr review for your YTH22V46. I was really hesitant to buy one because I thought it would be so hard to maintain. Your videos have really helped me out over the years. I had no idea I could do this adjustment. My belt comes free from the front pulley quite a bit on rough terrain, so this is a biggg help. Take care, Dennis!

Dennis, thanks for the video. I have an MTD YardMachine 1 3 A M 7 6 2 F 0 5 2 (2008.) The issue is that the blades spin at idle but do increase in speed when PTO is ON. All springs are in the proper places, but when I engage/disengage my PTO handle, the idler pulley only moves a short distance. All suggestions are welcomed to understand why blades spin at idle. Thank you
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 29 дней назад
Thank you for watching! It sounds like maybe the return spring on the idler assembly is broken, missing or just weak. There should be a spring that is attached to a pin on one end and the bracket that holds the idler pulley. Let me know if it is missing or broken and I can get you the part number and a source. If the spring is there, you might want to unhook it on one end and manually move the idler pulley assembly to see if something is binding it up, keeping it from moving like it should. I hope this helps, let me know if I can help you.

For those who don't have a cable.. I have an ancient (1960's) Murray 12ic/36, the blade lever connects underneath to a rod which has a threaded end. I think you remove the pin at the connection which allows you to turn the rod (and avoid having to remove the pin where three items (control rod, idler spring, and brake bar) are all connected. I mention this because a comment below seems to say he doesn't have this cable adjuster, so maybe this is why. Maybe. I'm currently trying to slacken the new belt I put on because the machine now makes a big bang and I release the belt immediately before it snaps or worse. New drive belt, spindles, one pulley and new blades. All security switches removed ages ago. Nobody talks about releasing tension for new belt so I think it must be summat else. Photo before removing old belt to get configuration right. Baffled.

Resolved! I remembered that even with the old belt I couldn't just start the mower and immediately engage the blades -- I'd have to let the motor warm up first. Sure enough, I gave it 5 minutes, and after a great hesitation the blades engaged and cutting commenced. (Why the Murray needs to warm up first is another matter.)

Thanks for this. But my problem is not a slack belt when it is engaged but rather when disengaged there's so much slack the belt slips off the pully. Runs fine when engaged, but falls off when disengaged. I made the adjustment you showed here but it did not change the slack when disengaged. I put a new belt on, and it has the same issue. I'm now ordering a belt that's 1.5 Inches shorter than specified to see if that works and won't fall off when slack. Any other suggestions? Thanks
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching, Sam! That would by my suggestion, try a belt that 1/2" to 1" shorter in length. Also, one thing I found with my mower.....if I release the blade PTO lever too quickly, the belt sort of bounces off the pulley and comes out from behind the guard. If I ease the blade PTO off, the belt will disengage, but not come off the pulley.

Bought a new belt and the belt seems to tight. It engages the blades even if you don't have them engaged. I had to put old belt back on. Not sure how to adjust to loosen the new belt. :(
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching, Bill! If this adjustment won't loosen the new belt enough, check the new one against your old one. I've found that parts suppliers will often give us the wrong belt, or off-brand manufacturers cheat on the size. So while they may stamp a belt as 102.5 inches, it will only be 101 inches, for example.

Thank you for watching, Dan! You can adjust it to be level, but there is no way to make it cut higher other than regular height adjustment next to the seat. One of the most common complaints I've seen about this mower is the low cutting height. Here's how to make sure your deck is level, but that's about it for adjustment: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EL2wU1v5NvM.html

Thank you for watching, Don! Sorry for the delay in answering, I hope you've been able to fix it since leaving this comment/question. If not, I'd first look at the mechanism for engaging the blades and make sure everything is in good shape, put together the way it should be etc. It might be worth taking off the deck belt and try engaging the lever to insure everything moves as it should. If the belt is preventing full engagement of the blades, the belt might be too short. I'm not aware of a tension adjustment for the blades.

does this help for when the belt keeps falling off when I dont have the blades engaged?
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for watching, John! This won't help with that. You could try to bend and adjust the wire belt guards on either side of the front pulley (the one on the engine crankshaft). Also, I initially had the habit of just flipping the PTO lever up to disengage the blades. The belt would come off the front pulley often. I started easing tension off the PTO lever until the belt was disengaged and my belt problem stopped. Seems that the quick release would cause the belt to bounce out of the pulley and out of one or both guards.

Dennis, hi there. It is Rick Hundley my problem is when I engaged the blades I get a high pitch sound. When I disengaged the blades the noise stops. What could cause this should I use a belt dressing? Thanking you in advance.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 2 года назад
Hi Rick, thanks for watching! I would not recommend belt dressing, usually it just makes a big mess and only masks a problem. Here's what I'd check, in order: Belt condition and routing. The belt could be delaminating or could be routed incorrectly. Also make sure the cable or a guard hasn't gotten in the way of the belt and is riding against it when moving. With the mower off, check to be sure all your blades are tight and secure. Loose blades can make noise. With the mower off and the belt tension released, check the spindles for excessive play. The noise could be a spindle bearing. Let me know if this helps or if I can help further. thanks!

@@starfield1874 that’s a shame…it’d be nice to be able to adjust it. Belts stretch over time. If they had just elongated the mounting hole for that bracket, it would provide for minor adjustment.

I have this problem on my Troy-Bilt 46, and a welded bracket without adjustment. I am planning to try several things: 1) hammer the bracket to "fine adjust" it 2) use washers if possible as spacers 3) bend the spring hook, with a torch, to shorten it 4) make my own adjustable bracket. Not necessarily in that order! Will try to get back here eventually to report how it went.
@rstoertz
@rstoertz 2 года назад
Okay, I ended up doing something a little different, and a little more sketchy, but it is working very well. The spring at the end of the cable hooks into a slot on the tension pulley mount. I inserted a screw into that slot, which has the effect of tightening the whole system by about 1/8". Now, it is sketchy because the screw will eventually fall out ... the only thing holding it in is the spring. But it is a quick fix, and proves what the problem is. The belt no longer slips in heavy conditions. You can still hear the governor controlling engine speed, of course, and you do need to slow in heavy grass, but at least the belt isn't so much at risk of burning itself up.

@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 2 года назад
Thanks for watching, Josue! If you have moved it as far as it will go and it still needs to be adjusted, I'd suspect that the cable has stretched or the end lug on the cable has moved. Check your mower to see if there is an adjustment on the other end of the cable, you might be able to take up some slack from there. Also, make sure the bracket on your deck is installed in the right direction. You may be able to turn it 180 degrees and get enough adjustment space.

Thanks for watching, Felecia! The cable attaches the same way on a Bronco as I show in this video, but I don't think the bracket has an elongated hole to use for adjustment. I'm not 100% sure of that, but I don't believe it is the same.
