My 1978 Monte Carlo with a 350 Chevy crate engine has never run better. It settled right down and idles great. I thought the hot cam was the idle problem but turns out that the needle valves were no where near the same dial in. Great video. Easy to follow language. AND IT WORKED!!!!! Thanks so much for your time to put that on line.

Take the guess work out of adjusting the mixture. The proper way is to connect a vacuum gauge directly to the intake manifold for full engine vacuum. You adjust them like the video but watch the gauge till you get the highest vacuum reading in inches. On a good stock engine that's healthy it should pull around 20 inches of vacuum. The idle will be smooth and steady when you hit the sweet spot. Once you get both mixture screws adjusted for max inches on the gauge you're done.

@richb.4374

The difference between modern fuel injection and carbs is night and day. Cold engine performance is where FI shines. Carbs are also susceptible to vapor lock in the summer. The bad thing about FI is if it breaks on the the side of the road call a tow truck. A carb can be fixed with basic hand tools.

Thank you, I just subscribed based on this video. Very easy to understand...made me jump up, grab the long Snap-on screwdriver (straight, not phillips) and start adjusting. Within 1 minute, I took the idle RPMs down from 780 to around 600, which is normal. It's funny, I rebuilt the carb but forgot to tune the mixture!

Hi Chuck.. No there is not a spring on the side of the carburetor. The round black choke housing has a temperature sensitive spring of sorts in side of it the may be at fault. Give Edelbrock a call & they should be able to set you up with that part if needed.

It will work but carbs. that are too big will not give extra power and at some point cause some run ability issues. I have several 350 Chev. engines with two Edelbrock four barrel carbs. which are nearly three times the carburation needed but work just fine except at low RPM's where the engine will hesitate if the throttle is floored. The extra carb. doesn't make a quicker 1/4 mile time but looks good.

I have seen many videos about idle mixture screw settings, but non of the videos talk about the relationship of setting the idle screw in association with the idle mixture screws. My understanding is that once the throttle plates are opened the idle mixture screws no longer work, so to me that says that the more you have the idle screw turned in the less the idle mixture screws will function properly. My question is How do you properly set the idle screw for the primary throttle plates before you set the idle mixture screws? Also there is a huge RPM drop in my engine when I place the auto trans in gear, about 300-400 RPM. Is this normal or is there a way to adjust it so there is not such a huge drop in RPM? I do understand there will be some drop in RPM when going into gear, is there a way to minimize the RPM drop?
@MustangRestorationsInc
@MustangRestorationsInc 9 лет назад
The idle mixture circuit kicks in at about 1250 rpm. So you have plenty of leeway. Start by putting the idle at about 850 rpm. Make your idle mixture circuit adjustments and then lower the idle screw if the idle climbs. Repeat the process until the idle works for you. Your transmissions torque converter is locking up too early. You need to get a "higher stall" converter to help eliminate the harsh transition into gear you are experiencing .

So if i am screwing my mixure screw in (clockwise) am i restricting the air or gas flow?. And does this mixure screw only do its job when idleing, or does it affect how the engine runs on the highway as well? I have a 200ci with a 1 bbl holly. Thanks for the help
@MustangRestorationsInc

The air comes thru the big opening at the top of the carburator, turning the screws clockwise shuts the gas flow at idle. No, it wont do much for highway driving.

@MustangRestorationsInc
@MustangRestorationsInc 10 лет назад
The circuit or passageway is clogged that controls that side of the carburetor. You can try removing the screw with the engine off and blowing some air thru the hole. This may clear the circuit. Good luck!
@MustangRestorationsInc
@MustangRestorationsInc 11 лет назад
The primary two barrel's have the idle circuit for a four barrel carb, you will have two mixture screw's. for a four barrel carb.
@bottmar1
@bottmar1 10 лет назад
I'm surprised that those mixtures screws aren't out 1/2 turn from their high idle speeds. That extra 1/2 turn out provides a slight " cushion " against having idle problems. If they are left in an almost too lean position the slightest bit of contamination in the idle circuit will cause a rough idle. This procedure has been done for many decades and makes it possible to go longer between adjustments. If trade schools aren't teaching this 1/2 turn method they should give the students their money back. Of course the EPA wants the screws slightly in from fast Idle on each screw but that's another "world" there.

No. Accelerator pump in carb. or late timing caused by leaky vacuum advance on distributor or missing hot air hose from exhaust manifold shroud to air cleaner. Occasionally timing has to be slightly advanced from factory suggested setting. Have worked on cars 44 years. Good luck.

@lsswappedcessna
@lsswappedcessna 7 лет назад
It just doesn't kick in. It runs on the primaries only, essentially, it's the same carb as the original 2BBL. at this point. I've checked hoses, they're good. I've checked the throttle cable. It's good. I've checked the carburetor itself. Nothing is visually wrong with it. Say, would the kickdown have anything to do with it not engaging? It doesn't go into passing gear, ever. The fuse for, I'm assuming, anyways, the kickdown switch keeps blowing out, so do you think I just need a new kickdown switch?
@MustangRestorationsInc
@MustangRestorationsInc 7 лет назад
Ok... Dis-connect the battery, Then with the engine off disconnect the linkage on the drivers side of the carburetor & manually work the throttle to its furthest extend. Now reattach the linkage & put your foot to the floor to determine if the throttle is still opening fully..The secondary plates are mechanical. Meaning they are linked to the primary's with a rod. This rod is on the passenger side of the carburetor, its disabled when the choke blade is closed & the choke must be completely open to allow the secondary plates to open. With the engine off. Manually work the throttle while looking at the passengers side of the carburetor to determine if this is happening.. If so,, fix the choke to open..Another reason could be the base gasket is somehow blocking the secondary's from opening. That's what I would look at first.

I have a 350 vortec with a 1406 eldebrock has no electric choke. Car idles fine but when you stab the throttle while driving it loads up or something and goes dead. I can let it sit for a second then start it up and drive normal. It has a Mr gasket fuel pressure regulator on it set on 3 and a glass fuel filter that always seems showing half full of gas. No kinked hoses and just replaced the throttle pump in carb thinking that was problem but still does it. Anyone have a suggestion?

Hi, The timing may be a somewhat retarded or the metering rod springs may need to be changed. Advance your timing a bit & see if that makes a difference. If not then contact Edelbrock for a spring kit & further specific advice.
