Don't be scared of adjusting your truss rod - it's not that hard when the master explains it!
In this ten part series we look at all the steps you need to take to setup your electric guitar with Master Guitar Technician, Charlie Chandler. In this first video we look at doing a basic condition report and assessing what might be done. We use 'the cheapest electric guitar on amazon' and we end up with something pretty cool!

I adjust the truss rod on my new guitars to get them close to my liking. Then I take it to a proper tech to do a proper full set up.

1. Tune to pitch 2. Capo 1 3. Fret 17 4. Using a flat stock feeler gauge check relief (bow) at both 7-9 bottom of string to top of fret. .009 @9 is a factory strat set up. 5. Once relief is set, retune and set intonation. I set my necks straight to .002 @9 and actions fast or low. A low fast action will take sustain away. You can lower the pickups a bit to reduce magnetic pull.

I just found this video and the one on string action. I am / have just built a custon strat with huge jumbo stainless frets and glad to hear I did it correctly. ❤ I subscribed and will watch more videos. I have my neck with just a little bit of relief and the truss rod is easy to adjust. I have nonidea why people are so scared of adjusting it and or working on their guitars? Great stuff. Good videos. ❤

@justinguitar You should combine part 1 and 2 into one video. You really shouldn't watch this one without watching part 1. In part 1, Charlie talks about using a piece of guitar string (.010) to measure the gap. A critical detail necessary to perform this adjustment. Charlie probably doesn't use it here because he knows what .010 looks like after doing this a million times.

My Glarry guitar with a thick neck takes a long time to notice it when I loosen the truss rod, like a day later. When I tighten it changes fast, loosen it changes slow. Waiting 15 minutes and no difference when I loosen it.

guy seems to know the trade well! :) I wouldn't recommend tightening the truss under string tension, only takes a tweak on some guitars to snap it.

I set my neck pretty straight . I use the stewmac string action guage at the 17th fret and use 5/64ths measurement for every string. That way the string action matches the radius of the fingerboard perfectly.I do not capo the 1st fret.

i havent watched the whole series yet, but i always wonder how much frett buzz is acceptable? its like all guitars will eventually buzz if you pick the string really hard enough, and i never know how to tell whats considered "ok".
@justinguitar
@justinguitar 2 года назад
If it annoys you then adjust it. There is a balance between playability, feel and sound - which includes buzz or the lack of it. Some people like very low action and don't mind buzz so long as it is not picked up and heard through an amplifier. on my strat there's no opening at the top of the neck for the truss rod. How am i supposed to adjust it ?
@DavyWayne13
@DavyWayne13 8 дней назад
Probably a heel truss rod, if so, the truss rod adjustment screw will be on the bottom of the neck partially hidden by the pickguard/scratchplate

Climate - I'm living in the mountains in Asia, the temperature ranges between minus 5 to 40 degrees through the year, humidity is like a bath, and no central heating so the aircon puts a guitar out of tune immediately, air pressure fluctuates between 10 to 80 in a day sometimes (no joke it causes back pain on the falling and rising - worse still, the shops save of electricity and locals engineering knowledge is zero, so when you go to buy a new guitar you know its sat in a damp cold shop all winter, a saturated humid shop all spring and a baked dry summer. I often hear a string snap - so i tend to keep air con on all day to tackle the environmental changes and my electric is out of tune on top E B at frets 1&2 (so I've learned diff ways to compensate not to play a D (I'll use acoustic usually or half a d chord, sadly it affects the F I need for my fav song (wind cries Mary) - so I shall take this fellas advice soon....a 'thou' (prior video is a thousandth of an inch, impossible to see a though, must use a gauge of some kind).

Geez are you sure about this? I religiously watch the Stu Mac videos and highly respect Dan. He says this is a huge mistake to do it this way, particularly with an older guitar. The truss rod is subject to huge stress doing it this way. Better to loosen off the truss rod, use a straight edge with blocks then a clamp in the middle. Adjust the clamp until correct then tighten the rod. This way the rod holds the position set by the clamps with no stress and no chance of snapping the rod. I would like your views on this.

He's holding it to his body and pushing the neck upwards to bend it into more of a curve. Probably not recommended but it can help settle the neck into place after you've adjusted the truss rod.

Righty righty lefty loosely. Doesnt that depend on which angle your looking at neck. From body of guitar and up towards headstock. Or from headstock and down towards body of guitar.

Just having one guitar and no money. I really want something just for a switch now and again. So I just invested a whopping $120 (on lay -a-way, so sad) AXL Strat that didn't feel bad at all. It's amazing that you're doing this subject because I decided to buy the cheap PoS and work on it myself. Set it up, maybe switch the pickups and probably sand down the neck a bit. I figure if I screw it up royaly I won't give a shit, but it's good to know basic maintenance etc,. Not that you can't get that done pretty cheap anyway, you just don't know if you're getting what you pay for. After a set up I was given my Les Paul back with the neck pickup way closer to the strings than the bridge. So one was way louder than the other. A simple fix, but I didn't know why that was until I stumbled on a Joe Walsh video on setting up a guitar. The dummy I can be played like that for months thinking it was just the pickups. The neck is a Classic 57 and the bridge a BB3, so I thought the BB sucked ass. After I discovered that I began to distrust paying someone I don't know. If you got someone highly recommended by somebody you know and trust, fine. But if you're like me you need these videos so your not just throwing good cash after bad. Maybe if I save enough moeny I can buy a Justinguitar T-Shirt. Anything's possible.

Cant say Im a fan of this guys techniques... I prefer to measure with extreme accuracy then use a bit of feel to dial it in if need be. My guitars all end up playing the same and the setups are consistent. Use feeler gauges and a precision ruler. I like being able to accurately measure my setups, than use feel though.

a thing I would like to have to know before starting to learn playing guitar: To be able to play, you have to learn to love your instrument to an extend that resembles love to a pet or human. It is some kind of funny, that the relationship between the musician and the instrument is not very present in the music industry. Maybe it only because an instrument becomes a tool which is necessary to make one's skill into money.

been playing 16 years yes i make money from playing since im a teacher, but it was never about the money and even before i was a teacher it was a tool to play music first and the music will always be first id rather spend time playing the music and talking about the music than talking about my instrument

If you understand how the instrument works and can follow the process you can perfect it. It's much the same for cars, maintenance is simple once you know what to do. It's akin to changing your own oil or doing your own brakes.There is no secret to it. That being said I understand those who do not wish to sacrifice their wallet to Stew Mac. A proper setup can be much more in depth than just making adjustments. Sometimes you need to cut a nut slot deeper or replace the nut, do some fret leveling/crowning, shim a neck (especially on 60's Japanese guitars) etc. In the case where you don't want to invest in the tools and the knowledge a professional is a viable option.

There must be tools for people that are OC about this. I don't think that using hands and eyes solves any issues, it's probably adding issues.
