I adopted a 10 year orange tabby. I went to the shelter looking for a kitten. He hopped down, came over sat down in front of me and basically looked at me and I fell in love with Pumpkin. He was the most lovable boy. I only had him for 2 years before his little heart gave out. Miss him so much and would give anything to have him back.

I was 20 when my family adopted our orange tabby, and he was very playful and was even still able to learn new things well into his double-digit years. Also, he got sweeter as he got older and got to where he *always* wanted to be with me and spent a good bit of time on my bed, because I spent a good amount of time on my bed this year, as I've been weak from chemo. He just died in his sleep last month, and I'll be 42 this fall. Likewise, he would have been 22. He was my therapy cat and kept me company during 10 of my 11 chemo treatments this year. The good old cat held on as long as he could, and I'm thankful to him for that and to God for giving me him as a pet many years ago.
I would adopt the oldest sickest cat and give it a life of total luxury and love. Make the animals last years, weeks, or days, it’s happiest ever memories.

I hope you do adopt a senior. I hope a senior cat is in your near future. Right now the shelters are filled with older cats, because most people want a kitten and unfortunately many shelters are kill shelters and the older cats get put down.
Then do it... Meeeh! Always those wannabe attention seekers! I nursed my 16 yrs old cat past 4 years. They are so grounded at age. They already do come in perfection but even more wise. It's the most special time and I loathe ppl abandoning their cats due to age! It should be severe punishment alike children!
Remember, people: It isn't just about what you want. It's also what the cat wants and needs. Please adopt adults/seniors. At their age, especially if they had homes before, they really know what they are missing.
My cat is 18 and I've been having health problems in the last couple of years. When I drop dead I really hope someone will accept my cat for who she is.
TheJbroni I adopted a 10 year old Snowshoe Siamese about a year ago & call her Baby. She is such a sweetheart, through & through. I wish more people would consider a senior cat.
I am all for adopting senior cats. They can be the most loving. My father and I took a couple in 2 years ago. They both passed 5 months apart. It broke my heart. I will eventually be getting a couple more when my living situation is in place. I hear people drop their elder cats off at the shelters. My cats will be with me till the end. These people should be ashamed of themselves. An animal is a loving being who should be with you for the rest of your or their life.

My mum and dad adopted an older cat. He must be 15 by now. He is amazing and brings them so much happiness. All the other cats in the neighbourhood are fascinated by him and are constantly visiting him, he is certainly in charge 🙂
Remember to be gentle with them as they might have joint issues and their bones might be starting to hurt. 😘And don't expect them to jump. Just like old people they might not be able to do that.
I adopted a senior cat recently. She is a delight. Already trained. Already past the wild and destructive kitten stage but plenty of playfulness left in her. She loves too cuddle. I expect to have at least ten more years with her. She had some issues at first but who doesn’t? She is very bright and we have a predictable routine so she is learning confidence and is an amazing companion from the first day.
I adopted my first Senior cat at 4 years old and when I got him he cried like a baby all the time but now he won't even cry even when he was accidentally locked in the basement. And I know he can cry because I can use a webcam to hear him when he knows I'm out front. He stills purrs and trills but no meows when I'm home.
My husband and I adopted an 8 year old Domestic Shorthair this past June and she is my whole heart. ❤❤ One of the best decisions of my entire life. 10/10 recommend.
There are many advantages to adopting a senior cat, the biggest being their personalities have long been molded. I had a kitten that started off as a cuddlebug only to grow into one that never wanted to be held or petted. With a senior cat you can find that one's a cuddlebug almost right away before leaving the shelter.
Senior kitties are great cause they take far less time than kittens or young cats. Chilling a bit more and playing a bit less is a bonus to those of us who like to sleep through the night! I've adopted two 7 year olds; one in 2001 (who lived to 2013) and one in 2015. Taught them both to walk outdoors on leashes and to "sit" on command for treats. You CAN teach an old cat new tricks dogs...not so much ;)
I adopted a 13 year old cat in 2017. The best thing l ever did , he thanks me every day. And he's still loaded with energy. He's also a real lover. ❤💚💙💖💜💖💚
We've adopted several senior cats, and loved every minute with them. The oldest cat we rescued, after his owner's son kick him out when she passed away, was 18YO. Moochie only had about a year with us, but we spoiled him so much. I am certain Karma has something ready for the man who abandoned this 18YO cat.
I adopted a 12 year old from a shelter that thought she'd be a "lifer." Her elderly owner went into a home and died, then her kids had her and surrendered her. There was abuse somewhere along the way. I am proud to say after many surgeries (2k in surgeries as the owner didn't do their duty as carer) to get her in tip top shape and working with her on abuse issues. She is free of ALL phobias and a happy, little, loving and demanding old woman cat, as is her right! She's 16 now and hopefully around for several more years. BEST DECISION I MADE WAS GETTING HER!!

My husband and I only adopt pets from shelters and we always adopt an adult pet. Sometimes, they're elderly and the previous owner surrendered them because they had health issues or the cat/dog had health issues that were financially out of their reach to deal with. Whatever your reason for adopting a pet, if you really want to do some good in this world, adopt an older pet. Let the last few months or years of their lives be happy ones in a home where they're loved and cared for. Everybody wants to adopt puppies or kittens but older animals aren't so lucky and most of the time end up being euthanized for no reason other than nobody wanted them.
Yes. So true. I miss my older darlings terribly. I wish more people would take your good advice. Our oldest is 14 now. Dumped at a shelter by her family after 11 years and with us now for three years. Love her so much.

I moved and could not take my cat . I was broken hearted. An angel took her in. She was 15 years old. She is now 18 and thriving. She is well loved and cared for.
I adopted my senior cat in May of this year. His name is Caramel and turned 15 beginning of June. At the rescue they told me that Caramel had some health issues and would be on medication for whatever life remained. That clinched the deal for me for in my heart I knew that his chances of being adopted were very slim - old cat, health issues - and he'd probably end his life in the shelter or worse be euthanised. He's been with me for 6 months now, has put on weight, his coat which I brush regularly is shiny and he loves to be massaged. Read that massaging your animal creates a bond between you and not only that it's a good way of checking that no suspect lumps appear. He does tend to sleep a lot, which I'm told is perfectly normal but sometimes I can't help thinking he's sleeping because he's bored out of his mind. I've bought toys galore but there's only really one thing that interests him is a wand toy that I flick up and down near his face and that usually gets him going for a bit. I've just ordered a radioguided mouse and an interactive cheese cat toy, fingers crossed that he'll have fun with them, if not they'll end up in their boxes next to the cat circuit with the flashing balls that he showed not one iota of an interest in. I can only recommend adopting older animals, they deserve to spend their old days with people that love and care for them. Just one thing though make sure your budget will allow for vet bills which usually don't come cheap. The Older the animal generally means more frequent trips to the vet. Since I adopted Caramel in May, I've taken him to the vet 5 times, and it starts to mount up not necessarily for the visit which in itself is very reasonable, it's the medication which doesn't come cheap, one has to be prepared for that. I don't want to think about how long my little fellow will be with me, just bask in the joy of having him around.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I think if they're not in the mood to play petting and talking to them and showing that you're at hand to comfort them as needed is good. My boy likes gentle rubs under his chin.
I started off with a 6 month old kitten back in 2012. Now my buddy is 9, wouldn’t trade him for anything, senior cats all seem to settle down and by that age just know how to fit their lives around yours. When I had that damn covid bug back in the spring my buddy stayed loyally with me despite the risk to himself. I can’t thank him enough for that display of affection, senior cats have lots of love and life left. But I’m going to do whatever I have to to get sure my buddy enjoys another 10 years of love and life minimum.
We all don't know how long we have. If your a senior get a senior enjoy your time together and the things you have in common. Love is something you probably both know a lot about.✌️❤️
They are more deserving than any other because they all experienced loss - through a life on the street, abandonment, or death of their owner, and have no idea how or why they are in search of a home. Giving them that second chance at life in a loving home is an amazing experience for both parties. The relative shortness should never matter because for the cat it's a lifetime. Do it not for yourself, but for the cat. You'll realize it's one of the best things you've ever done.🐱🐈💌
I have lived all my life with pets, most of them we got as stray kittens. Few of them we got as stray adult and two of them were adopted from homes. I know how cute kittens are but once I move out my parents home I'll probably stick to older cats. They need it and deserve it
My first two rescue cats were and are Norwegion Forest cats. My first one I called Gandalf sadly passed away in August due to cancer. He was two years old when he came to me through the NFCC, Norwegian Forest cat club. Now I live with Elron, a pure white NFC or wegie, totally deaf but equally totally loveable. He is 9 years old, will be 10 in November.
I only adopt seniors I'm 74 and the thought that my cats will out live me makes me feel terrible.I want them to be with me so I know they'll be treated well. They soooo deserve the best life they can possibly have.
On my 2nd senior adoption... from now on that is my new thing.. I have had seniors from my cats being kittens and growing old.. but.. decided I wanted the ones who are less likely to be adopted..seniors, "imperfect" ones because of being blind, deaf, tripods..etc..
I adopter a senior cat a few years ago. Then, a year or so later, Riff and Raff showed up. They were kittens. The senior cat was like getting a friend that liked to hang out, goof off occasionally, and be there for me. The Riff-Raff? Full time job keeping them out of ev-e-ry-thing! They are on the counters, on the top of the cabinets, killing my house plants, shredding my couch and bed cover, scattering cat food everywhere, knocking over their water and soaking the floor. . . I spend at least an hour a day cleaning up after them of preventing chaos! Yes, they are really cute anf playfull but, I can't wait till they grow up! These are the last kittens! From now on, its all adult rescues for me.
I took in the friendliest cat who was in seriously bad shape, and the vet said he was about 8yo, which I'm not sure is "senior", but he's cuddly to the point of being clingy. :D It's been about 1.5 years, and he's a character! Can't even guess as his history up to the point he just showed up at my house, but I'm glad he did! Senior cats need and give love just like a kitten, maybe more so.
@@jacquelynpowell7964 He must've been an inside cat, because he definitely wasn't "feral", and would come up to anyone/everyone. Whoever had him probably just dumped him when he developed problems (2 growths in his mouth that he was literally starving to death unable to eat because of the pain). almost 900bux later, he's as healthy and happy as anything, and being spoiled rotten. :D Same for my other formerly-outside cat, a bit more clawy but still more or less friendly, who was in bad shape after getting raked silly in a catfight, another bundle dropped on getting him all stitched up, and now he's also an inside-only cat (and right now bugging me for food).
Read to the end... I adopted a 12 year old cat that looked 20 when I got him. He had an absess tooth and ticks, plus a skin disease and was swallowing his food whole...due to his teeth. He was throwing up everyday many times. I got him back to acting and looking and playing like a mature teen in 6 months. He is now on a strict wet diet and I break his treats up to avoid him swallowing them whole and wet his food down to keep his kidneys cleared out. He is the biggest and sweetest gentle and kind boy. Even after his diet he is still 20 pounds. Half main coon and tuxedo. It takes 2 arms to hold him across his body. He came from a home that didn't know how to care for him and he was almost out down, due to unknowing neglect. It's been a year now and he is so happy and attached to me. I call him my life coach and he has helped me through my recovery from an accident that almost took my life. He has been there for me through it all and I couldn't ask for a better mate. He has been kinder to me then any relationship I have ever had. Most women just wanted my wealth or to use my kindness or to be an arm charm for her girlfriends. Perhaps one day I will find these qualities in a women as well. Fang is the best friend I never had. ♥️
Adopted a 13 yr. Knew there might be health issues as he aged. However, got him checked by my vet after bringing him home, to find out he has diabetis. Love him but as a senior myself, would not have taken on the large expense.He is my 13th cat, several of which came off the street.
I had my cat going on two months and i tell u first time having a pet and simba the cat has stolen my heart and damn it wish i could have a huge mansion and shelter all this animals and love them......and give them a good life im thinking later on get another cat a baby girl and i already got her name tatiana....
You know what? Ive been trying to adopt a senior puss, but there are non available. Which is good, it's wonderful in fact! I want to adopt a puss that is middle aged. I'm 2 yrs off 70,and I don't want to adopt a puss that will be homeless when I die. I'm in Australia btw. My family do not have longevity, they do not get into their eighties, so, I refuse to take on a young puss, only to have it returned when I kick the bucket! That would be selfish and cruel.
