Welcome back to the October 2023 episode of ADV NEWS. We are getting very close to the big end of year motorcycle shows and that means heaps to talk about. Ducati have been busy in the off road world. BMW is dropping weight and Suzuki's VStrom 800 returns to its roots.

Hay Solid, how's life down under? As far as the new GS, it's still a fat pig. A Yamaha world rave would be the ticket. I almost got my 93 XR650L back together. With the 6 gallon achairbees tank, it's like 350/360 lbs. And over 50 hp tuned up , still a hoot in the woods. Stay safe. Cheers 2 you and the family. 🖖👌💪

Remember the KTM 490 that was dropped, CF Moto use that engine in a number of bikes as their 450, they are about to launch the MT 450x which will their version of the Adventure, looks like a smaller MT 800 with a 21 inch front wheel so will be interesting to see next week in Italy.

The thing with the 1300 is most of the weight was lost by losing the center stand on the base model, adding a lithium battery, and thinning out the passenger seat and omitting or giving it a small rear rack. Do that to a 1250 and they are very close in weight.

I am not expert nor an owner of previous version. But making engine bigger, adding radar systems, electronic servos for moving windshield.. for a fair comment I think you should consider those too. thank you.

@@kao12561 I agree to a sense. But the motor is made bigger by 4mm bore so not really a much bigger motor in size. The main point was taking things off an adventure bike that it has come with for years to bring the weight back down is a bit deceptive. Not to mention you have to fork out more money to get them all back minus the battery. Also, some of the weight reduction listed is from and "option" for lighter wheels. Im not dissing on BMW, I just dislike when any manufacture uses a bit deceptive marketing strategies.

True. But keep in mind they built a completely new, much more powerful motor and added all that ACC radar tech that also added a few kilos.

Seems like the Euro brands are killing it these days. They are giving us the bikes that we've been saying we want, unlike the brands from the land of the rising sun. It's a shame because I've always loved my Japanese machines. Great video as always!

This is how I ended up buying a Ducati DesertX back in May. Was disappointed the T7 World Raid and Extreme weren't available in the US, so I settled on the base T7. None were available at the largest Yamaha dealer in Texas. Went to the largest Honda dealer in Texas and tried to buy an Africa Twin AS manual trans. None were available. Tried to put a deposit down and was told the Honda is not allowing any US orders. I have over 6k miles on my DesertX in five months now. Will probably purchase the new Ducati MX bike too.

@@jamescampbell4334congrats. I had similar experience and ended up with a Norden 901 Expedition with zero regrets. Really like the Desert X too. Enjoy!

@@lukefish7562 Norden 901 is an awesome bike. I almost purchased that instead of the DDX. In the end that Dakar Desert racing look of the Ducati won out. Ride safe.

Seems like the guy in charge of Pierre Mobility hates 500ish cc twins. Killed the KTM project I had high hopes for, and now the 5.5. Not sure why, but disappointing nonetheless. The new Himalayan could be the modern equivalent of the venerable DR. Cheap, reliable platform to take one person and their gear almost anywhere. It will be interesting to see how the aftermarket treats it. As a former owner of a Wee Strom the whole lineup of 800s looks attractive, but the weight is getting up there. What I want is a Kove/CRF450 motor in an ADV frame, approachable seat height and under 170kgs for 10,000 USD. Not holding my breath though... I always look forward to starting my weekend with a Solid video. Thanks!

I think the main issues were: The India factory for KTM 490 was years away from being built and ready when they axed the model design. It was mentioned briefly that they would move production to China, but that plan apparently fell through. PM CEO said he did not like the idea of MV Agusta having the Chinese made 5.5 in their line-up; that the brand should remain Luxury + Italian. And a pure guess from me is that these 500ish bikes would get a price tag more expensive than bigger bikes like the Yamaha T7 so KTM may have decided few riders would pay so much for a smaller cc bike, even if it is truly awesome.

@@Justen1980 I totally get the wisdom of not wanting to manufacture more than they already are in China, but they could have just waited for the Indian factory, and we could have one now... As for price, India is waaaay cheaper than Japan.

@@davidc1961utube My logic on the 490 price is the T7's price is between the Ktm 390 and 890's price, so I imagine part of the plan was for the 490 to cost similar to the T7.

Nice to see a 650cc single being built. 550-650cc is the sweet spot for dual sport IMO with good numbers at the wheel and decent service intervals. Hopefully we see more than a supermoto. A light adventure variant with the fuel carried down low would certainly generate some buzz.

Incase some missed it ?, Bikewale, an India based channel, got their hands on a full spec sheet for the new Himalayan 452 about a week ago. The wet weight will be 196kg.

@@iangriffiths9930 yes, I think we all hoped for lighter, but it's Royal Enfield so it was never going to be a high spec bike built from titanium and Carbon fibre. What we still don't have is a price?. From what I understand is it will not replace, but sit alongside the original 411 so it'll have to be a higher price & the 411 is £5,200 here in the UK?. If it's priced at or above the KTM 390 adventure I think it'll be a hard sell?.

I believe that the new suzuki vstrom is giving the majority of adventure motorcyclists what they want. I've read a lot of comments on the new Honda Transalp where people are saying that they like it because at most they will only be riding the occasional dirt road. In that case why not this new vstrom 800 with cast wheels and tubeless tires. Much easier for roadside repairs. Also more approachable seat height.

A good friend of ours owns a Piaggio dealership, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Vespa. He’s moving things around to make way for Ducati’s in January. Can’t wait.

A chain driven Desmo! You'd think they'd keep the belt for EnduroX models. Curious to see those engines. Rotax first off-road four stroke had a belt driven cam which was okay for those maintenance intervals.

the new himi weight is 196kg according to Indian youtubers which is 3kg less than the old one. Personally, I'm more exited about the new Hero xpulse 400. Too bad We have to wait one more year for its launch.

I think, Charlie and Ewan should start the same route to New York again but with this beauty but with less showing support vehicles footages. GS 1300 looks really good. But I will still wait until they release ADV version and also fix some issues which will arise I assume.

Do cast wheels make your bike perform better on road? I can see spoked wheels could flex slightly but on an adventure bike? Thanks solid 👍

Cast wheels are much cheaper to manufacture, but not as durable. I'd say they are also lighter than spoked wheels, but I might be wrong here. One would have to actually weigh two sets of wheels.

All we want is a sub 165kg bike with at least 45hp that has long service intervals, the DR650 did it twenty years ago minus the modern refinement, doesnt seen that bloody hard

The r1300gs is still heavier than the first r1200gs with same fuel load. Porsche etc do a bar bones version of their 911. Bmw need to make a non range rover verion of the gs at sub 200 dry.

Suspension travel on the V-Strom 800RE is 150mm F & R is it not? I think you are getting mixed up with ground clearance.

The weight savings are great, but as someone who’s owned GS Adventures since 2007, BMW has lost me on this one on the looks alone. If I wanted a V Strom, I’d buy V Strom. I was considering a new one this year but I’ll be keeping my 2012.

i think im still pretty excited about the triumph 400s. Also will Kawasaki put the new 450 in the ninja or versys? pretty sure they will for the ninja. always dying for a little more more out of the versys 300. the eliminator 450 motor would be perfect!

I'm looking at getting into a 2 wheeler. Don't really know any biker I can trust (all hardcore HD fans). I'm liking the Honda Scrambler...3xcept that muffler. I'd want to be able to carry a pannier on both sides. Is it able to fit something more like the Rebel exhaust, or something that places the muffler lower. Is there any better choices for an adventure type bike? 6' 3" 210 lbs plus gear. Low back has some problems so that big wide and long seat seems the best choice, but again, I don't know what I don't know. USA by the way. Thanks for anyone's help. I tend to be a bit of a Honda fan due to their durability and longevity. So no Harley suggestions please. I think (guessing) the 500cc range would be the best to learn and still be useful down the road. Thanks.

Have a look at a new KLR650, cheapish, reliable, road focused dual sport but still very off road capable, aftermarket parts for days and can carry a big load.

@@markdotcomau I'm thinking a 650 would be overkill for me, but again, I don't know what I don't know. How do they compare price wise, hp, and such? I've always tried to do the most with the smallest machine that is capable of the job. After 50 years of farming my newest tractor is still a 1953. Original clutch, engine, trans. Never had a V8 engine because a straight 6 can do the job.

@goatman3828 think of the KLR as the tractor of the bike world, theyre not fast or overpowered by any means. They just chug along like a dr650 or drz 400 which could also be great options

Lucky Strike hasn't been an advertised cigarette brand in what, 30 years? I like the Lucky Explorer color scheme and would prefer they keep its name, too. A 650 Ducati ADV single? Sounds very enticing.

Would Ducati ever make a smaller 650cc Desertx with this new single cyclinder engine? I would think it would outsell a super motard. MV Agusta 9.5 ADV will be called the "Enduro Veloce" unless they have changed their mind again

If the Royal weighs more than a fully fueled DR650 or DRZ or CRF300, it's a big FAT no from me. I mean why would anyone choose to buy it, who's the intended target market when the obvious competitors are better?🤔

IF Ducati had any brains they would make a sub 150kg enduro/ADV single first as that is the bike that the world's dirt riders have been screaming for. Their MX bike will be a bit player, like the new Triumph in a world of Japanese and Austrian MX bikes. PLus it needs to be at least a 500 or 600 and that doesn't fit in with MX. Keep on dreaming.
