Welcome back to ADV NEWS for march 2024. In this episode we discuss the upcoming BMW R12GS. Is it the second coming of the BMW HP2 Enduro or is it just another version of the R9T? KTM have just bought a controlling stake in MV Agusta. Lastly we discuss the Husqvarana Svartpilen 801.

Looking at the prices for those quite well aged HP enduros, which sell now more expensive than new shows that there is for sure a market for s boxer powered bigenduro.

I totally with your perspective on Chinese destroying fantastic Italian brands , I had one ☝️ of the last Italian made Benelli 1130 Trek , “ it was a work of Art “ not the crap that Benelli are producing now “ . It’s another reason I’m glad Norton is staying in the UK 🇬🇧 and producing beautiful bikes . Unfortunately this has happened in the car world as well with MG and other brands .

I'm of an age that remembers newly-arriving cars and bikes being dismissed as 'jap crap' yet now, if you want to look at ultra-reliability for either two or four wheel vehicles, you look no further than Honda. Korean cars got the same treatment yet now make some very popular models. Some of the more recent models coming out of China suggest that they're following the same trajectory

I was a rural commuter on an OilHead. The 801 ,with its FT tires, would fit the purpose. BMW sees customers who still like to travel on their air/oil headed bikes. They've kept that HexHead up-to-date, so keeping just-in the fence. Pierer gets a badge and 3 cylinder engine. It's funny I remember BMW assembling the F650 'parts sourced' bike in Italy at first. Production must have gone up, so the BMW bikes went to Berlin and Aprilia stayed home.

Not that I'd buy it but I am interested in the production of this new R12GS, if it's anything like the hp2 then it will probably sell well. I'll stick to my xcountry, the poor man's hp2 enduro 😂

Correct Bill, I don't think they will release a new HP2 but the closer they get with the new R12GS the better.

Your two model theory is interesting, as they would be direct competitors of the triumph scrambler 1200 that is quite alone in its segment right now. The neo-classic rally styling isn't as "vintage" as the scrambler, but it's a clear call back to the HP2!

No, HP2 were never sold in quantities ! Built in Germany is way to expensive, even if the name will be : M 12 GS - ( with carbon parts ) ( may be in some years it will come from Bajaj / India ) - with good price !!

Bmw knows thir old 700/750, 800/850 and the new 800 and 900 gs's dont and wont steal customers away from other brands in terms of mid weight adv bikes. So i think they will bring out the R12GS as competitor to those, since if the shave nice weight off, this thing will directly compete with the likes of T7, 890adv, Tuareg, TransAlp,... All while having the benefits of air colled, shaft driven, touring capable, low weight boxer engine.

The 801 is just a re-skinned 790 and costs more. The Husky fans aren't as keen as they were on the old 701, but one could argue that the 701 didn't sell until it was on clearance prices. I am quite curious how the Pierer Group will handle their partnerships and brands. KTM, Husky, Gas Gas, MV Augusta while dancing with Bajaj and to some extent CF Moto. A lot of "Hmmm" when reading all this and trying to predict the future. I would love to see the breakdown of motorbike growth worldwide.

As a bit of a KTM simp, I would love to see a Husqvarna scrambler to rival the Ducati Desert sled. I know that bike is out of production, but us KTM boys need an excuse to put a legit scrambler in the stable. The Svartipilen is cool, but not quite the right bike for a scrambler.

Hey Solid, the german media already commented on the spy shots of the new boxer. They identified the frame as that of the new R 12 nineT. So don't keep the hopes up too high for a new HP2. Still, with the additional ground clearance, it might be a nice retro enduro that comes close to the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE. Cheers, LdV

When I saw the weight reduction on the 900GS and 1300GS, I was afraid BMW was making room in their ADV lineup for their new R18GS off road capable locomotive.

BMW is making lighter ADV bikes because of my comments under every marketing video they post. 😛 I was pleased to see the 900 and 1300 coming in lighter than the 850 and 1250, but that's a bit like complementing a 100 kg girl for losing 5 kg. I'm eager to see the R12GS when it hits the market. I loved the HP2 Enduro even though it wasn't a market success. I loved the concept. For the riding I do, I'd love it more if it had a modern 600 cc air/oil cooled boxer engine to be even lighter, but with a very large fuel capacity and a big rear rack. Simpler and lower cost would be a big plus too. I don't want a bike that's a phone accessory. That's also going to be outdated in a few short years.

I think you are right about BMW. But the rumor if have been seeing, which I hope to seek come true, is the concept BMW T500GS. Saw some youtube vids on it. Just a rumor. Which I kind of have been shocked that they have not brought a smaller replacement for the old G650GS. This T500GS im seeing rumor of looks fantastic. Would be a real player in that 450-500cc range. Keep an eye on that one.

It is just a suggestion/speculation from the Italian motorcycle designer Oberdan Bezzi. I have to admit it would make more sense than to keep the g310 line up: I don't think it ha been a success.

TVs is expected to make a 500cc twin engine. Which will definitely have a BMW version.so, there is some credibility to this rumour.

Hubert Trunkenpolz is the new CEO of MV, previously head of sales for the KTM group and he has said MV will remain an exclusive marque which realistically would be the only way to use the brand. (Trunkenpolz's uncle is the T in KTM as one of the original founders).

Glad to see BMW coming around. I worked with them in the old PD days. It can be done. MV needs to be MV. KTM turns out a lot of china crap as it is. Same with Husky.

Solid, you are partially wrong about MotoMorini. Look at the new V twins models presented at eicma 2023. That's not chinese crap more than the BMW f900 series is: engineered in europe and manufactured in China. Benelli, on the contrary, will soon get ditched by QJ, which even in Italy has recently started selling adv bikes with better engines (claimed 92 ponies) and better equipment (suspension, brakes). Check the QJ Srt 800 sx.

Husqvarna has simply made a Vitpilen 801 because it would be cheaper to produce, and are just trying to make people think it's a true successor to the Svartpilen because that's the model everyone liked more

PMG just buys the names. Husky, GasGas, and now MV. They tend to divest of most of the mechanicals, and use the names on their own stuff. Pray i'm mistaken with MV. I'll never be able to afford one, that's sort of the point of MV, to be unobtainable, or close to it. An aspirational bike. A poster bike. If it shares the mechanicals of any other brand, or gets manufactured anywhere else... meh.

BMW is out of control. Nothing but monster 100, 120, 140, HP bikes that are 100 pounds too heave to go 140 MPH on dirt roads. These thing are road bikes only. Okay so a pro rider demos them as he ride over 4 foot ledges, great but what do real non-pro riders do with these pigs. We go from 2 dollars keys to keyless junk which costs hundreds. Who are these designers, the sure as hell aren't riders.

Yep, BMW sales are “out of control”. The big “pig” GS is only the most successful and highest selling ADV bike of all time. Where, why and how people ride them is irrelevant because the formula works, and works well.

Exactly my point! The average rider can do as many offroad traings as he/she can afford, but will never get to that level of riding on a heavy bike as demonstrated in those promo videos. Gravity will always work against us!

aarrr Benelli has improved in quality since they got brought out by China, and most of the construction was done there. AUGUSTA is just cashing in that the Benelli TRK 502X was the best selling bike in Europe.
