HISTORY OF PENCAK SILAT Pencak Silat is derived from words "Pencak" and "Silat. The word "pencak" and its dialectic derivatives such as "penca" (West Java) and "mancak" (Madura and Bali) is commonly used in Java, Madura and Bali (Indonesia), whereas the term "silat" or "silek" is used in Sumatra (Indonesia). In modern usage, pencak and silat are seen as being two aspects of the same practice. Pencak is the performance aspects of the martial art, while silat is the essence of the fighting and self-defense. It is often said by practitioners that there can be no silat without pencak, on the other hand pencak without silat skills is purposeless.[2] Although the word silat is widely known through much of South East Asia, the term pencak silat is specifically used in Indonesia. The martial art "Pencak Silat" spread to several countries in south east Asia like Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and other. Even now it has spread to many countries in the world, like Australia, USA, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Arab countries and others. The names of Association Pencak Silat as national organization in the several countries of south east Asia, namely: Ikatan Pencak Silat Indonesia (IPSI), Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan Malaysia (PESAKA), Persekutuan Silat Singapura (PERSISI), Persekutuan Silat Kebangsaan Brunei Darussalam (PERSIB), Pencak Silat Association of Thailand (PSAT) And Philippine Pencak Silat Association (PHILSILAT). Pencak silat plays an important role in Indonesia's history. Since the age of ancient Indonesian Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms like Srivijaya, Majapahit, and Kingdom of Sunda, these kingdoms used pencak silat to train their soldiers and warriors. Archaeological evidence reveals that by the sixth century A.D. formalized combative systems were being practiced in the area of Sumatra and the Malay peninsula. Two kingdoms, the Srivijaya in Sumatra from the 7th to the 14th century and the Majapahit in Java from the 13th to 16th centuries made good use of these fighting skills and were able to extend their rule across much of what is now Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. In the tradition of Minangkabau of Sumatra, Silek (Minangkabau martial art ) can be traced to the fore father of ancient Minangkabau people, Datuk Suri Dirajo. It is said that according to old Javanese poetry, Kidung Sunda, the sentinels of the Prabu Maharaja Sunda exhibited great skill in the art of pencak silat when they escorted Princess Dyah Pitaloka to Majapahit as a potential bride for King Hayam Wuruk, and faced indignities that greatly affronted their honour. In a battle that ensued at the Bubat field (1346), the Sundanese forces fought to the last drop of blood, using special pencak silat moves and various weapons. Albeit the pencak silat styles employed in combat were different, we can still draw the conclusion that in Javanese kingdoms throughout the archipelago, pencak silat served the same function: to defend, maintain or expand territory. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencak_Silat#Etymology www.silatma.com/silathistory
wow... this is silat tari kolot cimande style (Cimande Old Dance)... we call the exercise as "Gatrekan", at 06:00 not only about basic block but also basic stroke. at 07:00, not only hand drill but also body movement up and down, right and left.
This silat is no doubt called "silek tuo" (old form) from minangkabau (Indonesia) . If u are trying to find styles of Indonesian silat, u may check silat Betawi (Batavian), silat Sunda (Sundanese Silat) or Silek Minang (Minangkabau Silat). Those are mainly consider as the root of Silat tradition. Another style could also easily found in Malaysia and Brunei. I officially do research in silat.. Cheers.
do you know where can i find exactly this style of silat here in malaysia? do u know of any? i know its from minang, can tell from the outfit (black gold, excluding the kain from the hips), i like the form, its soft smooth and sharp at the same time.
I was blessed to be trained by these two guys for almost two years. We also learned Cimande (Macan and Monyet). The best silat school , I have ever encountered. In top of that, our master Steven Benitez is a wonderful human being. God Bless him.
lol. yesterday, i watch this on my switch lite and it almost fell off my hands because i got sleepy. I promptly keep my switch and went to sleep. That music though .. :p
very beautiful and practical style of fighting!I regret that in my little town no one teaches that . thanks for this movie. am delighted! greet from Poland !!
this is the problem with showing the classical art form, people think its handwaving, though those in the know realise there are good tecniks inside, better to show raid movie, great but a bit hollywood, people today compare everything to mma, though this is beautifully done its too arty and ballet like ,better for them to watch des bordes harimau as its more easy to assimulate
Fascinating glimpse into Indonesian culture, For martial artists. It has been said :when there is a difference of opinion regarding a particular application (principle!) that the associates would have them perform the jurus or lankah and then decide.

The Pencak Silat, is from word, silaturahim.. an Arabic words.. mean, brotherhood.. both close brother/family, or far away .. for good neighborhood, also.. The poin is, about attitude between humans itself.. not to kill, not to hurting each other peoples.. but for devence.. Pencak silat come from kingdoms at past Indonesian. Usefully for devence.. So many kingdoms fight each other at past.. And when colonial ( British, Portueguese, Spanish, Netherland, or Nippon) come to Indonesian, to take the spices, farm, etc ; they fight them with many kinds of pencak silat.. For brotherhood, relationship, or just performance.. it bring beauty, harmony, keeping, sport, ceremony, etc.. not hard, but can hurting if enemy attacking.. Bravo..
@@vtino4825 thats absolut ly, maybe right. But at that time, itu gimana be used to fight hard, or till killing somebody or people. Islam come to rehabilitatif what are destroy by past Kingdom. What are murder again, again, and again. Every kingdom has it own legacy to killing their enemy, again and again, continuous ly till death. Islam come to rehabilitatif what are destruktif. But also still respect high ly, high ly by past culture. Example : saroong, peci, the roof (like pura Hindu), speak languages, other culture, etc. But when gonna rehabilitasi, there are came Colonial Europe, wanna take over all way of source, not just spices, but also gold, glory, kingdom, etc. But Nusantara at Islam way, don't wanna be like Indian or Aborigin, that are killing murdered 75 million more by Colonial Europe. Because Islam teaching about, fight again tirani, cruelty, murdered, killer, etc. # thinking deep ly, bro
@@belalativi4818 you are fooled by your religious leaders, who make false claims and false history. the history of Islam in Nusantara is far more horrible than you know
@@vtino4825however, but my leader is Hindu Nusantara.?? Why we so stupid, again and again and again and again later.?? To fight ourselves.?? Killing others, murdering others brother sister.??? Why it happen at Silat Meaning that I talking about, then reallity.???
@@Pradeep19. Find what type of Pencak Silat you like, as there are different types in the market. Then find a reputable school, best schools are from authentic teachings, either Indonesia, Malaysia or Brunei. Online distance learning is good and made available, but for beginners, I advise you go on-site learning instead, until you understanding the fundamentals before taking online distance learnings in the future. Hope this helps.
@@ItsJusFaz 🙏 thank u but pliz recommend me a silat style which will be ancient at the same time effective and teachers available both off line and online so that after a few months off line training I can countinue online as m from india and not be able to reside outside my country for long time 🙏
I think this Silat style from west Java, ( race Sundanese ) cause I can see back ground tiger picture and sunda wiwitan Temple, Pasundan Silat - west Jawa Indonesia.
+Julanos Buchari Asal jawa barat itu benar dan asal minang juga benar, karena pada dasarnya satria arts ini mengajarkan silat yg banyak berasal dari minang dan sunda, coba buka saja website satria arts dan open circle...
+MkMcrae1 No, but I do know now that this guy on this video (Steve Benitez) runs online courses for long distance learners!! I've just started on it, and it is really great to be honest. I didn't think I could learn from a video lessons but this guy really knows his stuff and has got a remarkable way of expressing it verbally. You should check out their website. www.satria-arts. com
Nope. It's just demo, and possibility of attacking target, of course not all hit to target but just to train the flow of movement. In pencak silat like other martial art we must have morality even to our enemy. My guru says, if you in life/death situation and forced to kill, just straight with one move if u can (eg, cut the throat with karambit), not torturing every single body part of your enemy. Originally, long time ago most of silat teachers forbid silat for competition and street fight, except in life and death situation. Salam from West sumatra.
I acquired this video a long time ago. I was able learn a great deal from it. Is there anyway I can continue studying it? Is there an online option or an instructor I'm unaware of here in Wilmington NC.
@@taisonlaw There are many types of silat, which I have identified is Silat Setia Hati Terate from East Java (which has been popularized on RU-vid by thewtiger92), Silat Gayong from Malaya, Silat Harimau (tiger silat) from Sumatra (which is said to be able to subdue muay thai) & Silat Sendeng from West Java (which has been popularized in films by Iko Uwais).
Well at least its not Korean Karate. As a kid I took Korean Tang Soo do from the grandmaster himself. Jae Joon Kim. and it was trash. He even admitted that he taught a watered down martial art. You might not think its the deadliest but its dealier than that Korean stuff
