Hey Everyone. I finally got the "advanced" oil well setup finished.
Goal of this was to use the build up natural gas inside the oil well
without: steam escaping through the gas pipes, gas pipes breaking,
water ending up in the crude oil pump, the room overpressureizing and breaking tiles,
or the buildings in the room overheating.
This is Version Number 18 by the way.
I had an ever evolving oil well setup which got too complicated and still didn't fix all issues i found with them.
So I had to comletely rework the design and make it simpler but still as robust as i wanted it to be (some old design in the discord).
I put all of previous oil well versions and this one in a stress test situation.
How I tested the advanced versions:
0. Dupes with no atmosuit skills and a machinery skill of 0 to 5 (then i exchanged them).
1. 10x Speed.
2. A little bit cooling allowed.
3. Only gold amalgam (for the pumps), copper, gold, ceramic for the insulation or simpler materials.
4.a For some time using Water up to 98,5-99 °C and let it run non-stop for some hours.
4.b For some time using Water excactly 90 °C and let it run non-stop for some hours.
(Water that is excactly 90°C is the most annoying; it's not cool enough to efficiently reduce the room temperature
and not hot enough to produce steam reliantly).
4.c For some time using Water of 27°C and and let it run non-stop for some hours.
(If the Water is under 90°C the crude oil will still always be output at 90°C).
5. For some time I let them run dry and started them again.
6. Setting of at least 75% back-pressure
7. Added more natural gas (in the temperature range the oil well does)
8. Added more steam (in the temperature range the oil well does)
9. Condensated the steam to see what happens
10. A mixture of all above
Conclusion:
This system should run with any water in the temperature range of 1-99°C.
If steam is produced the gas pump will be locked and the doors will be cooled.
The steam can then condensate back to water drop down and be sucked up by the pump to be recycled.
If water builds up in the system it is (most of the time) located in the left mesh tile
or it builds a thin layer on top of the (heavier) crude oil.
The next time a dupe comes and ventilates the back pressure from the oil well
the water will flash to steam because of the hot natural gas from the oil well
(this can take several verntilation-cycles depending on the water input temperature
and the temperature of the buildings in the room-setup)
Sensor Settings:
Gas Element Sensors: Steam
Hydro Sensor: 860kg
Atmo Sensor: 2kg
Filter Gate: 5s
Buffer Gates: both sensors leading to the doors 200 seconds
Buffer Gates: the other ones 5 seconds
Materials:
All Pumps: Gold Amalgam
Isolation: Ceramic
The rest should be free to choice but i am not excactly sure

I love this video, still Id think that you should have 2 videos of this, 1 is < 1minute to showcase editing + music. 2 is to in-depth your build and explaination. I think that you are shy to speak up, but don't worry about that! Oni community are not toxic, we support you with all our love.

Hi Ratsu. Thank you for your kind words. You are not wrong i am not used to recording myself in a video, but that wouldn't stop me. The main reason I did not make an explainer video yet is because I don't want the channel to be too confusing or all over the place. I do not know what my core audience is yet since I can only go from the comments and analytics (which includes a lot of non native english speaking countrys). The last month my clickrate was 1/3 of the previous one. That, and of cause the lack of time to edit and design the video kept me from trying that. But I think your suggestion is a good Idea and I will give it a shot and see what happens.

@@kinginthehome why not just try to understand it by building it yourself or watching how the oil well works near the end of the shorts? + literally every shorts videos are meant to be played a lot of times, it’s not like luma gets money from his shorts views anyway. or maybe watch another in depth video if you don’t understand, why even bother accusing a good oni youtuber when you can just solve your problem by spending 10 seconds of your life to search it for other videos

Wow quick first comment! It is appreciated. The room got a little bit high. When i tested it without spaces the delay in the gas element sensors not picking up the steam sometimes lead to the steam being sucked up because the doors weren't closed. The higher room solved that issue. Maybe you can shorten it on or two tiles. I tested the very compact version (until it contaminated my gas storage and i dismissed it) and this version over 300 cycles or so. But since I already tested for 4 day a that time I did not want to compact this functioning version anymore. Feel free to tell me if you find some issues.

I make the entrance with a one tile deep liquid lock. Leave it empty, the well will fill it with oil and setup the lock itself. If you run your insulated water pipes at the floor level the oil will prevent it from boiling in the pipes even if you pump in 90C+ temperature water. The oil never comes out over the temp of the water. Setup one air pump in there for the gas. Pull a vacuum with a vent into the oil biome using an air filter. Once it’s vacuumed out you can delete the air filter and run the line into your natural gas storage. I’ve never have any issues even 1000+ cycles in. Well I did once… when I brute forced petroleum boiling in the oil biome using digging. It’s a lot of micromanagement but you can manage to boil petroleum with no sour gas if you dig carefully. That will put your oil surface temps up to 275+ in a hundred cycles or so and there will be steam! If you have transitions tubes in the oil biome… well they are all naphtha now.

I just learn that the steam created when exchange heat with the nat gas in oil well, that blow my mind when i knew it. I've being wrong all the time when i think the water in the pipe exchange heat with atmosphere, this game brings me joy when this moment happens XD. Btw, i usually run co2 gas pipe through oil well and feed it to slicksters. The oil well cool down and the slickters stay in comfort temperature, i call it win win situation

Well you don't explain the purpose of it but my guess would be you get steam at times. You can do a much simpler build: 1) place the oil pump above the well instead of below it. Wells work when submerged not problem. The pool of oil stabilizes the temperature of the well and no steam is created. 2) for extra safety, cool the water down a bit instead of using 95C+ water. For example some condensing CVS tamer designs output water that is around 99C. That's too hot for safe operation even with a submerged well. If you run that thru an AT you get 85C water. You can save some power if you run only half of the water and the mix it back (the build needs to use a tank, you don't want to feed half packets to ATs). You get water around 90C for half the energy price. Also, the faster you remove the nat gas, the less time it has to heat up the oil, so maybe using 2 pumps can help. Anyway, nice video!

Hey TheMule71. Thanks for the tips. I know what you mean and I tested most of it. But my challenge was different. The description has more Information on that. Submerging works for a long time but not indefinetely. I made tests over 800 cycles. But maybe i did not submerge it enough? I couldn't think of all the possibilities. :D I just tested all the common designs I knew or found on RU-vid. But I sure guess that there are simpler designs. Thank you for the Input :)
@TheMule71

@@Luma_plays You're right most designs aren't 100% stable, that's why you should cool them down somehow if you want to prevent water from boiling inside the well. They do work tho if you make sure that the gas doesn't pile up inside the build (which can happen if you're not careful) and if the water is too hot to begin with. In the past I tried direct cooling solution, which works but it add complexity expecially if the wells are spaced out. At the end on the day, cooling the water is easier. All builds rely on the difference in SHC between water and oil+gas but yours also on some heat loss due to phase transition. That's probably why it is more stable.

There a far easier way to prevent steam using a much simpler method. Allow the oil well to be submerged in a 2 tile layer of oil, allow the 2nd layer to maintain ~500kg mass a tile with automation, and a pump in the dropoff in a small enclosure next to it. The mass of the crude oil will absorb the greatest amount of the heat from the natgas greatly reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the water in the well. Combined with pumping natgas out and keeping air pressure low, I've prevented steam or pipe breakages this way with a smaller box.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 3 года назад
Hi ahmataevo. Yeah the two tile submerged oil well should function a long time that way (couple 1000 cycles or if your water temp is more optimal longer). Check the Description how I tested. Cause I used very hot water and let those things run for hundreds of cycles. In a normal use most designs are fine. But I tried to accommodate for really suboptimal settings like switching water on and off, around 99°C Water, dupes being the less trained ones and more. I tested what I came up with and some common designs. Like the one from Francis John. And they ALL broke sooner or later. That's why I wanted to make it really safe. This is one design that survived. Not sure if I would build it the same way now.

The top chamber part seems excessive. At first I was thinking maybe they are running 1k packets of superheated water to get petroleum out of it, and the pump part was for potential steam recapturing, but nope... But wouldn't that work better if you took it that route? Instant Petroleum, already using atmo suits at that point, one less thing to tackle? I'm not sure what, but I feel something small is missing here. Still think it's a great short!

Thanks for thinking so nice about my horrible old design :D It was a challenge I put on myself to build a non overheating setup with the worst possible materials. I think I put my idea from that time in the description. In a regular situation I would go for steel and plastic first then build a permanent setup for the petroleum production.

*Hey this is a great design for videos like this, but you need to provide a few more seconds per phase, for pausing time, its a bit too fast.*
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Hey thank you for the feedback. :) I will do that once in a while for bigger builds. For "real" shorts i am sadly limited to 59 seconds otherwise my videos will not be shown in the short shelf. But a tiny tip. When building one of those you can set the speed to 0.5 or so, that way it is easier to pause. Also i often put more useful information in the description of all my shorts about material, tips, pitfalls and stuff.

Why does the oil well structure stop outputting oil every so often? It’s not backpressured and it has water supplied. Has power too. It just permanently spews out natural gas and no oil production nor any water consumption.

@the_staplergun3968

@@Luma_plays the input water isn’t hot. Around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I delete and rebuild the buildings and they work fine after that. On that note, the third oil well I have is off the same water line and it was working fine. It’s absolutely random.

What? Oil wells make steam? I didn't know that
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 3 года назад
Hi SquidCake. The Oil well stores up to 10 kg water. If there is not a full 10kg water package left that remaining water may heat up to above 100°C and turn into steam (some times because the crude oil is too hot sometimes because of the hot natural gas. But it can happen.
