Yes this is bigger than it has to be but I tested it like it is shown.
Not sure why i made it this big. :D
Tips:
1. The heat source is interchangable.
2. Very carefully fill in the crude oil and let it change into petroleum,
because all the parts in the setup (Tempshift Plates, Liquid chutes, Pipes
need to heat up properly)[when the petroleum reached the pump
and there is no crude oil in the wrong places you can activate the system permanantly]
Pitfalls:
1. If your heat source fails (gets too cold) without you noticing
there can/will be crude oil in the snake part of your petroleum boiler
and the system needs to bee cleaned and set back to "factory settings".
[Better check that your heat source will be renewable
or automate the emergency crude oil switch so the system stops when your heat source fails.
Since i can not know what source you are using I did not present a solution for that in this video.]
2. If you use other Materials than shown here you can not expect the same results.
Every Material has their own thermal capacity and heat conductivity.
So different materials transfer heat at different speeds and store different amounts of heat themself.
3. Use steel on everything that touches your heat source or the door that transfers the heat.
(The airflow tile material deos not matter)
4. If you are building the Glitch-Pump Version:
the airflow tile of the infinite liquid storage above the magma should be steel. The rest can be whatever.
5. If your crude oil stopps for too long the pump (made from steel) will overheat.
Materials:
1. Materials are in the video but the pipes and so can be changed with Aluminum or Cobald
but that changes the required starting thermal energy as well as the length of the snake part (it becomes shorter) for Aluminum Tempshiftplates and Pipes for example you only need 3 snake rows (But the pipes will nearly instantly break if there is no fresh crude oil coming in)
2. If you are building the Glitch-Pump Version:
the airflow tile of the infinite liquid storage above the magma should be steel. The rest can be whatever.
3. The Pump needs to be out of steel

I am getting damaged pipes right before the liquid vent. I suspect the oil is flashing to petroleum while still in the pipe, but how is this possible when the door only lets through 403* of heat at max?
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Had the same Issue in the lets play. That design with the diamond tiles stores alot of energy, so even when the sensor is only at those values the door transfers too much energy into the diamond tiles inside the state-change-chamber. So everything under 10kg of crude oil input is in danger of overheating. I fixed that by: making the tiles above the doors gold tiles and the tempshiftplate also gold. I reduced the heatspike to only one tile width at the top amd removed the tempshiftplate from the heatspike. In the lets play i only used 3kg and then 6,6kg of crude oil. Sorry for the inconvenience

Just to annoy a special someone: What about aluminium pipes? Also at what temperature does the the petroleum leave the boiler? What temperature is the crude oil before entering? My thinking is the following: Petroleum has a higher Heat capacity than crude oil meaning that the conversion should produce some heat energy, shouldn't it? If you made the counterflowsystem high enough (let's say infinitely high for the sake of argument) the boiler wouldn't need any external heat whatsoever, right? The Petroleum should leave at the temperature that the oil is entering. Thoughts on that? PS: I nearly forgot: Best short so far in terms of what it sets out to do. A petroleum boiler needs you to read at least three scientific papers to understand what's going on and how to build it. Streamlined under a minute everything said, that needs to be said, well done
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 3 года назад
Hi Doktor good to have you here. :D I think i need to pin a comment i answered the aluminum question 3 times. (And it is in the description). Aluminum is probably the better choice in terms of how fast the system starts. But if the crude oil stops for even a short amount of time the pipe next to the liquid chute almost immediately breaks from crude oil changing state. Also aluminum has a higher heat capacity almost 7 times higher than gold. meaning you need 7 times the energy to get the system up to heat for the start up. Positives are you need so much less material. But my main reason was that I though Gold would be easier to get your hands on. But that may be influenced by me playing on the asteroid I am on right now. The Temperature of the petroleum is around 100-112°C when using 77-88°C Crude oil as input, if I remember correctly. I tested crude oil with 20, 77, 88 and 99°C input temperature. For your other question: I think I read something like that yesterday in the wiki:that in a perfect system you would only nee to start it once and not put in anymore extra heat. But since this is an imperfect system you need to put in some energy but less that you would need otherwise. But that's just from my head so better check that again. :) Oh and thanks. That was one reasons for the channel itself. People (me included) search for a solution that they don't have time to figure out. Then some tutorials with 35 to 80 minutes lenght pop up. That's why I wanted to present an easy (most of the time not optimal), but functional Version so that there is at least a Version accessible for us that don't have time to read all the manuals.

Hi ASleepyDragon you can probably use less rows than I did. I did not intend to show a perfect build, but a reliable and tested one :). Each Material change changes the endresult slightly. The principle stays the same. The most critical part is not overheating the system, feeding in crude oil constantly and very slowly starting up the system (otherwise you could get crude oil in there).

I think i can skip half of counterflow system by using aluminum pipe or cobalt one
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 3 года назад
Hi Phan Nghia yes probably. Aluminum and Cobalt are way better at exchanging heat. There is no cobalt ore radiant pipe though. But their heat capacity is also way higher so the initial thermal energy needed is higher too. Since I use more pipes that can balance itself i guess. But aluminum has a 7 times higher capacity. I think the materials that are used change how the build looks in the end, but i thought gold may be the most accessible. Hey i am glad for everyone who tries it with different materials :D

@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 10 месяцев назад
Hey davecannon I don't know i understand what you want to achieve. The regular petroleum boiler uses a heat counterflow. cold crude oil flows agains hot peteoleum. Cold petroleum comes out the bottom; hot crude oil out the top. It only uses a tiny bit power aka heat to convert the already heated crude oil to peteoleum. A tank has neither function. Hope that helped. Not sure I answered correctly

The lava doesn't stay hot forever. This will last maybe 100 cycles tops. It needs to be refreshed with a volcano and dug out with a robominer.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 10 месяцев назад
Hey Rich, Yes that is correct. This is not infinite; a volcano could be turned into a permanent setup. The 100 cycles though is far of, if you hook this up to a real magma biome. I think around a thousand would be more accurate. You can also just elongate the heat spike if the magma turns solid. This short is only supposed to show the newer players the easiest possible method (that i could think of at that time) to build a petroleum boiler. If they then understood that they can move on to more elaborate setups.

@@sliceableuser5968 You can go to cycle 100 with just manual generators. I am not sure if there is a non-heat variant of power production. You could use hydrogen generators that are cooled by the incloming hydrogen so you don't need to cool them seperately. Then place them inside of insulation. Or you try to speed run cooling. I know that can be hard because of steel, but either you just do steel quickly or use my Aquatuner setup that needs no steel. You still will need plastic though.

Why do we need to start in a vacuum? Vacuums are hard, time and energy consuming to make on a large scale like that. :(
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Hi Martin. I am not sure if there are petroleum boiler that can have gases between. It would be bad to have gases transfer heat to the wrong places or block the path for the liquid. It destroys the purpose of the heat exchanger. Maybe you can build the walls first and only vacuum out the inside. But that probably will take the same amount of time. We need to find an easier way to make vacuums? :/

I just built this for the first time and I'm having one issue I can't figure out. After a little while of it running the insulated tile that hangs over the thermo sensor right next to the liquid vent starts taking pressure damage. I'm using igneous rock.
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
Hm could be several pressure issues. I am listing a few: 1. not in vacuum so there is gas that interferes with the proper liquid movement. 2. crude oil not fully converted to petroleum before adding more crude oil 3. started the boiler up with too much crude oil (crude oil is denser and more kg fit into a single tile, so of it gets converted it needs more space) 4. some update screwed something up? 5. More liquids than the 2 desired ones are in the chamber The material doesn' matter when it comes to pressure issues. only for temperature resistance and heat transfer. If it keeps breaking you could try replacing that tile with an airflow tile. But it is weird that it is only that tile. of the pressure is too high in that area the tile to the left should also break. So I am not sure. If you want you can share a screenshot in the discord and we check if we find out what the issue might be. :)
@pattycake9319
@pattycake9319 2 года назад
@@Luma_plays I'm going to go over everything again. It's probably on my end. Thanks for the response. The other issue I seem to have is the oil doesn't convert fast enough and starts to collect too much. Any ideas on how to speed it up more?
@Luma_plays
@Luma_plays 2 года назад
@@pattycake9319 The first conversion takes a while because a lot of mass is being refined. After that the energy needed should be small because the counter flow pre heats the crude oil and cools the outgoing petroleum. So the length of the counter flow is a factor as well as the material it is build from. Same goes for the magma spike the tempshift plates the doors etc. every material has their own heat capacity and thermal conductivity. (I am not referring to the walls or airflowtiles. those are not for heat transfer and just need to withstand the temperatures nothing more) This setup is made for a full 10kg pipe of incoming crude oil. fill the chamber a little let it convert to petroleum. add a little more. wait. repeat until everything is filled with petroleum (no crude oil anywhere except the 1 tile where it is dropped. then activate it fully. if your heat source is magma then the the issue is probably the materials of the heat transfering parts. I had to learn that the hard way :D too hot = sour gas everywhere too cold = crude oil blocking the contraption not enough heat = mixture of too much crude oil and petroleum = overpressure those things are finicky but once they run and the input is reliable and the heat doesn't run empty they pretty much go forever. You can also watch the respective let's play episode and see me struggle should be episode 6 of my first let's play I think.

Petroleum can be burned for power. It also creates polluted water. The polluted water can be sieved to clean water. The clean water can be used to get more oil + you have fresh water left over. In short: this gives you power and water.
