I love the fact that you can watch this without the sound. It prevents distraction through choppy and poorly edited vocal explanations, and it really makes you watch what's going on, rather than listen to what's going on. Focuses one's attention very well. Props and likes to you, sir.
This was not the first roll tutorial I ever saw, but it was definitely the best. Coming back now after having practiced my roll for about a year now. I can roll on cement now with very few mess ups. I would highly recommend this video to anyone interested in Parkour or Freerunning.
best roll tutorial i've seen on the web, and trust me, i've seen them all. it is rly a PROBLEM SOLVING tutorial and not the basic stuff "place ur hands like that and roll on ur back hoping u wont exit ur roll screaming" helped a lot, thx Adam
Oh man, this video is awesome! I have been working with all sorts of variations on the pk roll for the last year, made necessary as my muscle memory gets tired quickly due to lack of conditioning. This video helped me realize more things that I am doing right and more ways to change what I am doing wrong! This is one of the best analytical videos for possible problems and solutions that I have found in all my research into this one move! Way to go!
Awesome tutorial. I like how there was text first, so that we got an idea of what you were talking about, and then video after to clarify everything and give us an actual picture. This is possibly the best tutorial I've ever seen, about anything. Subscribed.
I must say that this is the best roll tutorial I've ever seen on the net Thanks that opened my eyes a lot to the various possibilities on how to do a roll correctly!
Thank you so much, I've been doing Parkour for 3 years and have never managed to master the roll but I just watched this and have practiced for around 45 mins now and it is already helping immensely :) Instant favorite right there.
This really truly is the best video for rolls ive ever seen. *High fives* Im very very bony and i have my roll down but i always hit my shoulder and my hip. I did not even think about the angles or any of this. Thank you so much for making such a great video. Im sure it will help us all. Now comes the practice. Then i can finally conquer that nasty cement.
MAN THANKS ADAM!!! This didn't just give me a touch on improving my roll...my roll now is a HELL lot different and easier than the last roll I was doing. And again, thanks dude!
this (in my humble opinion) is one of the best rolling tutorials out there! I can't wait to go out and try this stuff :) thanks for the tutorial...my bruised bones thank you even more.
Great video. I knew all the things this guy said, learning them from my own experience. This guy just showed me a way to explain the roll to others in a better way. Nice job, I give 5 stars.
You're the best dude! I just rolled at 90° degree angle and I avoided hitting my spine and hip bone... Now I need to practice on 35° I think just to keep the momentum on running.
All of you at HawaiiPK/UrbanCurrent are freaking beast. You guys have the best tutorials out there. I'd hope to see even more, but it seems to me like you've put a tutorial out for every thing I've seen done.
This so probably one of the most helpful videos I have ever found, and I have looked! I do come from a martial arts backround and I always had problems with my knee in a front breakfall.... So in short THANK YOU!
Thank you for making this it realy helped me with my roll because i havn't been able to roll on concrete without hurting my hip. Thanks for making such an in depth guide compared to all these 1 or 2 minute videos.
Thank You thank you thank you!!! My hip bone has always been my problem with this roll and I've been struggling with it for years. I've changed form after form, and almost gave up rolling excep from high places, but the angle tip has really helped me out thank you!!!!
All of your videos RULE. Seriously, all other tutorials I had seen focus on one particular technique, which confuses you, this allowed me to understand the only 'proper' way to do it is the best one for you. (:
This a very helpful tutorial. I have come from a Martial Arts background and have been having some of the problems adressed in your video. Hopefully I can go away and fix some if not all of them. Thanks once again for such a comprehensive tutuorial!
This video is very helpful! I have a natural jumping ability and am interested in parkour and always wanted to learn how to do the 'roll move' and I just started using your video, I'm hoping I can learn how to do the roll perfectly using it.
I'm a thin, slightly bony person and I have no real issues with my hip. However, i do sometimes feel it when I screw up my roll. My shoulder and spine sometimes take quite a hit. Thanks for this tutorial, I will have to impliment the things you showed.
this video was a BIG help whenever i rolled i either landed flat on my back or my shoulder hit the ground pretty hard this video helped a lot and now i think i know what i was doing wrong before
Before this tutorial, i was rolling perfect for a non-bony person. However, i'm bony, so my hip hurt for weeks after rolling on concrete, and i just said "oh, that's normal" you probably saved me surgery! tysm :D
Omg! This looks like an amazing tutorial! My top shoulder area kept hitting the ground during my rolls and it would hurt a fair amount. I'm going to try this.. really hope my shoulder loves me for it.
@RussellBanta like the tutorial says it takes a seriously long time, took me 2 years of experimenting. I found that I need to start my roll with my hands way out to my side and finish by reaching way out to my side, that helps me.
I had my roll perfect and didn't do much parkour for a while due to a very cold winter, then this summer my rolls have been off, and often hurt my hip bone. I had spent countless hours drilling trying to get it right and neglecting what I was doing wrong. My rolls are now back and functioning properly.
If the fall is high enough, the momentum from the drop will help you collapse into your roll easier, it will also help keeping our back off the ground.
thanks a lot. I was hurting my shoulder every time i rolled but now I know the problem and I fixed it and now I can roll on hard surfaces a lot better. thanks : D
Recently have been having hip bone pain from rolls, a bad habit must have developed, back to the drawing board, thanks very much for this detailed vid :)
not a bad tuturial. just remember not all martial arts teach the roll the way you described. there is a method were one's spine never hits the ground and the rear leg or knee points forward or in the direction of momentum. on face book "Darkburg" will be posting this version in the next couple off weeks . your ball of toe modification is awesome.keep up the good work.
I don't even parkour, but this was useful because I can't even forward roll without hurting myself, in particular my neck and spine, so this is useful :) Thanks
great vid..any chance of an explaination on the adjusting the angle for the hip bone..i can see that you come out at a different angle but how do you do it
@Adam It's under my knee, above the ankle, like the side of my shin sort of (Sorry I can't recall the anatomical name at the moment). I roll Left shoulder to right hip and it's my right leg...if that matters
Great clip, thank you. One tip: show the examples play at least twice and/or with a slow motion version. That will help to see clearly what you're doing and how you posture the body. Looking forward to more material!
Do you roll with both hands on the ground or your hand and elbow. If you roll with your elbow there will be less strain on your body but your elbow will get cut up
@jneves4pt when you land quikly put your right knee(if your a left handed,do this with your left knee) on the ground then begin to roll.(do this first at grass at slow speed. if you rol never never roll horizontal, you must roll curved. if you learned it do this at jumping with big height if you roll don't give too much power with your feet, you must do it relaxt.not too relaxt you must give a bit power if you roll too slow:you will hurt your feet if you roll fast:you will hurt your back
OMG I FINALLY DID IT!!! I've kept on practicing on my room with a soft mat but still always hit my hip bone, I decided to roll from my right ride which kinda felt weird at first but now I finally did it!!! n then took off the mat n did it on plain ground!!
Thanks for another great vid. The shoulder tips helped a little, but I still feel just too much impact on my upper back, I often just get the wind knocked out of me. Fortunately I've got enough fat to cover my hip, lol. Just gotta work on that upper back.
@pivotwous - oh yeah man. start doing excersises to srengthen ur back and shoulders. 1. bc in parkour u need upper body strength. And 2. bc when u roll. the muscles on your shoulders and back will provide some cushion instead of straight bone to ground contact.
The diamond roll is constantly done by traceurs who don't deal with intense situations. Typically it's good for rolling while running, but the issue is that unless you are wearing gloves (or have super tough hands) when you roll on gravel, asphalt or rocks, you'll take a bit of it home if you know what I mean. So to prevent bloody hands and using a tweezer every time you go diamond, try restricting diamond to soft surfaces, and drill one of these rolls to be more versatile in environments.
I did this really well on carpet and grass. I could even jump off of my swing set and it wouldn't hurt, but then i did one from the QM position on concrete and it hurt my shoulder really bad. Any ideas?
When I roll, I usually hit a small bone on the right of my right shoulder. Not on the front or back, but the side. It hurts. Any ways to clean this up?
i live on oahu and i really want to learn parkour.where can i learn? also i have a problem when rolling.i roll on my right shoulder but my left bottom side of my hip gets sore.is this natural and i just have to wait until i get used to it? thanks
Can you please explain how to do the correct method at 1:47, please? I know this is an old video, but it's a good one, and I keep ending up doing it like the first one (angled at the beginning but coming out straight).
How can I make my roll more forward? Every-time I try the roll I end up flip flopping half way through and landing full force on my right hip. I've tried rolling over pillows to get a better feel for rolling, but since I can't feel anything on pillows I can't tell if I'm doing it right or wrong.
when he roll watch where he lands on his shoulder. you need to go smoothly onto the back of your shoulder because then it will get hit a lot less hard and theres less bone back there
I had this same problem man. It just takes time. Keep drilling it and drilling it. I am now to the point where I can dive roll on to concrete. Once it is completely painless on grass, it's time to graduate to the bearer of cruelty: Concrete. Know when enough is enough. A bruise on your back will go away in 2-3 days (it does for me). Once it's healed, get back out there and keep drilling it. "Practice makes perfect." as they say.
