Dan finally realizes he's done his math wrong, then doubles down in the wrong direction... For what it's worth (which is nothing), If you've spent 100 pounds on 24 items, each item needs to be worth slightly more than 4 pounds to break even.
That's correct, otherwise if the item was 2.50p like he stated at the beginning I believe, the total value of the items would equate to £60. This puts u in a loss of £40, even if each item was £4, the total value of the calendar is £96. Some items need to around 4.50p go get a value of £108 which is closer enough to the star trek calendar, tbh both calendars had some good items but not worth £100/£110 pounds. 80% of what came out was tat and awful.
The fact they somehow came to the conclusion that they were not the initial £2.50 each but £2 and still thought it was a rip off. I wonder when Ashens finally came to realise they are actually £4 - £4.50..
Yes, but at the one minute mark, they bumped the bits that they had just been chewing on, so some blue-haired blue check mark type will complain about them giving each other... that un-named disease of unknown origin. So, we've got that to look forward to.
@@DOSRetroGamer this year, I had the Lego Star Wars Mandalorian calendar while my wife had the Back to the Future 3 Playmobil calendar. She easily won.
Ashens was robbed on his bottle opener day. He should’ve won but Dan wouldn’t accept that it was a bottle opener and insisted it was just a useless piece of tat.
I must say, the Star Trek coasters and K9 tree ornament are probably the best things they've ever gotten from a single day. Also, for anyone wondering, the TARDIS advent calendar was £103 (now £88 with a voucher!) and the Borg Cube was £108 (now £96!) which means each item had to be £4.29 and £4.50 respectively, which... no. Oh, and in terms of Amazon reviews: Doctor Who: 3.3/5, 9 ratings, and the more recent reviews are all negative Star Trek: 4.2/5, 6 ratings, and one reviewer got two Day 6s instead of the Day 9 they were looking forward to
Annual update, for anyone curious... Doctor Who: 4.4 stars, 53 ratings (lot of recent reviews admitting they wouldn't have paid full price) and it's now £49.99 with free shipping Star Trek: 4.4 stars, 42 ratings and while the current MSRP is £49.99, it's been reduced to £39.99... but with £19.99 shipping (one german reviewer stated [in English] that they paid €100 this year for it, which... *_ouch)_* That does now mean that each day is now worth roughly £2.08 and £2.50 which is much more reasonable (although the shipping on the Star Trek one is taking the mickey)
Defending the countryside from the Grassmasks's wrath for another year, The Reliable Reindeer returns to the North Pole (or Dan's closet). Godspeed Reindeer, until next year!
Yeah, if you wanna make a man happy just buy him some quality tools, nothing does the male ego better than the implication that you are useful and good at DIY.
The problem with the toolkit was that it lacked a sense of surprise, it was really just a single item split up into little bits. It did have the best box art though
Yeah advent calendars are never worth the price. The fact you don't know what's in it just gives them an excuse to sell you a bunch of over priced garbage you don't want
I love this series so much. Please never stop. Also, stating again - next year try the Etsy lady that makes calendars by packaging random crap from her house in walnut shells.
The Dalek one looks like it would actually open a bottle, while you'd constantly be rotating the Starfleet one until you found the right angle to grip the cap
@@kdhlkjhdlk I have a felt one shaped like a stocking. All that fits in though are either fun size Mars bars etc, or single serve spirits like Jack Daniels. Needless to say, I haven't heard heard much from the kids this year.
I like the Spock logic design, it has that charming old-school "fanzine made by a few dorks in their basement with all art done by one guy that can't really draw that well" style to it. It's also ACTUAL vintage art and not a modern mass produced replica of the style, that adds a lot.
With the added bonus that you could tell what franchise it was from without being told in advance. I don't think that's the case with the Doctor Who one.
If Ashens Pin badges had been the symbols of the the races they would have had use for nearly every trek fan and would have annihilated the apposing items from the Doctor who calendar
@@TheHopperUK Ikr? They had 5 badges, just do badges of ToS Enterprise , Enterprise-D, Voyager, Deep Space 9 or The Defiant and round the five off with Ent Enterprise. Jobs a good one , no need for the Funko Shite.
@@TheHopperUK I present you 10 good examples of a crap pin badges from both Dr Who and Star Trek, And leave everyone with the thought that had they used the badges that Ace had on her Jacket the Dr Who Badges would also have been more relevant.
Literally came here to post exactly this. What Trek fan wants pin badges of bland Funko-style avatars of characters when there are decades of cool emblems and logos to emblazon upon yourself? Utterly ridiculous.
The reliable reindeer is probably the best thing they've gotten on a single day. Too bad that calendar was incredibly front loaded and the rest of the days were mostly junk.
If I were in charge of one of these branded advent calanders, every single damn day would be some kind of tree ornament or collectible item. None of this sticker and pencil sharpener and pin badge nonsense. When I was a kid, my mom had a set of ornaments of various Star Trek ships that could plug in to the tree's light string, and the engine nacelles would light up and blink or pulse or whatever the light string was doing.
The kitchen towels are actually some of my favourite stuff from this, especially the Star Trek one. It feels like a souvenir from Starfleet Headquarters and it reminds me of all the corporate bits and bobs from Subnautica, how Alterra had its patented technology and its own brands so you could find different objects on the Aurora. It just feels so right. I'd shove that into my spaceship.
I want them to try and build the best advent calendar with a budget and some overarching theme. The items’ quality and prices can vary from day to day so long as they’re all within the budget, so they can strategize to give up some days in order to win other ones.
This is the first time advent has ended with a table full of actual stuff! Even if it wasn't worth the money, that was still nice to see. See you next year!
Yeah sandwich thing doesn't win because the cookies are good - the cookies would still be good regardless. That's down to the recipe, not the Tardis shape. Also, nice grass mask cookie.
10:15 *Ashens:* "When do you see them sharpen a pencil?" *Dan:* "When do you see them _use_ a pencil?" There's probably more footage of them using quills in the holodeck then pencils in all of Star Trek.
Best value for money, sure, but really, it's _one_ item you spend the whole of December getting piece by piece. The screwdriver set is something you'd love to unwrap on Christmas morning as a present. Advent calendars are supposed to be a surprise each morning, to keep that excitement for the season running high. The only surprise each day in the Wera toolkit was whether you were going to get a T5 torx bit, or a #0 Phillips. Who's sitting there saying "oh man, I really hope tomorrow is the 1.2mm pentalobe bit so I can unscrew that Macbook I've been putting off all year!"
Probably because Star Trek fans are likely to already own one. Looking at Eaglemoss' lineup, it's rather weird that they don't have ANY prop pin badges for Star Trek. For Dr. Who they at least have a Tardis pin badge.
As a Star Trek fan I would always welcome more com badges, because a. it means I can bung them on more things and b. it gives me backups. I had a really nice TNG one but in middle school it caught on the cuff of a friend's pants and the stem snapped off...
They could have easily got half a dozen days just with insignia pin badges. Original series, movies, TNG, DS9/Voyager, Enterprise, and a set of rank pips. But those would be more expensive than a couple of fucking stickers.
"You're old enough to be my dad." "Am I? How old are you?" "32." "Uhhhhh not quite." "Yeah no, I'm from Essex though." "Oh god I'm old enough to be your grandad."
nobody tell dan they've just released brand new TARDIS pin badges, different versions for different Doctors. they woz robbed. clearly just getting rid of old stock
That's what makes these not the best calenders. That spices punishment calender was like, well thought out and each thing was mildly interesting. This is so clearly just throwing out overstock. The boxes were even made before anyone knew 90% of the stuff would be small garbage. The insult alone makes me hate these
I got a special edition one this year from America, everything was Beavis & Butthead based. Proper good, no filler in any of the days. The worst thing in any of the days was a pack of cards, but I was happy with B&B cards.
When Ashens had hair I always thought his barber was terrible, but now he's bald I've realised he's just got a really weirdly shaped head. The back of his head is almost flat, there's no definition there at all, it's like a pencil rubber or his neck extends to his crown. That's something I learned from this series.
Here this time every year, love this series. Thank you Ashens for hosting it. In my opinion, content of Star Trek was better but the Tardis box wins it on packaging. Happy whatever to all!
Dan used his Slytherin powers to convince Ashens a pin was better than a bottle opener. And Ashens gave Dan the lone point on one occasion when Dan suggested a point each.
@@Nails_By_Kimberlee 2017, which had one of best (Wera) and 3 of the worst (Frozen, Cars, Paw Patrol). Do watch it, it's great fun seeing their souls being sucked out with each advent day.
From the point of view of someone who's not into Star Trek or Doctor Who, I think I actually like Dan's coasters better. Assuming they are both the same quality material wise and ignoring the fact that Dan's case is damaged, aesthetically I think they look a lot better.
What a wonderful year of advent. Next year we'll all probably be dead from nuclear war at this rate so I'll say I enjoyed this tradition while it lasted
"This keyring is a better size to put on my keys." "But that's not what a keyring is for." ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Merry Christmas! Thanks for the daily laughs! I always look forward to December! Can I vote for an alcohol calendar next year. I wanna see you get pissed as the month goes as you film them in one day 😂
I actually like the magnet, but I enjoy that sort of 70s line drawing. My dad used to be an illustrator and he drew a lot of zine marginalia art like that.
Merry Christmas!🎄 I herewith confess: I alctually really do like the Spock magnet better. That Doctor with the goggles is so of the mill standard, and the motive was used at least twice (as far as I remember) within the calendar! Not very original...
Honestly, this Advent calendar makes most look crate dealios look like a bargain. Overall, I probably wouldn't spend more than maybe $30 CDN on the Star Trek or Doctor Who sets. They'd probably be worth it to the rare person who likes the style of the pins and artworks both. It would have been a fair bit better if all the pins weren't super deformed style. They really screwed Ashens over by not at least including a communicator pin. Ashen's bottle openers is less functional, which is a big minus, but it also looks like a fancy access pass. Wonder if it would fit into some wallet ID slots?
