This perfectly describes how I always try to explain how Adventure time does have an over arching storyline but also kinda doesn't sometimes.

What i really like about Adventure Time is that the characters started as classic character tropes but slowly evolved into their own characters. For example, princess Bubblegum was originally just the princess in need of saving, the “damsel in distress”, but as the show progressed, she became her own character with lore, backstory, and some talents you wouldn’t normally expect from that type of character trope. The same goes for Ice King, the “crazy ice wizard who loves kidnapping princesses”. They did a good job at explaining why he is the way he is and expanding the story through his character. I admire shows like these that like to think outside the box when it comes to the characters that they have and expanding on them.

I wouldn't say that PB used to be an average princess archetype. I mean, the first episode of Adventure Time ever showed in the first scene her experimenting on dead bodies with chemicals. She was a parody of a helpless princess, in a sense

And you could say it all changes that way because Finn (and the viewer) grows up and his perspective becomes more nuanced.

I also like the fact that these functionally immortal characters like Marcilene, PB and Ice King all have history with each other. There are in some cases centuries of emotional baggage tied up between them that effects their current relationship.

There's something very special about the way that this show's exact successes can't really be replicated. A lot of animated shows that came after show clear inspiration, where it often feels like they take a "start out episodic to ease people in, and then throw in your planned overarching narrative" approach. That IS kind of what made adventure time such a hit, but it also isn't. The way it built up its world was so progressive and so organic, that it's something you could NEVER hope to fully replicate. That's something I will always value about it, and it's something that you almost never see TV shows get the breathing room to explore. It's really crazy to think that, as a result, all these years later, people are STILL invested in this world and want to see more of it.

The great thing about adventure time is that not only did it give space for its characters to change and grow, it grew WITH its audience. Finn started out as a 12 year old kid and ended the series at 17. That almost never happens in animation, where you get to see the characters grow up. Everything Finn went through, first kisses, first breakups, all of the growing pains, the audience was experiencing at the same time. Even Fiona and Cake kept up with the trend, AT’s audience had grown up so the show was more grownup. The show itself changed with its audience. When you’re 12 you’re not thinking about serious stuff, you just want to hang out and have a good time with your friends, when you get older you start to take things more seriously. That was AT, it started out as just fun and goofy and ended as something more mature. It’s this beautiful perfect encapsulation of childhood and we’re never gonna get anything like it again. Also I love that the first clip you showed was a great example of how wacky the show was, but it also came from the episode that introduces the enchiridion, which ends up being the MOST important item in the series. Perfectly encapsulates the anomaly that is AT

I've been thinking about the prospect that we'll never get another show like Adventure Time ever again for a long time now. And I think it's kind of sad that it seems more and more true with each passing year. The show really did release in this perfect little span of time where Network TV was still dominant and streaming hadn't fully taken over yet, and so because of that it was allowed to become popular and actually change and grow over the years, and spawn a franchise that has managed to keep up with the changing tides of media consumption. It's something most shows nowadays (especially animated ones) can't really do because they only last for like 1-3 seasons, and Adventure Time's 3rd season is where things really started changing. If Adventure Time ended at season 3 it would still be liked and fondly remembered as a good show, but it wouldn't be 'Adventure Time' as we know it today, and I think it's really sad that many shows with a lot of clear ambitions like Adventure Time, will never ever be able to get there like it did.

another thing is that it feels like there will never really be an “end” to adventure time. the multiverse they established is so vast and complex and leaves so many unanswered questions, and as more adventure time shows come out they manage to make MORE questions. i guess that’s because of the sandbox storytelling. there’s not really going to be an “end” to a story that is about the entire universe

"They went on living their lives." -BMO Thanks for this video. It beautifully captures my favorite thing about this show, the way that its characters and world grew in truly organic - that is, connected but NOT directed - fashion. It was allowed to be messy, to change its tone on a whim, and to move in unexpected and bizarre directions. But it always did so with deep love and respect for its characters, never forcing them to act in a certain way to cram into an unearned narrative beat or for superficial shock value. And in doing so, it created a tapestry that feels far more true to "real life" than almost any other show I can think of. I think there's this common misconception among fandom circles right now that a "good" story is one that was necessarily planned out in advance (currently most often propagated by fans of The Big Scifi Franchise About Space Conflicts). Adventure Time is maybe the ultimate rejoinder to that line of thinking. It tells a multitude of stories over its sprawling 10+ season run that all feel part of a consistent whole, but at no point have Pen Ward, Adam Muto, or any of the show's other brilliant writers ever tried to pretend that they were doing anything other than making it all up as they went along. And IMO, it's that willingness to be creative, to push forward unhindered by narrative convention or fear of "what the audience wants/expects," that allowed Adventure Time to become what it is. It allowed them to take crazy risks, to constantly push the envelope of what the show "is" or "could be," and ended up being all the more philosophically rich, thematically complex, and emotionally textured for it.

Another thing not mentioned here is that AT got to experience his fanbase engagement in real time, and constructing on it. Sometimes adapting fan theories into the show and sometimes subverting those same fan expectations. It was great to experience Natasha Allegri doing some fanart on her tumblr page and then it becoming the whole basis for what now has become the AT sequel. Same goes whit Adam Muto and Rebecca Sugar doing great work in many art fields and being recognized by the public on it via the platform that was adventure time and then going to create great things.

I've noticed a lot of episodic shows have some properties of a serialised show sometimes, and some serialised shows sometimes have stand-alone episodes. I usually just refer to these as semi-episodic and semi-serialised respectively. Though I have noticed that a lot of semi-episodic cartoons keep their characters mostly the same throughout, with the biggest exceptions I can think of right now being: _-Rick and Morty_ (where the status-quo changes approximately every season) _-Craig of the Creek_ (where there is an over-arching plot, but it's still more episodic than serialised) _-Futurama_ (where every now and then there's a tiny change like "oh Leela's got parents now") -and just barely _Phineas and Ferb_ (where some characters remain mostly the same while the main characters Candace and Doofenshmirtz keep trying to learn from their mistakes and keep failing until the finale makes the symbolic literal by putting them in a time-loop where they are the only two people that change each day).

This show has some really adult moments. By adult I don't just mean adult jokes but also genuine horror and thought provoking episodes. I feel like no modern television cartoon channel for kids would ever agree to air this show if it was to be created today, as many modern kids channel's try to appeal to a younger and younger children. Some episodes for examples: The wondertart delivery where Finn and Jake replace the original delivery guy because he's senile and insane. That episode where all the candy kingdom is licked and kidnapped by a bipedal deer, but Jake and Finn can't find out because of physical injury. To end it off the episode where Finn and Jake are trapped in Marceline's closet and Finn sees her naked. Adventure time was wild.

Adventure Time also did story boards. Several different writers would pair off together to make a story. So each time it wouldn't be the same two writers. Thus making it more fresh and original. It would be 11 minutes but feel like 20 minutes. They could fit so much into such a small space of time. I also love how Finn aged from 12 to 18 in the show along with the voice actor.

adventure time was weird… truthfully, but as the show progressed we got such a deep and thickened plot. it’s honestly crazy how they let it all play out. it’s like there’s a plot within the plot. til this day i still yearn to know what happened to all the characters after the show ended. even with the new remakes they have it STILL leaves me wondering because there’s so many gaps that need filling. i really wish they would make more shows on these matters. i still want to know how did jake die, and why did it happen so early? what happened to PB and what lead to the candy kingdoms demise? how did gibbon rise to power the way he did. there’s so many question to be answered.

Adventure time was a storm, a wonder that we will never see again in the western market, where a bunch of comic artists were given almost free reign to do what they liked with their show over a 9 year period. To some extent, it changed the landscape forever. It not only saved CN, it proved that shows with a more serial, character-driven approach can be successful. But the landscape that AT was developed on no longer exists. Cartoon Network shows will not take such a risk again as to go semi-serial, and streaming services will not take the risk to produce ten seasons of a semi-episodic cartoon anymore, We will be hard pressed to see any series get the space that AT had. It's just not happening.
