Oof in 8th grade I pulled two complete all nighters. The one was the night before midterms and and other was when I was packed with homework. Needless to say, I fell asleep during my science exam and then I almost got kicked out of class. I will definetly take your tips into consideration for freshman year👌🏻

As a senior, I've learned a few tips over the past four years!!! 1.) You don't need to bring your textbooks on the first day! At least at my school, textbooks are rarely used and when they are they're for AP classes and I've only ever needed them at home. You can always spot a freshman because they're the ones lugging around 3 textbooks and 5 binders! 2.) Don't get a binder unless you need one! Challenging classes or classes where you get a lot of handouts are classes you should use binders for. For anything else, especially things like English, electives, or non-AP's, you really don't need a binder. They take up WAY too much space and are awkward in general! 3.) Avoid freshman backpack. Only bring as many supplies as you need and make trips to your locker as much as you can. Lugging around your whole locker with you only makes you feel more fatigued and can strain your back. 4.) When you are stressed out about doing homework and reach a mental block, set a timer for five minutes. During this five minutes, focus super hard and get as much done as you can. After that, take a 20-30 minute break and do something calming! Read a book, do a coloring page or crossword, watch a few youtube videos, listen to music, etc. After that, re-evaluate what you need to do and prioritize your tasks. 5.) To prioritize, consider: how many points it's worth, how long it will take, when it is due, and it's difficulty. It's more important to work on something that is a.) worth more points, b.) due tomorrow, c.) and/or is something you were struggling with. Homework is meant to help you practice and cement concepts. Doing busy work (i.e. stuff you already know how to do) isn't worth your time when you could be working on understanding a new math concept, etc.)

Kirsten Meltesen as a freshman I use my backpack because otherwise I'm pretty forgetful and would leave stuff in the classrooms. I still try to keep light and go to my locker and everything, so the point of this is when you talk about the "packing problem" do you mean it as the space backpacks take up or just the amounts kept in them? I do recognize the other advice to your comment as well, I just wanted to clarify :)

"my freshman year I had my lightest coursework, I had all honors classes" *stares into the camera like in the office*
@madi846
@madi846 8 лет назад
lol but seriously y'all, real advice: don't take classes you think you can't handle. no one will blame you for not wanting to take AP or honors EVER. if you want a challenge, or think you can handle it, then go ahead, but don't over stress like this will be the only thing you'll ever do. college (maybe!) comes after high school, then a job, so it's not the end of the world if you didn't "over-apply" yourselves. this isn't to put down anyone who takes all honors/AP (like seriously, kudos to y'all), but there's quite a stigma schools (and AP/honor students themselves....!) have created to make it seems like you aren't smart/working hard/getting into a good college or job if you haven't broken your back with school work. bottom line is, if you just want to take regular classes and get A's, B's, and yes, even C's, then just do that. I can promise you it's okay. really.

If you're the only person from your middle school to be attending your high school, relax a bit. It's an opportunity to start anew. If you don't make friends in the first few weeks, that's okay. Don't force yourself to find a group of people to hang out with.

Tips for freshmans: - USE YOUR PLANNER!! I started getting into the whole organizing school work in January and that's when I started using my planner. Use highlighter or colored pens to know what's homework, test days, essay due dates etc. - Know who your friends are, I struggled trusting my "friends". GET FRIENDS WHO MOTIVATE YOU - Do your homework and get good grades (of course) I have to take credit recovery classes because I slacked off too much last year - BE YOU! Don't try to be like others. Dress how you want, be proud of who you are - don't talk back to teachers, I have witnessed many people in my classes talking back at our teachers. ITS NOT ATTRACTIVE OR FUNNY. Plus respect your elders, do you talk back to your mom? - DONT DITCH! EVER

don't talk back to your teachers is an especially useful tip for some because later they may need help, or an extension, or may want their 89 humbled to a 90. teachers or more likely to help hard working respectful students

I think that the best piece of advice for freshmen (or anyone in high school) would be to not get involved in petty drama. I know it's difficult because it's high school and people can be terrible, but if you start to notice that you tend to be surrounded by drama because of a certain person, it's not worth it to be friends with them. It's better to have a small, close group of friends that you're comfortable with and who won't cause issues and stress than to have a lot of friends who are always starting things with you.

My advice for 9th graders is to 100% out yourself out there. Get to know teachers, students, and staff. The more of a connection you have with the school, the easier and more fun it will be. And also join clubs or sports. Just make a bunch of friends and be outgoing.

Freshman, don't bring all your school supplies the first day of school. All you need the first day is a folder for all the syllabi you'll receive from your teachers, a pen, a pencil, and a highlighter. Have a copy of your class schedule and take a picture of it on your phone. Have a map, too.

I'm going into junior year so it's been a little bit but here's my advice anyway 1. SLEEP!!! It's so important!! It helps you focus and usually makes you happier and less stressed, if you get into the habit of going to bed early freshman year, it'll save you in the long run. 2. Get involved! Freshman year is a great year to try lots of different clubs and after-school activities and gauge your interest. It might make you nervous to go to a new club or tryout for a sport or the musical, but do it anyway. Trust me. This is a really awesome way to make new friends and have fun doing it. Figuring out your interests will help you later when you start thinking about what you want to do after high school. 3. Don't be intimidated by upperclassmen! I did this all the time freshmen year and it wasn't healthy. Sophomore year I got over that fear and befriended seniors, and those friends are some of my favorite people. 4. Know that everyone is in the same boat as you! Freshman year for me was tough because it was a huge change from middle school. But if you go into the year with the knowledge that all your classmates feel just as nervous as you, there's really nothing to worry about. Have an awesome year freshmen!! I'm rooting for you!! xx

Freshman: don't slack. Go ahead and try out for a sport, or band, or whatever. Love yourself, don't wait to start assignments, at least plan as soon as you can. If you're in AP or Pre Ap: ask questions, ask your classmates, ask teachers.

Advice after just finishing freshman year: 1. Get sleep but also dedicate time for yourself after school. Do what you want to do for atleast an hour a day. 2. Be nice to everyone. Be the person to invite others as they are nervous too, and will really like you if YOU invite them to hang out. 3. Do your homework in a place you can concentrate. Putting in 110% effort into the homework means less studying for tests. 4. Honestly, suck up a little bit to the teachers. Just be nice, but not overly aggressive (for example do not ask too many questions). 5. Don't care what people think of you. If you act as yourself, people who do the same or don't will see your true personality and those that still want to be friends with you WILL BE GREAT FRIENDS.
@catherines386
@catherines386 8 лет назад
I'm going into sophomore year (10th grade), so I recently finished freshman year. My freshman advice is: 1.) Grades are starting to matter. Don't slack off! Especially towards the end of the year! I personally went into freshman year thinking I could basically continue to have bad study habits from middle school because I had already taken high school classes in 8th grade where I didn't really study. DON'T HAVE THIS MINDSET! My grades turned out okay, but I have a feeling they would have been better if I tried harder. 2.) Avoid stress as much as possible! This means don't do your assignments the night before when you had a week to do it. Talk to a teacher if you don't understand something. Worrying for a test or cramming homework at lunch are some of the worst feelings because they are so stressful!! To avoid these situations, don't procrastinate, learn how to plan your time accordingly, and ask others for help. Good luck freshmen!!

advice: 1. take freshman grades seriously, as they really boost your GPA and give you a good standing when you start taking higher level classes like AP classes 2. JOIN CLUBS! Many people, including me, are reluctant to join a club because it's new/you're nervous about it or something. But you will regret it if you don't join extracurriculars, trust me. Explore the extracurriculars in your school, and join some that really interests you. This will help so much when colleges starting junior/senior year look at what you did in high school!!! 3. find someone in every class who you can text/call about the class's assignments.

IK this is the most hypocritical thing ever bc I'm always a hoe for stationary BUT DONT OVER BUY!! I still have crap that I bought from freshman year that I will never use (locker decor, a billion pencil cases, etc.) Not only will u be spending money you don't need to, you kinda end up looking a bit dorky as well. Also! Talk to ur teachers!!! Chill out after class and just introduce yourself. It sounds rlly lame, but my best friends in my first two years of HS were my English teacher and my science teacher. Not to mention they let you do cool crap (my science teacher would let me do super cool experiments on my own bc I simply asked and he thought it was super cool that I wanted to learn more and just be his friend) my English teacher later informed me that she spent 9 years abroad in Spain and was able to help me in Spanish when I was struggling. My science teacher helped my grow so much as a person and it's that stuff you really hold onto in life ya know. Just my two cents❤️️❤️️
@cheyenne1095
@cheyenne1095 8 лет назад
Also, befriend people who have good heads on their shoulders. (Rlly hoping this is a universal saying and not something weird my family just says) In the moment, the "it" crowd might seem super fun, but very rarely is their main focus their schooling and well being. Surround yourself with people who will effect you for the better and don't waste your time.... you're worth more than fast friends. This will get you so much farther in the long run and usually makes friends for life, not just people you'll fight with and forget about in a few months. Not to mention being around focused and mature people usually makes you even more focused and mature, which really pays off in the long run.

@Catherine Le I know I'm late with this reply but you should definitely have a bullet journal. All you do is make a calendar on one page and fill it in with stuff. On the next couple of pages you put what you'll be doing each day for the whole month to keep track with your h/w, school and daily life all at once. You can even design the corners of the pages with cute stickers, like how I did! :) -- *Example for the next couple of pages;* September 5, Monday: - ELA Essay (complete today and hand in tomorrow) ☑️ - Science Project (do project early and hand in the papers next week) ☑️ - Do your laundry today ☑️ - walk the dogs ☑️ - daily life stuff ☑️ September 6 Tuesday - Math Questions (Hand in tomorrow)☑️ e.t.c -- Hope that helps! I wish you the best luck on your studies! xoxo

For the freshman of this year, advice i would give is to never give up and stay positive. High school might seem like a scary and overwhelming place at first, especially with other upperclassmen and some of the work given. But if you stay positive and relaxed everything should be alright. Also, don't be scared to meet new people, even if they're upperclassmen. Meet them, Greet them, make friends with them. It'll make adjusting to the school a lot easier and enjoyable. This also includes teachers and guidance counselor. I can't stress this point enough. MAKE. FRIENDS. WITH. YOUR. TEACHERS. and Guidance Counselor. PLEASE. And it doesn't matter which teachers, whether it's your Gym teacher, your Science teacher, your Math teacher or that English teacher you're not very fond with, create some type of close teacher-student relationship. Trust me, it'll help you in the long run. It'll single you out from the rest of the class and teacher will gain more a trust with you. Plus, if you every need a recommendation, like for a scholarship, a job or college, a teacher is the best person to get it from. But if you're the worst kid in the class or if the teacher doesn't really know you that well, they're either going to have a hard time writing one or not write one at all. This also applies with your Guidance Counselor. I'm not sure how it works in other schools, but at mine, they have it so that each student has a separate Counselor depending on their last name, but that is the Counselor you get for the rest of your 4 years. And this counselor is the person who you speak with to set up your classes, the one who you talk to about personal issues and the one who helps you get into any college you aim for. So creating a relationship with them is very important and something I highly recommend you do as a freshman. OOH ALSO, DON'T CRAM IN A LOT OF HONORS OR AP CLASSES UNLESS YOU CAN HANDLE IT ALL. This happened to me and my older sibling and we ended up overwhelmed and barely passing. Honors and AP classes mean a lot more work and dedication than your regular class, but passing the class does mean you get more credits than a regular class and the opportunity of college credits for taking an AP class. But it's still a lot of work and can be overwhelming if u take a bunch of them you can't handle. So, I advise that if you take one, take an Honor or AP in a subject you're fond of. It'll be easier to understand and it you won't be bored in a subject you like. But, especially with Honors or AP, if you every find yourself stuck, please don't hesitate to ask questions. Being lost or confused won't help and you might fall behind, which is a big no-no. Teachers are always there to help, they practically get paid for it , but if you're too shy, ask a classmate or look it up. Gosh, i didn't mean to go on that long but there is soo much i want to tell you that I wish i knew as a freshman. But, overall, the best advice I could give is to take each day, each class, and each person with one step at a time. Go at your own pace and find your own limits and have fun :) This is a brand new chapter in your life and it's all about how YOU make, so make it the best you've every had. :) ~k

I have some tips for freshmens too :) 1) Experiment with everything! Try new things in studying, make new habits, experiment with new classes, take yourself out of your comfort zone. This experimental-thing could really helps you in another section of your life, and course, in uni/college is good! 2) Be really good in something, and find your passion. 3) Be nice with other people, don"t bully, and If you have problems with somebody, try to have a conversation with him/her or please find an adult! Have a nice high school-time! :)

My number one recommendation, especially for freshmans, is to make sure you have all your credits and courses planned out. Don't just pick courses blindly. Know what credits you need to graduate and take a look at your course request forms for courses your interested in taking and that will count toward your final credit count and make sure you have it all mapped out before senior year. The worst mistake you can make is waiting until last minute. And take the advice in this video as well, she gave some solid advice :)

Tips for freshman - 1. Work very hard. 2. Try to take 2-3 APs. 3. Finish your homework as soon as you get home. 4. It's okay to sacrifice a bit of sleep ex. Right before a test. 5. Don't have a planner because it's a waste of time to maintain it. 6. Apply to scholarships. 7. Make connections with your teachers. 8. Narrow your focus to important extracurriculars and take part in competitions.

DONT BE FRIENDS WITH THE WRONG CROWD. Don't hang out with the wrong people because if you do, they might influence you to do things and will distract you from school and homework! DON'T SKIP CLASSES! EVER! (Unless you are really sick or does not feel good). There are some teachers who gives you point for showing up and being there for class. That could be crucial! FOR GIRLS!!! Always bring pads/tampons! Some girls start their period late so you might never know when it might start!

I am a freshman, and yes... we are unprepared. I am getting into stationery and plan to reform my study methods at some point, and have such invested in stationery, often carrying an excess of what I need with me. I like to lend my pencils/pens to my classmates, but my tip is to MAKE SURE THEY GIVE YOU SOMETHING IN RETURN, that you later give back to them. This ensures that you will ALWAYS get back your pen/pencil/whatever it is that you loan to them. As soon as anyone takes an item from my stationery collection, I have them give me their student i.d., phone, or anything of equal or higher value to my pen. When they return my pen in working order, I give them back their items. Since I have implemented this system, none of my stuff has been stolen or vandalized.

As a junior I have learned that transitioning from 8th to freshman can be really difficult 😥 and confusing but you will adjust just be determined and keep persevering, it will all be worth it . In freshman I had all A pluses and one A minus which brought down my gpa to a 3.9 and also don’t forget when transitioning yo high school 🏫 don’t forget that it is ok to ask questions no one is going to penalize you for it. Edit; I know I wrote this late but I just wanted to share with y’all.😤

I am a High School Junior and if there is one thing I have seen in the students is that they all lost there drive to keep going somewhere. (Indian education system is hell, though) If there is one advice I would give, it is to keep motivating yourself and taking care. Have fun and live your life. Keep a balance. That slight depression that some people have is not good. Good luck!

Here's something I wish somebody told me: Its ok if you don't feel good in a school, its ok to change it, switch schools, classes, anything. I spent four months in the wrong school for me and I hated that place, but I liked the courses (in italy we have different schools for everything, a language one, a psych one, a classical studies one..) so I stayed for a while, but until I changed school I felt awful all the time. Also, don't stay with people that make you feel bad - if you meet new people your first year and you find out that they are not really good for you, please don't keep hanging out with them. A girl literally stalked me my third year but the second I got rid of her I found real friends, friends that help me with anxiety and do not help the anxiety get over me. School is stressful enough without negativity coming from classmates - I now it just now that Im in my fifth and last year.

Class of 2021! Here are some tips for freshmen (aka class of 2023/2024). -take notes of everything you think will be brought up in an exam and study over it. -keep organized, especially with COVID, and most students having to do classes on zoom. -email teachers and interact more. -I know it may seem early, but the three years will fly by quickly and you'll be like me, applying for college and stressing. Make sure to begin brainstorming what major or minor you'd be interested in. If it's art, music, etc, begin practicing and making sample portfolios. -make a list of dream universities you have and look up their average GPA, and try to keep your GPA above that by at least 5 points. I wish I had done this (": -Even though some universities will be test optional for years to come, keep in mind you'll need to take your ACT/SAT in junior year. Take practice tests in sophomore year but research the subject the end of freshman year. -have fun but be smart!

TIPS FOR FRESHMAN: 1) If you have any AP classes, please try to do your best. Have a journal and take notes and be organized especially in that class. When I was a freshman, I goofed off in my AP world history and got a 2. Now as a junior, I'm trying to work my ass off bc my school let's me retake the exam but now I have 4 AP exams to do adding the ACT to do my best. 2) If you have a class that you don't understand, like say math or science. Keep notes and the lessons that your teacher teaches you bc I've learned that especially in math. it'll help you a lot. Say you have algebra 1 freshman year, sophomore year you'll have geometry and some geometry stuff has algebra notes that you can easily just go back to your journal. I did that in sophomore year and it's helping me out junior year.3) With your notes. YOU DON'T HAVE TO MAKE IT LOOK PRETTY OR COLOR CODE ANYTHING. A simple highlighter or just a black pen works if you're a simple person. of course, if you like color coding, go ahead. I feel like some people are kinda encouraged to do that and they don't learn that way. There's this format that just recently has be taught to me. Roman numeral will be the general topic. then indent and get A that is a specific topic. 1 will be examples or more specific information. example would be I. Suicide Squad A. The Power That Amanda has over the squad 1. Deadpool's daughter 2. El Diablo is guilty of his family. That format has helped me be organized. sorry if that was a bad example!
@Darkangelkeyli
@Darkangelkeyli 8 лет назад
like Sareena said, always have a contact information with someone in your class. especially if you don't understand it. have more than just one person in case that person doesn't know something. I don't have much tips bc It's already midnight for me (ik i need to get a good sleeping schedule.)

heres some advice not just towards freshies, but to those who need help (but i have a different education system so i dont know those AP classes (the only ap we have is araling panlipunan which is basically philippines history...?) or that gpa thing sooo) 1. before classes start and i mean CLASSES find out what study method/s work for you. dont do it in the middle of the year because you'll stress out and panic and we dont want that. 2. take clubs that you can do. just because everyone says to join one doesnt mean you should join a sports club if you have bad stamina (unless you really want to). i cant really relate to these because in my school we're forced to join a club so academics are always balanced 3. talk to the teachers. like seriously, i spent an entire school year just throwing jokes and terrible puns at them, and hey, you might get to do new things because of them. 4. get a group chat per class (idk how that feels to have a lot of group chats so), and ask if you need help. ask your friends, your teachers if you can, just don't do it by yourself. last and the IMPORTANT ONE i swear 5. if you fail a test and you need to improve really badly (coughs at math), study alongside someone. if they know things you dont, better. i never work well with bigger groups like with 3 because i dont like a lot of people so i stick to a pair work. i usually recommend friends because you're more open with each other.

It is so much fun to do, you have something to do over the summer, you make lots of amazing friends, (if your school counts it as one) you get a P.E. credit for each summer, football games are so much fun. Im an 8th grader about to go into high school and i was lucky enough to be in marching band with the nearby highschool because i joined color guard. Now i have so many high school friends for next year. Just take my word for it, at the beginning i cried and i felt sick i wanted to quit. but i stuck with it and now i have a passion i could even take with me to college!

I'm in Canada so grade 9 was my second year of high school, and it was honestly really laid back for me. I'd already been there for a year, i knew the teachers and the students, and I didn't get very much homework so I had lots of time to focus on extracurriculars. Now I'm sooo busy though. Anyway, I hope all the freshmen are having a good time in high school so far :)

This is so great! I really wish I saw this Freshman year, even though I feel satisfied with my grades, I still developed the habit of procrastination and now struggle with it. However I thought this video was soo helpful and I just wanted to put out there to all the Freshman that your first year of high school is going to be great, there may be some bumps in the road but I promise that it will get better if you're determined to make it better, and if you feel like you can't do it alone then that's okay. Don't ever feel like your a burden to others for asking for help, because after all, your needs are your number one priority, and if they can't see that then they probably should'nt be important in your life. So always remember that not only are your grades and your knowledge important, but also your mental condition. You are outside who you are inside. I'm sorry if that didn't make sense but in my point of view that's how I would see it, so good luck to all of you and thank you again for the wonderful video.
