There's 1 mechanic that makes this a must have game and that's the fact that you can be flying full speed and transform at any times which is not only incredibly satisfying but can make for some really cool looking flying

This makes me think of Sky, a fun game on mobile and soon to be switch. (Its made by the same creators of Flow, Flower and Journey.)

Interesting. Seeing this now, it kinda reminds me a ton of Sky: Children of Light. No multiplayer of course in this one, but the two games seem kinda similar especially with the spirits' memories and stuff.

Bro I had all of the same thoughts throughout my own play through! I kept landing on random smaller islands and explored only to get disappointed when I realized there wasn’t really anything on them. That made me just look over most of the islands and just head straight for the temple everytime since I knew I wouldn’t find anything. Still really enjoyed the game and had a lot of fun with the flying. This was by far the best game review I think I’ve ever seen.

I'm a proud owner of this little masterpiece and found NOTHING wrong with it.

This game was amazing in style and flying simulation. I also wish there was more to the story. That maybe there was some sort of reward. It would have been cool if maybe you could have grabbed things with your claws, or some sort of puzzle involving the flying. I guess I got lucky with clipping and rendering (never had those issues). The ending was a bit of a dissapointment. That being said, I look forward to future games, hoping they improve. The style is lovely and unique. I care about what happens but there was just that little something missing. They are working on a new game and are being secretive about it. However, they have not put down possibilities of it being a sequel!

The soundtrack is honestly AMAZING

Just bought it for a dollar on ps4. I'll update when I'm finished with the game Update: just finished the game and got the platinum trophy. It was worth the dollar that's for sure. Liked the music and art. It had some buggy and glitchy missions but I can't complain for the price. I looked up a walkthrough to get the glitchy mission that's called hide and seek. Overal a nice game for a dollar

I'm playing this game right now on my Switch, and I agree that it's a good game. :) I'm having fun. Currently inside the snow-island temple. Aside from sidequests, the main thing I'd say AER needs is some sort of small collectible. Not like, a super-drawn-out, extensive, obligatory, complex collectible like the korok seeds in botw or star pieces in paper mario... but it'd be nice to have *something* to help lead you from island to island aside from just the exploratory parts. Maybe there could be some series of like 10-to-20 archaeologically significant relics that you could carry in a small pack on your back from each important/significant island which help to give you more information about the culture of the people, or pieces of an ancient poem (like he said, sidequests) that some NPC historian wants which could lead you to a bonus you wouldn't achieve otherwise. Something like that. Other than that, I actually like the lack of enemies. It certainly feels *strange* going through a world without expecting having to fight something around every corner because I'm definitely more accustomed to Zelda games, Pokemon games, Mario games, etc... But it's also nice to be able to just relax and explore without worrying about boss fights and random ambushes and stuff. I suppose you could say that the pieces of information you find scattered throughout the islands kind of counts, but the problem is, I don't really remember a lot of what was talked about within those reader-things. Now, this is largely because I left the game for awhile and then came back, but it's still something that was an issue for me. I think that even if all the game did was give you a little notebook so you could refer back to the giant plaques you already read, that would be helpful.

I liked just how beautiful it was

this actually gave me an idea for another game: you start out answering several questions based on your personality which would lead you to a character with a specific spirit animal that they could transform into during the game. while i dont have a story ready for this game, the overall objective would be to learn skills both fighting and other as both the human and animal in order to go through the world and reach some "great evil". depending on what your spirit animal is and what skills you picked up throughout the game there are different ways to deal with the boss: kill, weaken into submission, change their heart, etc. while doing all of this there are no enemies you actually must "kill" but you can build up an army with them or just find ways around them etc. the point is the fate of everyone and everything around you is in some way controlled by your actions. i know its not exactly the most original idea but with some of the gameplay mechanics and graphics of this game i feel like it would be really cool.

Seems interesting, the flying mechanics is making me want to try it out, I like it.

Just discovered this game on the Switch and I love it. This is a great game to watch someone play or just chill out after a hard day at work. I wish more developers would consider making more chill out games. I would buy this game again if the developer added so polish. Better jump control, climbing, progressive bird controls like loops and barrel rolls..., journal, character animations... Overall very fun and relaxing to play, again I wish more developers would consider making short chill out games. I have no problem shelling out $20 for a polished five hour game. Honestly if a game barges about hours of game play I’ll pass it up knowing it’s just full of fetch quests.

So the pc Im buying will have a 500gb ssd and a 1tb hard drive, I was wondering if you think that thats enough storage. Secondly since the new graphics cards are coming out soon i was wondering if it would be worth the wait to get a cheaper graphics card. The game would completely loose its flavour with the addition of enemies and all that stuff you are talking about, you need to think about the author intention when you analyse this possible features or their absence. Good try of a review though.

Barry, you've commented a few times that you had motion-sickness playing a few games on consoles and when you went PC, with more options of settings, that helped you overcome it. i have been playing it on switch and i cannot fly?? she just dives straight downwArd and theres no way to prevent that,, flapping doesn't make her veer upwards of anything?? has anyone had the same problem

I agree with you for the easy puzzles unexplained parts and a lot of missing parts but the only think I disagree with you is enemies. I don't think enemies would fit these games and it's also the reason I played this game. I wanted to take a break from fighting enemies and relax and this game did it's job. We have enough games with enemies no need for more.

I don't think enemies necessarily need to be destroyed, but they would add an extra layer of obstacles. For the most part Oddworld was a stealth game as Abe had no ability to fight. But it was insanely popular nonetheless.

How is noone talking about how similar this game is to SKY: Children of the Light. AER came before SKY and how am I JUST finding out about this game now !? Did the companies work together to create SKY as a better development ? The glowy spirits, the candles, the flying, the different worlds, the leaning in front of a statue ideas.. I am so amazed right now. AER is beautiful and what a SHAME that it didnt do as well D:

Something about how empty the world intially seemed made just want to dig deepee to find details. Stuff like the dead animals or ghosts. Yes maybe it couldve used more, it wasnt uncommon to circle an island and not find anything interesting, but peicing together the story helped alleviate that. What i wish most was that the ending had more closure

Hey Barry, you should try the game stellar overload it got a pretty fun campaign and once your done with that there is still tons of exploring to do in an entire galaxy. My only complaints about stellar overload is how when they tried puzzles it was a similar thing to what your explaining about AER.

Yet another game I can play with the Gamecube controller, nice!

Hey Barry, you Should play "A Hat In Time" It's a great indie platformer that can compete with Super Mario Odyssey

While I agree with you about the zelda critiques, I have to say I feel as if breath of the wild isn't as basic as you describe it. Botw feels like a real breathing world, and you really don't have to even start the main quest to get the majority of the experience. the only thing you miss out on is the camera rune and the memories, which only take about half an hour of questing to receive after leaving the great plateau, and some special tribe armor's. While the armor's are cool, they really dont make or break the game. I am upset the didn't give link a voice, but by adding in a little voice acting, they made me really care about what I was doing. But then again, that's just my opinion.
