Aethelstan, the son of Edward the Elder and the grandson of Alfred the Great, was the first King of England. He died in Gloucester on October 27, 939. He never married and had no children. His last wishes were to be laid to rest at Malmesbury Abbey instead of in Winchester where his father, grandfather and half-brother had been buried. The location of his original tomb is unknown. In 1539 during the dissolution of monasteries under Henry VIII the Abbey was closed and sold and eventually fell in to decay and was even further damaged during the English Civil war.
A tomb and effigy was made for the king called "Aethelstan the Glorious" in the 15th century. The tomb lies empty tucked away in the corner of Malmesbury Abbey.

Excellent synopsis! Athelstan should be better known as truly the first king of England. Too many people think that credit belongs to William the Conqueror.

Ohhh dear! Do they?! I come across most people thinking it was Alfred. 💚

@Evelyn. True although he was King only of Wessex. AngloSaxon history should get more attention!

I don't see why, considering he defeated Harold the saxon King.

Not sure, as a Scot, I’d call Athelstan “progressive”.

After a little over a year being a part of this wonderful community, here, FB and TT, learning from you has been a gift that i will forever treasure. The wonderful stories you tell, the books we read, history is now making sense to me. You are able help us ❤understand a part of history that is complicated and instead of getting stuck in all that mud of history, it gets clearer each time i listen to you. 0:01

Wow! Love this video, you make me want to research more history. Who knows maybe one day they'll find where he's buried. Remember when they found King Richard buried in that parking lot?

They’ve combed over this area pretty thoroughly. Sometimes monks would move bones and hid them when they knew Henry’s men were coming. So 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ 💚

@EvelynEdwards

There are two theories as to why he never married. He was incredibly pious and celibacy was celebrated then. Also it could have been a condition of Wessex accepting him as king- that when he died and the line would not continue through him.

I don't think England will ever have such an amazing and positively progressive king ever again. I don't think the role of the king is set up for this to be the case.

Yes. Aetrhelstan was the first King of the English and as you say held sovereignty over the whole of GB for a time. Educated, intelligent and caring, his court became quite possibly the most influential in Europe so much so that some European rulers sent their sons to be educated at Aethelstan's court. I have for years now thought I will definitely invite King Aethelstan to my fantastic dinner party for selected former monarchs of England. A great man about whom we know little other than that he achieved much.

No. If you pause and read the sign Aethelstan Gifted the land of Kings Heath to the people of Malmesbury after his death and that is the year it became officially theirs.
