I like that Ian didn't care for the strategy of the game and instead decided to improve Serge's experience by showing the Knight card and explaining it to him. Nice guy!
You only get the initial resources from the SECOND settlement that you placed at the start of the game, so you can only get 3 resource cards at most before the dice' first roll.
This is the first video I have watched and I'm only 5 minutes in, but I can already tell that you guys are great and make niche, good entertainment. Keep on growing. 😀
I didn't know people played the base game anymore. Our group hasn't played this in years, but even with brand new players, we would use cities&knights.
Our group tends to alternate because we've only got the base and the Seafarers expansion. Some of us love the ocean and gold, and others like the mostly land. Cities & Knights is on the list to get, but there's so many other games, and so many of those games have expansions.
personally, when i play catan with new players, i only use seafarers. however, if i am playing with players who have already 4 ish or more games under their belt, i really like using the river, fish, and seafares together
Last time I played, I was the Sheep Queen. I got first turn, so I parked on some sheep, and then was forced to park on more sheep. I had all of the sheep, and eventually roaded my way to a port and declared myself Sheep Queen. My brother has also been the Wheat King a couple of times.
Guaranteed at some point while playing this game, I will sing a portion of at least one song titled Road to Nowhere (there are several). Road to Tipperary is also a distinct possibility. Our group actually never uses the robber because we hate him and all that he does (most especially the fact that if we steal from someone, then we're an asshole and everyone wants to steal from us, and then it's just a game of stealing forever). So our house rule is just that he laughs evilly at us if we roll a seven, and then repeatedly mocks whoever rolled the seven until they roll something else (we have a designated laugher). He's also usually homeless because we replace the desert with a useful tile of some kind. So the robber just wanders the coastline and mocks people for their bad rolling (when it isn't somebody's turn, they will often take control of him and have him do things, such as trying to drain the ocean via drinking it. This has no effect on game play, except that sometimes it cracks the group up and we have to stop until the laughter subsides). Our terminology is: Rocks, Bricks, Wheat, Sheep and Wood (we also sometimes call the robber God) I don't remember what they officially are.
Wow they started with too many resources. You only get resources off the second settlement not both settlements as they played. They need me to come teach them board game rules. I can be the board game judge just like Serge is to Magic Pre-prerelease. I remember competing in the Catan World Qualifier in 2014. That was so much fun. I took 6th out of 28 participants. Not bad.
