AFMF Tested in 8 Games (AMD Fluid Motion Frames / Frame Generation)

Today we test AMD's Fluid Motion Frames, or AFMF for short, in 8 games. AMD currently has two flavours of frame generation, namely FSR 3 and AFMF. AFMF works at a driver level, whereas FSR 3 has to be implemented by the game itself to be used.
AMD, AFMF, Frame generation, FSR 3, FSR3, frame gen, AMD Frame Gen, amd frame generation.

Seeing that this video is gaining more views due to AFMF officially launching today, just want to note that the performance with the latest official drivers are pretty much identical to this video. I retested a few of these games and they all performed within the 1-2% margin of error.

I'm amazed so few people are actually talking about this. I've been using it in a few titles and are all looking and running amazing with afmf. Except starfield, the game itself is so jittery as far as frametime in cities afmf has a hard time smoothing that out. But the tech is really working. I'm also amazed amd isn't grinding to get this out and market it. A frame generation tool that works well on anything is really something to boast right now. Feeling good about the longevity of my xtx with this.

I believe AMD will make a bigger fuss about this when it "officially" launches early next year. At the moment we are all BETA testers, and I am perfectly fine with that if it means they release a good product eventually. So far I have very little complaints, except for UI elements in some games. But I do think it can be improved with a bit of time, but it's really not a bad piece of tech this. As mentioned in the video, if a game supports FSR 3 you'd be better off using that as it never dynamically disables, and UI elements are kept mostly intact. However, on games which wont get any official frame generation updates, this is really good.

That first preview driver was rough, but this oct 13th one I've been using (think it's the 3rd?) has been almost perfect. Not quite perfect, but darn near close enough where I want it on so far on everything I run.
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews 8 месяцев назад
@@chrislemery8178 Yeah exactly, the first one was pretty rough as it didnt even want to install on my RX 7600 test system! They fixed it a day later and I was able to test it then, but it was quite buggy for other games. The last one seems to do okay with all the games I have tested and if you can look past the few UI issues I dont see why not to use it in all games at this point. I reckon there would eventually be a game where it is completely broken, but so far so good.

I tested the recent preview drivers and honestly most games felt worse with afmf, despite showing more frames they felt less smooth @3440x1440. I’ve heard great reports at 4 though, maybe its the resolution. The only game that feels alright is forspoken demo for me. In gta v I was getting 144 fps and it felt weird moving the camera, without afmf it felt a lot smoother.

Honestly pretty good, using it to turn 30fps into 60fps in ark survival ascended (playing on controller it works well and mostly stays on). When they make it not be as artefacty and it stops making the experience worse in 2/3 games it'll be amazing. I am honestly so glad it works as well as it does in ark! I only tested it briefly and frame pacing became quite a bit of an issue, where one frame for example would take 5ms to render, the next 15ms, and the next 3ms etc etc. And those are noticeable. But Daniel did a good video on this if you want to check it out! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WjAp45M-MHk.html

The real win for AFMF is for 240Hz+ users because at 100+ fps the FMF artifacts are smaller and the disablement become rare because the gaps between frames are so small. And 240+ is basically impossible to hit in most games, but 120 base is very doable.
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews 8 месяцев назад
Yeah indeed, at 240fps final output you'd need hawk eyes to notice any issues with the interpolated frame. It's good at 60 going to 120, but it will be awesome going from 120 to 240, and the input latency increase would be almost imperceptible.

Why is the FPS on the left hardly different from the FPS display on the right? What is the difference between the two displays? Is one of the two possibly reading incorrectly?
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews 6 месяцев назад
The FPS on the left is what you'll get without AFMF, and on the right is what you'll get with AFMF. The one on the right is about double, but AFMF does dynamically disable frame gen when there is a lot of movement, and then the numbers will be the same.

I hope it gets it because it is a game that can greatly benefit from it. From what I know the tech drivers dont include AFMF for Alan Wake 2 yet, but I am busy recording an Alan Wake 2 video that will include AFMF, if I can get it to work. Even if it doesnt, it should get support with the next tech driver update, or soon after, but would like an FSR3 implementation!
@HanvaSuzik
@HanvaSuzik 3 месяца назад
why those 2 fps counters showed different number during AFMF??
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews 3 месяца назад
I explained in the video. MSI Afterburner does not account for the extra frames when using AFMF, so the one on the left will be the base framerate without the generated frames, and the one on the right is counting the generated frames too.

This turning itself off thing makes this pretty shit for me personally. I'd rather take a rock solid 60 over 90 fps with constant dips to 60. I expected this behavior to change with the inclusion in the mainline driver, but AMD's gonna AMD.
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews
@Mostly_Positive_Reviews 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, the inconsistency is quite jarring. The thing is, normal frame gen needs to be implemented by the game itself. Whereas with AFMF it is driver level. When implemented in the game itself it's UI aware, so UI artifacting is kept to a minimum. Driver-level Frame Gen cant be UI aware, and that is why it disables during fast movement, or at least one major reason. But the big reason is artifacting during fast motion unfortunately. I still dont know what this is made for though. Maybe 2D side scrollers? Or Top-down RPGs? Any first-person shooter is a definite no go, and so would 3rd person shooters be.
