I'm a black headbanger, had family members telling me I'd get lynched at a metal concert since I was 18. I'm 57 and I've *never* been hassled at a metal concert. The one time (at the world-famous Baltimore spot called Hammerjacks) someone walked up and asked me what I was doing there, I was like, "I'm here for the music, what about you?" Dude was like, "Cool!" bought me a beer and went his way.

Now you really touched a subject that's been bothering me for a year: African Metal Scene. I've musically travelled to the Far East, East Europe, Middle-East, South Europe, South America, North America, Central America, Oceania and, of course, Central and North Europe. But besides Egypt, Africa seems completely forgotten by us. And most don't seem to care. It really bothers me that Metal has become such an "European" genre. We have straight blond hairs spinning all around on live performances and little to no women or black guys in bands. C'mon, FOLKS!!! It's the 21st century! Wake up! I don't want Viking stuff only! And talking about Satan doesn't bother society. We've got to support the underground metal scenes all around the world, from every kind of band. I was listening to Darkestrah the other day. It's an awesome Black Metal band from Kyrgistan. There's also Folkheim, from Chile, and many others. And when I say that, I don't mean women, black guys, asians, arabians etc. should have special treatment; I'm saying they have no treatment or whatsoever. Drop your viking screams a little and go listen to Ch'Aska's Inca language. And favorite foreign band? Vader, from Poland. But it's European, so no news. Outside Europe and the USA? I'd say it's Krisiun.

I've seen that thread I think, though if I remember most of them were from Namibia or South Africa and didn't incorporate much "traditional" sound. Check out Dividing the Element from Zimbabwe - the lead singer/guitarist Chris Van is an awesome guy and a very close friend of mine. Most of their lyrics are in the local language Shona and they incorporate some traditional African percussion in a few of their songs though they mostly fuse their style with the more modern "sungura" or "mvenge-mvenge" genres. Check out their song Upenyu(ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--gX4B_x-3Ko.html), it's probably their closest to what you're looking for. Hope you enjoy!

I love how different cultures' use of their own traditional instruments in metal has created such a broad range of music under the umbrella of "folk metal". I'd love to see a video on that, like the differences and similarities ranging from Eluveitie to Tenggar Cavalry to Chthonic to Al-Andalus. For the record, my favourite of these is probably Chthonic, ironically I think I love their unplugged acoustic stuff even more.

That Wagakki shoutout though! Most of what I've seen of them (including the one you showed) are Vocaloid covers but their sound is so fucking rad (IIRC, the cover included was Senbonzakura. My favourite from them is Tengaku) I went through a huge doujin metal/j-metal phase from 2 years ago to like. still lowkey ongoing today. My favourite is the metalcore circle Draw the Emotional (whose leader is now producing for Babymetal BTW), but there's a good selection of decent material in the Touhou scene (I hardly even ever played Touhou but the music is so good), from Demetori to Foreground Eclipse to Undead Corporation (who are now signed and doing original stuff, which is fantastic.)
@actuallyasriel
@actuallyasriel 7 лет назад
Oh, there's also Vocaloid metal, which I still think deserves its own video. Utsu-P, Okame-P, Muryoku-P, and LIQ are all fantastic producers who use the engine in really different ways to accent their heavy, emotional, symphonic, and thick instrumentals, respectively. There is so much in the Japanese underground music scene that I rarely bring my head above the water for the more well-known J-metal groups, although I definitely respect them as well.

I'm having a conversation with myself at this point, but visual kei is something I've started to explore as well. The neoclassical group Versailles have particularly struck me.

Japanese metal (which includes so much more than just Babymetal) has always been so interesting to me that I made two PowerPoints on the metal scene in Japan for my Japanese class. one being about the history/sound and the other being about visual kei which is their take on the visuals of glam but taken to an obscene extreme

Canada really surprised me with how many damn good bands come from there, like I have no trouble believing Canada is more "metal" than the US. As for foreign bands, one of my go-to recommendations is Aspid, a technical thrash band from Russia.

+thatisjustgreat They're definitely good, but I should mention that when I said "As good as Eluveitie," I meant how it's literally half Celtic folk music and half melodic death metal. I didn't even know what a hurdy gurdy was until I found that band, but it's awesome. I really want to see more of that. Most bands labeled as folk metal just focus on the guitars and drums like any other metal genre. It doesn't mean they're bad, of course, I was just disappointed that I couldn't find any others like Eluveitie.

I love seeing this kind of thing, the boundaries that it breaks down, and the fact that pretty much no matter where you go as a metal fan you'll probably run into someone wearing a maiden shirt and have that instant connection (I've run into Sherpa people high in the Himalaya that commented on some of the metal shirts that i was wearing trekking, and they were fans!) Awesome!

I think that my favourite band from a country other than my own is Eluveitie, which did prompt me to learn more about the Celts, particularly their history on continental Europe. +TheOkeyMaster Start with the classics like Deicide, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Death and Cryptopsy if you are looking for classic death metal. Ton's of other bands from around the world like Swedish death metal band Edge of Sanity listen to crimson for a fucking masterpiece and of course you got your black metal bands like Dark Throne, Emperor, Deteriorate/my favorite by far out of all the black metal bands) and Dark Funeral, early Behemoth and of course Mayhem and Burzum. Those are just recommendations of the top of my head Go to a site called Encyclopedia Metallum the best place to find great metal from any genre. www.metal-archives.com/

Did someone say black metal! since all the classic 2nd wave 90's metal's covered, here's some relatively new: Drudkh, Agalloch (everyone loves agalloch!), Mgla, Saor (celtic metal!), Watain, Sigh (Black metal weirdness from Japan), Ne Obliviscaris & Destroyer 666 (from down under), and finally, Marduk(for the old school high you might look for after this). These are the bands that I can rattle off the top of my head; enough to get you started!

I've been listening to Sabaton for years, actually. Definitely an amazing band. I've actually learned about a few really good bands through them, namely Amaranthe, Ancient Bards, and Twilight Force. I listen to power/symphonic metal almost exclusively, so I've begun delving more and more into the obscure and lesser known bands lately.

This is totally awesome, and I will have to check it out. My 2 favorite non-American metal bands from countries one doesn't immediately think of when thinking of metal are Kekal, originally from Malaysia, and Onmyo-za, from Japan. Kekal is less metal these days, and more an amalgamation of styles, but they started as black metal, and morphed into an extreme Avant-garde sort of sound. Onmyo-za is a fantastic band that often gets lumped in with the Visual Kei movement, because of their aesthetic and dress, styled after the Japanese Heian period, but it factors into their lyrics and overall theme as well. Absolutely fantastic band that everyone even remotely into classic and power metal should check out.
