couldn't you get a better record by doing the shortcut on lap 2? I mean, it'd be miserable having to do an entire lap between attempts, but it'd shave off a tiny bit of time
Good video, Marty actually got finally got out of bounded, it's the light above him changing the color n the front, he's regular looking from behind. 😭
Update: Abney has hit thee wall clip after 59 hours of attempts, he took the fast lap record and the 3lap record as he came in half a second faster than the tied no shortcut 3lap world record. Without Dan or MR doing attempts or a new shortcut, Abney's record will likely stand forever.
Marty was actually a normal Thwomp once. He was the first to discover driving through walls, but he was shunned and almost killed for his crimes. In fears that he could clip through swords and bullets, they injected him with Kryptonite and then was jailed for life instead since he is no longer a threat. We could have gotten Thwomps in MK64 if it wasn't for Marty's crimes to physics and the subsequent driving ban to all Thwomps. Now we just see an almost catatonic Marty in the lowest point of his life. There is no hope in his eyes or dental hygeine in his teeth.
@@Abyssoftthe way you deliver the line is half the humor...i love the 'Leslie Nelson-esque' style of remaining completely monotone/deadpan/serious, despite saying absurd/nonsensical/subverting lines, and youve got that in spades
Never realized they were any more than a visual effect as a kid, but now that I think about it, it makes sense: It's just a normal racer with its course programmed and its collision disabled. "Ghosts" in Souls games act the very same way. It's interesting that the devs didn't do anything about the Thwomp's AI to disable it going after ghost racers ― I guess either it was too difficult to fix, or maybe they just somehow didn't think of it. Or maybe they just thought it was neat
I love that the human brain gets better at something once we know it’s possible. The barrier to this skip feels like it was just one person getting it, considering it took years for 1 to complete it, then 3 different players hit the skip within such a short period of time. Goes to show that human limitation may go further than we think
I'm not usually an outspoken fan of onomatopoeia, but that goshdarn *POOMP!* has been haunting my brain since 1998 and I just can't get over it. It's perfect, no other combinations of letters could better describe the sound of a go-kart hitting the ground. Totally off-topic, but… ye ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hopefully someday, someone can capitalize on one of my old glitch findings where you can shroom into a sliding Thwomp, which propels you backward into the wall behind you if timed correctly. Unfortunately I never was able to find a way to exploit this finding into a shortcut.
We can only hope Weatherton or Forest find a use for this; although I do recall Drew telling me he looked into this and couldn't find anything, but I could be misremembering.
There is a room where you can shroom boost into the thwomps to get launched out of bounds (the room next to the bridge room before the stairs.) Unfortunately there’s nothing that came out of it because the launch distance was not sufficient for storing a select checkpoint or to abuse a checkpoint to skip a portion of that track for that matter. If that effect is possible to recreate in another room, it would be intriguing to see if it leads to anything useful.
Marty isn't locked in there as punishment, but for his safety. He's gone mad raving that the stars were going to kill him. He laughs because he knows he's safe now: after all, it's not like the carts can just drive through walls, right?
No way dude he is in there because we can unlock Marty as a playable character. All you have to do is drive Bowsers castle backwards 3 laps. I can actually confirm this is true, my uncle works at Nintendo. Source: dude trust me.
1:35(ish) - fun fact: "Marty" here isnt even Green...he's Blue, just like all the rest, but for some reason his "cell" is bathed in Green Light (you can see it on the floor tiles and walls, as well) making him look green...
Well ONLY because you specifically asked for my theory about Marty... see, a Thwomp's life can be relegated to simply falling heavily towards the ground repeatedly , mostly when there is a potential victim under it , sometimes they just practice for awhile. Well Marty got way too good for his job, mf was smashing everything in sight, until Bowser realized life isn't even fun with Marty stealing all the action and driving everyone away. So he was barred away, just outside of the game area for racers, as a constant reminder of the power that COULD BE UPON THEE if only perhaps it were released once again, thus contributing to the overall intimidation of Bowser's Castle, and image is incredibly important to Bowser, to show off the powerful slaves he controls in his evil army. Best I got bro. Fantastic vid as they all are🙌
The editing in this video was amazing. I love how you used the maps to explain the shortcuts. I'd love to see a video by you about every track in the game!
Marty's not in jail. He's a sentry. But the safety glass melts in the high heat of the lava-surrounded castle so they use the jail bars instead. He laughs at you when you approach because the races are the most interesting thing to happen to him; who goes to this castle otherwise?
Thank you for keeping update with Mario kart 64 community, this helps to understand for the people who don’t know about speed run’s and wr times as well.
Holy crap, this gets me hype. I never thought someone would ever find one in this level, but here we are. Unbelievable. I need a MArio Kart 64 adventure mode like Diddy Kong Racing. It's going to happen. One day...
13:00 - Just to fill in a gap, while it didn't count as an official WR, mrcornhead would hit the clip multiple times in 2021, including once with minimal set up that was just 4s off the world record
Played this game RELIGIOUSLY with my brother and friends. Knew all of this except the hidden wall jump. Actually had MK64 at a bar once, brother and I challenged to guys playing and bet beers on a circuit. We destroyed them and got free beers lol
I’m a bit confused: a wall’s hitbox will keep you 1 kart-length (KL) from its other side, but you’re still able to drive right next to a wall, and collide with it, far closer than a KL away. Why is that? Is the geometry of a wall just stretched out towards the track by 1 KL, with the ‘actual wall’ hidden behind it?
11:00 use three different colors for the three different hitboxes for the upper, lowerr, and upright walls. It will make more sense visually that way, instead of fading different hitboxes out.
Marty is the Whomp equivalent of The Hulk and he's stronger than Bowser, but without arms he can be trapped easily so they keep him in a room with a light that keeps him stable and reinforced floors he can't pound his way out of. He's in there because Bowser knows an uncontrollable Marty rampage would decimate his entire empire and any kingdom Bowser wishes to someday rule. Kamek may have been involved with Marty's mutation...
Huh, it's a weird trend I've noticed in speedrunning. A mental block broken when one person does a near impossible trick that opens the floodgates. Took years for one person to get it and not too long another 2 have.
"Now let's talk about walls" Me: Oh god this is going to be fucking boring :3 minutes in to wall explanation: Me: I've never cared about walls more in my life than I do right now.
I don't think it's a green Thwomp. I think the cell is mossy, as you can see the same green shade on the ground texture. It's either dim green light reflecting on Thwomp and his prison or it's moss that has grown all over his body.
Not unless a trick is found that makes it much easier. Unlike 3 out of 3 wethertenkos in which being the first to do it guranteed a world record regardless of skill level, you have to drive extremely well to get the record in addition to nailing the trick to get it. Wethertenkos save multiple minutes this saves 6 seconds
Mario Kart 64 is the best Mario Kart game of all time!. You still see tournaments run in Arcades & local Pubs all around the country. Nintendo should really do a remake of this game as Mario Kart 8 doesn't do the Mario Kart 64 classic maps any justice whatsoever
I don't think Marty is actually green. I think the lighting in the room just makes him appear as such despite him actually being blue. Either that, or he really is green and they locked him up because they're raysis.
Marty used to be regular driver, but his odd shape caused a lot of wind resistance. He just couldn’t win. Not to mention, the other drivers were clipping through walls. He saw how the other drivers would all get to celebrate together and he wanted that. Out of desperation, he started messing with wild experiments to make himself more accurate, lighter, and ultimately… faster! But it wasn’t enough. He wanted more speed and he went overboard with his experiments. No one wanted to even race him anymore, losing the few friends he had left to his obsession. To make it worse he noticed that no one ever celebrated with him. Everything was wrong. So, he decided one day he would make it right. He could go back! He could undo it all. So he began to make a cure for himself… but, it didn’t do what he thought it would. It did something else. Something that NO one saw coming… …to be continued.
I don't get the mushroom before the spiral strat. If you use it to boost off the final ramp and drive along the wall to the right of the building at the end of the lap, you can shortcut to the finish line
