Had acl surgery, six days ago. I am a 54 year old woman. Today, I am able to straighten my leg, put full weight and walk slowly around the house without crutches. I take many rests with my leg up.

It's crazy how the injury is handled differently depending where you live. I had my surgery 2 weeks ago in Switzerland. I wasn't allowed to straighten my knee for more than 20% two weeks post surgery. Now I need to use my crutches for 4 more weeks with only applying max 20kg of weight on my knee.

That is very different. I just had my ACL done and I was told to be full weight bearing without crutches by day 3 and no knee brace. By day 10 I could walk 1km in the snow without assistance of any kind.

I did the same thing. Four weeks in a knee brace locked out in extension and had to use crutches. Could only put about 30 to 40 percent weight bearing. In my 4th week I have a hinged knee brace only for going out in public and weaning off crutches. And I'm in the US.

That’s actually the right way .. your new ligament is going through a lot of biological chaos. Slow and steady rehabilitation is the best way.

Yes I agree with you it sounds as if every person is going through a different recovery process and experience! I am in my 14th day post surgery and I still cannot walk normally. The best I can do is walk with one cruch very slowly and for a very short distance (tens of meters) since yesterday. I was told to use cruches and no brace since I was discharged on day 2 and progressively bear weight as tolerated. Although I see many persons on RU-vid being able to bend ther leg to some extent (some even fully), I still cannot bend it much, maybe 10 degrees or so max. I was not told to exercise bending it either. I feel that this will delay my ability to walk. Also, I feel the swelling which has only started to settle a couple of days ago is preventing me from bending it. How are you doing now after 1 year?

I was told I could put my full weight on my operated leg 7 days after surgery. In fact, it was encouraged, so I could regain my quad strength. I still used crutches and my leg brace to help, and reduce swelling, but it felt great retraining my muscles. Case by case though, just do what the doctor/PT say.
@tchevrier
@tchevrier 5 лет назад
It does seem to vary greatly by doctor. I was told full weight by day 3. I never even had a knee brace. I used the crutches for about 5 days. Its day 12 now and I was able to do a couple of single leg squats. Not very well, but I thought that was pretty good.

Sophisticake well my doc says to wait 2 full weeks but I also had my miniscus torn, I still think that is ridiculous
@annmillikin6169
@annmillikin6169 5 лет назад
Wow - some of you recovered really fast! Frankly I am a bit jealous. I think age and where the new ACL comes from plays a big factor in the recovery duration. For example, my current recovery where my surgeon used my own hamstring tendon has been longer and slower so far than my other knee where a cadaver was used 12 years ago. I am 8.5 weeks post op and use one crutch which keeps my walking gait normal whereas without the crutch I limp probably due to quadricep weakness. I heard it's better to use one or two crutches longer if that helps you walk with better form.
@aymanalmateeg
@aymanalmateeg 4 года назад
Yeah I guess many factors affect the recovery. I am 2 weeks post surgery (ACL with hamstring graft). Although I starting bearing weight gradually from day 2, I still find it difficult to walk with 1 crutch, and impossible to walk without crutches.

I wondering that i took too lkng to recover too. I had my surgery on dec 2019, normal walk took 4 months now I'm at 9th month still i couldn't bend the whole as normal n sometimes have the pain in my knee. Lockdown holidays literally helps me to have a great rest for my surgery leg.

I’m at 2 1/2 weeks after surgery and wish I’d seen this earlier! I’m finally at the point where I can put weight on it without pain, so I’m trying to push away from crutches today!

RISHI DEVASHISH you will be all right like the video says keep your leg elevated at all times pillow under ankle/heal don’t put a pillow under your knee only. You want your leg straight into the ceiling not angled. This is to reduce the swelling and to get that straight knee extension

Here in the uk my doctors wanted me to have this operation whilst I still had 2 broken wrists. How on earth would I use the crutches? Cancelled it and decided against surgery.
@tchevrier
@tchevrier 5 лет назад
interesting. there doesn't seem to be a consensus. The instructions I was given was to try and progress to full weight bearing without crutches by day 3. By day 10 I walked 1km without any assistance, crutches, brace, tensor etc.

Had mine... Meniscus was trimmed as well... It's been a year.. And I feel way more stable pre surgery.. But I still feel tender pain.. And knee cracking from time to time.. Meh better than my knee dislocating randomly
@annmillikin6169
@annmillikin6169 5 лет назад
Ugh, sounds like my situation exactly. I only got the surgery because my knee would dislocate randomly as well and it was super painful. Do you happen to remember when you could walk normally without crutches?

I had Acl surgery about a week and 2 days ago. I only got my sutures out a few days ago. My doctor told me I could take a bath if I can get out of the tub but I don't know if I can. I will shower with a chair in the tub though if I can. I only just recently started allowing myself a little weight baring and it still brings on pain and I take 800mg of ibuprofen with over the counter tylenol 3 times a day! I still have my brace on although I took it off at the doctor's and saw my knee. The doctor said it isn't as bad as most which makes me feel better but it wants to give way every once in a while and I get muscle spasms so I am laying low until I feel more confident although I go to physical therapy next week Wednesday and I am starting cold therapy tomorrow to see if it truly does help! I have lifted my knee and bent it slightly a few times! I try to walk when possible but it does hurt and makes my ankles and knees very sore like I just exercised like crazy or something!! Geesh when will the pain just go away!! I want to bend them and feel normal!! Do I just need to bite the bullet or is being gentle for a while best? I hate pain!!

this is so weird. I had my acl and meniscus repair surgery on Dec 22 in China. The doctors made me stay on bed for three days after surgery, then allowed me to walk with two crutches. They haven't taken off my sutures yet, and I was told to use crutches for 6 weeks before normally walking. Is this some Chinese cultural thing? that I wait longer and progress at a low pace when it comes to rehabilitation
@childrenofshanghai9894
@childrenofshanghai9894 3 года назад
same here, I am in Shanghai. Had ACL + Meniscus repair at huashan hospital. I am going back today to take off the stiches... the hospital PT the day after surgery told me I could bear 50% of weight on my leg, no more. I had Artificial ligament, which seems to be very popular in China; and is supposed to recover a lot faster. But I dont find any video about it on youtube..
