That is of course apart from the Hydrogen - 1 atom, which has no nucleus, and not to mention the Hydron Ion which has no electron. God alone knows why! 🎩
Don’t be so fast to judge. Ricky makes some good points, but that doesn’t mean he disproved anything. I’m not saying I believe in the afterlife, but I’m also not saying I don’t believe in it
There's no way you can guarantee she (and the people you talk to who react similarly) missed the point and didn't understand the other viewpoint. It could just be that they disagree and feel like there's no point in arguing further since on some subjects some people are unlikely to reach common ground
I don’t think that’s what’s happening. My interpretation is that she knows there’s no rebuttal there so she gave herself an out by directing the conversation somewhere else, and he lets her. Both displayed emotional intelligence at the end.
I think Ricky just made this character, so he can adress all people that (propably) constantly questions atheism, without having to constantly come with the same responses.

@@Johnsilver813 would you say the same about the renouned scientists or philosophers? I take it that most of them weren't atheists but all of them were seekers right?
@@Johnsilver813 My dear friend, logic and science tells us to think rationally. Don't take just about anything at face value. You have to judge and look into the matter in order to get something out of it. If you have nothing in your hands, you got to start with something as meager as yourself. If you don't even believe in yourself, not one bit it's really unfortunate. But even in that scenario you have to consider that this world or this universe is not a small room. So the chance of you being an absolute loner in some scenario would always tend to zero. And Nietzsche also acknowledged that surviving is finding the truth why you suffered right? You got to find and fight before you give up. If you be a pacifist ok, a nihilistic you're still in the game. But if you become an escapist it's most unfortunate.
@@Johnsilver813 Man is a rational animal. We have brains to think. So why should we give up before meeting the end of line, before looking at the abyss? It's exactly what Richie said here. If you do good things only because you’re afraid of going to hell, then you’re a shitty person. Do you only love your parents because a book told you you’re going to hell if you do? Besides, by your logic, it wouldn’t make sense to not believe in afterlife and do what you want, everyone should do what they want for 1/4 of their life and spend the rest asking for forgiveness anyway.
I agree. I mean even as someone who does believe in heaven and hell. I don't think that was ever the point. It is about being good to people. Being a good person to everyone around you regardless of what they may do or say to you because that's how you make a better world.

About appreciating every little thing about life because you won’t be able to forever. I don’t see how these characters simply having a discussion about life could be taken as an insult to anyone.
People these days are chosing to get offended just so they can create some sort of reason to desagree and/or discuss with other people. Funny that some people that do believe in heaven or hell still go around raping and murdering as much as they want. The promise of an afterlife is meaningless in truth.
Well the main difference is that theists who go around raping and murdering are logically inconsistent while atheists who do the same thing follow the path to its logical ends, I hope u get it, well I think u do and u r just strawmanning the theistic narrative.
@Scott Scotty if you are to follow the path of atheism to its logical ends = there will be no inherent meaning in life, no good, no bad, no right no wrong, ''it's just DNA and we dance on its music" as Dawkins wrote in his book. You can believe in an afterlife and still fear death, I'm an atheist, I don't think death is the end, but I do believe it will be bigger than any change I've ever experienced and change is naturally scary, also my family will fall to pieces and I don't want that to happen. Plus the only thing we know about death is that it is one way, that is terrifying, what if the afterlife doesn't have fish fingers?
No, that's silly. You're relying on the logic argument that you can't prove a negative. I can't prove there's no afterlife. I also can't prove there are no unicorns, but believing in them just because I can't prove they don't exist is silly, just like believing in an afterlife. @@kilroy2517 Um, that's not what I'm doing and I don't believe I wrote my comment like that? Ironically in the Christain mythology, suicide isn't actually a sin, it was added later because this, you actually had the opposite happen, Christains wouldn't see a reason to live if the afterlife in heaven was just a confession and suicide away.
it was always a sin as it was taking a life- your own. A christian can still commit suicide and go to heaven but just like anyone who commits suicide you’re going to miss so much that would lay ahead of you if you stayed on earth. Suicides never the option no matter what the situation.

Even if not stated directly, one of the ten commandments is that one should not kill. If you commit suicide, then that means that the last thing you did while on earth was kill someone i.e. you, which is a sin, for which you have no time to redeem.
About two years back after I got off of work one night, I went to fill up my gas tank at an arco down the street from my house. As I was filling up my car, a young blonde lady probably in her early thirties asked if I had some spare change to help get her out of town. I looked over at her truck and saw it was filled with random things she probably took out of her house as if she was moving out. I told her after I finished filling my car up I’d fill her truck up no problem. She said thank you and we got to talking about her life and this guy she was with and how he mistreated her and she was trying to get away from him and this and that and we ended up having a real heart-to-heart conversation about life and such. She asked me if I was religious and I told her that I wasn’t and she asked if I believed in heaven and hell and all of that and I told her I didn’t. I told her that without the idea of heaven or hell being real places we go when we die, it’s really helped motivate me to be a better person for the people around me and the people I hold close and dear to my heart. It’s really changed my outlook on life and made me realize there are no redos and we don’t get any other chances - this is all there is so we need to make the most out of it. That’s why I don’t ever take anything to granted anymore and I really try and make every day count and let the people in my life know that I love them very much because any time I see them could be my last. She said I was really kind and she appreciated what I did for her. She asked for my phone number and I had given it to her and that was that. She drove off and I never talked to or saw her again. It was a really humbling experience.
@YamiYami17 objective moral truth is not necessarily linked to God tho. Just because one is able to act with certain morals in mind is not proof that God exists.
@YamiYami17 I can't. That's the point of freedom. Everyone is free to choose how they act, and while I would disagree with said persons morals, I wouldn't be able to objectively say that he is wrong. Everyone is entitled to their own choices. Either way he would be reprimanded for any of those acts since there is a basic set of morals that is accepted within the majority of societies. Really, it comes down to the fact that we follow what we were taught as children and now take it as fact, but someone could have easily been told something else at a young age causing a difference in morals. The other person is wrong in my eyes and I am wrong in his.
I like how the lady is a little bit convinced by his words. When she said she watched the movie 5 times, he states that she *didn't* waste her time and that just makes it special.
Yep, this is why I'm agnostic. Religion is kinda irrelevant to me. There's plenty of reasons to do good and avoid bad that have nothing to do with religion. But I'm not against religious ppl since any day it could turn out that they were right, or any day we might learn that atheists were right. It doesn't matter much to me though. Believe in whatever you want to believe in, it's probably just another name for humanity anyway.
@Heracles N Hmmm... Sorry if I misunderstood you, but I think I might agree. I mean, many ways in which you can find relief, either by believing in Heaven or by simply thinking that you helped someone and did the right thing. I know that saying religion is completely irrelevant is a bit of an exaggeration. My point was that I try not to dwell too much on it, since it's kind of an uncertainty, which makes me uncomfortable with putting most of my judgements on it. Again, sry if I missed your point.
i sometimes thought religions are created by humans to make a socially stable environment back then. Think about it, without the absence of religions from the start, ppl would have no fear of doing something wrong and cruel to others and themself, other than the consequences from the law. But now, i think religions are getting out of hands with their strict rules. Sure some religion are flexible and can change its rules as time goes by, but some of them.... My eyes observed that the only target now is money and power that will keep a religion going. Ppl sell their beliefs and benefit them as if they own them. It was supposed to straighten humanity, but now it is used to straighten their cashflow. Thats what i don't like about it. this is just my opinion i don't hate on other because i know that we will never know what journey awaits us at the end.
(If it matters) Coming from a catholic, Ricky could not be more right. In the end, hundreds of thousands of years from now, no ones gonna care what you believed, who you believed, what your daily routine was or what you did for a living. Life is precious. Atheist, or spiritual person, I think we can all benefit from viewing the “meaning of life” as LIFE itself rather than some ulterior purpose that has no substance of itself. If you are on the side of LIFE as an atheist I have no qualms against you. It’s the nihilists, those who deny life of its meaning in any form, that I can’t quite understand. Even then we are each on our own journey through this endless journey of LIFE and if being nihilist or an atheist is the game you want to play then go and live it, and learn the lessons that THIS life has to teach you.
Learn the lessons? For what? There's no exams later. Once you learn something everything else has changed, the same things never repeat themselves. And if they do repeat, it's like going through a triller film with all the spoilers in your head, and the movie starts to suck. It's always a choice between suffering or boredom, while perpetually chasing delusions for the sake of a memory, of momentary happiness. Okay, I don't know much of what I'm saying, but I think life is too absurd to learn anything we can try, 'cause why not what other options do we have... But inherently there's no lessons or purpose or meaning at all to any of it. In defense of nihilism, on the grounds of where everything rests.
If that’s what you want to believe...Nihilism can give solace for a time to those who either choose to not think about the deeper meaning of things or even those who have just given up the search, but in time such a philosophy only degrades the soul, trades our individual destiny for momentary pleasure and petty mundanity. LIFE is dual in its manifestation, you wouldn’t have the perception of “ nothing” if it wasn’t for the SOMETHING all around you. And even in theses intervals of “empty” space there is still SOMETHING. What that is only YOU can know and discover for yourself.
Interesting conversation. As an agnostic, I have always looked upon nihilism as a transitory state towards finding your own way to make life meaningful. Ironically, after some years of reflection I've found out that one of the most meaningful parts of life is to find meaning in life. Or all these reflections are just another stage in my midlife crisis, lol
The logical conclusion of atheism is abject nihilism though. Every single argument in favour of atheism at the present moment leads one into being forced to conclude that we live in a world that exists to no significance and which is ultimately going to end in the heat death of the universe which will condemn every facet of reality as we know it to fade into an eternity of nonexistence from which it will never re-emerge. It puts a question mark on the entire landscape of human civilisation and accomplishment as it strips us of any value as well as anything we do in life as everything we cherish and wish to preserve is all ultimately doomed to destruction at the end. I honestly think that atheists like gervais realise this and so have to construct scenes like this to try to present a perspective that shows atheism in a positive light, which in light of what following atheistic arguments down to the ground leaves you with comes off as a weak attempt to resist the undeniably depressing and borderline unliveable mindset that being an atheist leaves you with. If you’re courageous enough to try to fully embrace nihilism and not live as a living contradiction as gervais does when he says he disbelieves in free will but lives as though it exists due to not being able to face up to living as if he doesn’t
@@patrickmcardle952 That doesn't sound like nihilism or atheism. The end result of nihilsm is highlighting or exploiting flaws to end a flawed system and bring about something new. To accept that there isn't a grand creator of the universe doesn't mean you need to replace it with something else.
