I got one of the relatively new Game Boy Micro aftermarket housings and I thought I'd give the things another chance at a review in case the manufacturer had made any improvements with the newer colors. As it turns out, no, they haven't.
My original shell review (warning, old video that is rambly and has really poor lighting): • Review of the new afte...
I still don't recommend these if all you want is a fresh skin for your Micro. They are noticeably lower quality and the finish is not great. If your original skin is not salvageable, then this will work but it might be worthwhile to pound out any dents in the aluminum skin, sand out any scratches, and then just paint it instead.
If you want to get one of these, retrogamerepairshop is currently stocking them (among other vendors): retrogamerepai...

You're providing a huge service by reviewing these shells. I was very close to purchasing one. I think I'll take a different route on restoring my garage sale find. Thank you!

One of my favourite things about the micro is how well it fits together so I would hate these on mine. I bet they vary in quality a lot though, there's probably a chance that you could get one that isn't shoddy

as with all things, there are always exceptions to the rule. I'm sure that some are good but that seems exceedingly unlikely. I've yet to get my hands on a good one (but n=2 or 3) and I've yet to talk to someone who got a good one too.

So I recently bought a blue one of these. I was able to get it to fit (and I use the term loosely) decently. Took a lot of time but I figured out its all in the back piece. I had to bend and twist it to where the battery door notch lines up with that notch in the back piece and that closes the gap to where its not so hideous. Also I discovered that pre-tapping the holes in the back piece makes it way easier to screw in without striping your screws. Its by no means perfect or worth the $30-40 youll have to spend to get these, but its at least presentable.

I wish I had seen this video before I purchased one of these shells on eBay. I need to contact the seller for a refund because the shell doesn't fit together properly, the faceplate that it came with is unusable because the legs on the clip side are bent completely outward, and the second faceplate that I ordered doesn't look like what I was expecting to get, and it is a little bit too wide to properly clip on to the Micro and it already had scratches in the lens. The alignment of the screw holes was so bad that I couldn't get the screws on the top screwed in, and I had bothered with threading the captive screw properly on the battery cover only to find out that doing so only made the gap between the battery cover and the back panel even larger. The red color of the replacement shell doesn't even match the red color of my GBM's original shell, and the whole reason I ordered the replacement shell is because my GBM has a dent in the back panel, and the clear cover layer of the serial number sticker is falling off and I wanted to be able to use my GBM without worrying about the serial number rubbing off of the sticker.

It sucks that those shells are still ass. My OEM shell has stripped screw holes, all scratched, etc. I wish I could revive my shell, but it looks all banged up, and I don't even have the top screws on there because they stripped the holes.

Was there a screen protector on the inner side of the lens?
@Rodville

It was one long strip of "sticky plastic" that wrapped around both sides. My thought was that maybe the sticky was still on the plastic and just needed a good clean.

I don't understand after all these years, wouldn't it be easier to produce glass lens for gameboy micro rather than making crappy foggy ones?
@makho
@makho 3 года назад
the faceplate is curved and has latches. That sounds way too expensive for a crowd that is known for buying the cheapest (not least expensive) option possible.
@blakryptonite1
@blakryptonite1 3 года назад
@@makho I'd pay good money for a quality one. My GBM has been sitting in a box for 5 years because the lens is scratched. I've been waiting on a quality lens/housing. I'd easily pay up to $20 for a decent quality glass lens alone. Alternatively, they could just make a crappy plastic lens with a cutout for the LCD, and I could just put a screen protector over the flat LCD.

The finish under the anodize appears to be sandblasted on this "new" gold shell, Can't say for certain because I'm not seeing it in person but that is what I would guess from what I can see. The old crappy "silver" one that you had that doesn't fit at all is just a "brushed" aluminum finish. It could be a modification and still be the same factory producing a "better" version since time has passed, and depending on how they are making their blanks they should be able to adjust the hole locations to the proper places but that assumes they know what they are doing and didn't just make hundreds of flat blanks and then the tooling and just hoped they would get it right. It's really unfortunate that there still isn't a great solution for these. I don't have one but they always looked cool, I wish I had picked one up back in the day. I can remember almost getting one off craigslist in around 2012. Wish I had. The frame for these, is that plastic or aluminum?

Would it be possible to gently bend and manipulate the parts to get them to fit better, such as on the battery door? My poor micro's a bit worse for wear to a noticeable extent. slight panel gaps beats dents and gouges.

have a question with my SP and it's kinda hard to explain for me being as I'm fairly new to working on gameboys and such, but I'll try my best. so basically it works fine but sometimes the red low-power LED comes on no matter how much charge it has. If I can squeeze or fiddly with the console on the bottom right corner by the power-switch and it'll go back to green for a bit, but then eventually it goes back to red until i fiddle or squeeze some more and it'll go back to green and pretty much repeats the pattern. at first I thought the battery was just old because it was the original battery so I purchased a new battery, and it helped for a bit it seemed, but then the some issue reared it's ugly head once again, after that the only thing I could think of was to try re-flowing the solder on the power-switch so I did that and it seemed to have fixed the problem yet again, but alas... I'm still having the issue. It happens a lot less frequently, but it's still an annoyance. One time I let it be just to see if it would cause the battery to "die" or if it was just the the LED being weird, but it the gameboy does end up dying if i don't squeeze and fiddle with it until it turns green. which is kinda concerning because I hate the feeling of squeezing the shell knowing of all the tiny components I could be harming. I've looked all over and I've asked around a few places, but to no avail. Any input from anybody who may know what my issue is would be greatly appreciated!
@Rodville
@Rodville 3 года назад
edo the power switch is dirty. makho has posted a few videos where he shows how to clean it. It worked for my SP when I had a similar problem. The red light kept coming on every time I would play it. But cleaning it fixed the issue for me.

you need to actually open the switch and clean it. If you are still having this issue, either the shielding has not been reinstalled correctly or your switch needs to be replaced (or your battery terminals are dirty/corroded).
