The writer Curtis Yarvin recently posted a criticism of the conservative takeover of New College of Florida, where I serve on the board of trustees.
Yarvin, who has built a cult following on the “neoreactionary” Right and the “post-Marxist” Left, is best known for advancing the thesis that the progressive-managerial state, which he calls the Cathedral, is so powerful, that any action to challenge it will end up reinforcing its power. The better solution, Yarvin counsels, is to adopt the posture of a prey animal, find satisfaction through aesthetics, and wait for the American Caesar.
I disagree. Yarvin’s philosophy is an expression of self-fulfilling pessimism. To a certain extent, the conservative takeover of New College has already been successful. We immediately fired the former president, abolished the DEI bureaucracy, banned coercive and discriminatory “diversity” programming, and brought in former education commissioner Richard Corcoran-a man of great tenacity and courage-to lead the turnaround effort.
Furthermore, our initial campaign at New College has already had a ripple effect: multiple states, including Florida, have introduced legislation to abolish DEI bureaucracies at all public universities, and the higher education establishment has expressed fear that a conservative counter-revolution has begun. At a minimum, we have proven that the political commissars are not inevitable, not invincible, and not untouchable.

If you weren't making waves, if you didn't scare them, they would not be going so crazy. You know the truth, as I do, and as they do. We are in for a fight, but the reality is we will win when the spell is broken, when people realize they do not need to have things shoved down their throats; that there is no need to live in fear, there is no need to put our children on the block to be sexualized, the spell is broken and we won't do it.

I am a doomer far beyond Yarvin's scope, and I think Yarvin is full of crap in his defeatism. What Yarvin ultimately fails to understand is that when everything collapses, something needs to be fighting to take over the vaccum left behind. Yarvin will let every chance pass him by because he does not understand that his philosophy has no mobilizing power. Some of the smarter people I've listened to said that Marx probably knew that his solutions were unfeasible in the form he wrote them, but he knew that he had to offer a vision that would mobilize people. Being 100% correct (which he isn't, but let's pretend he is) is worthless if it leads to passivity at the time when activity is needed. The right needs people willing to rally others, else the only ones who will do it will be the left and the alt-right. If the good people on the right refuse to fight such as what Rufo is doing, then only fascists will be left to take the fight. Real fascists, not "you hurt my progressive feelings so now I will call you a fascist". Even if absolutely everything is guaranteed to go to shit, you fight. You do so because not doing so invites even worse outcomes.
@d0wns0wth

What you don't understand is that waiting for "collapse" is a cope that will leave us with a third world hellhole with 300 million immigrants from Africa/SE Asia/Latin America. When that happens, the game is over, we all lose. That's what happens when the right follows the path of least resistance instead of actually playing to win and save our country. As for "philosophy has no mobilizing power", sure, but it doesn't need to. All you need philosophy to do is attract elites, who DO HAVE mobilizing power. Read Burnham. Read Pareto. Read Machiavelli. Elite theory is correct and until the right can digest it, it will keep engaging in worthless populist strategies with no elite support.

I wanted to take 1 semester more of Computer Science courses and complete the major, however the staff informed me I'd have to complete another 2.5 years at new college to do this. There's no logical justification for that, they just wanted to waste my time and money. Education's goal should be efficiently teaching students marketable skills.

The argument that Curtis often makes is that the "Cathedral" is decentralized by way of incentive structures. People act in their own best interest because their incentive structures convince them to do so. This is what drives the left leaning effect. The solution is to root out the bad incentive structures at every level. Only then will change be a likely outcome at a large cultural scale. If you think the system is fundamentally flawed, as he does, then why would you spend your energy actively trying to patch and tape it back together? Let the walls of Jericho fall and build a better system from its ashes.

The progressive groups behind our modern culture were in the same situation in the 50's where they didn't have power, the culture was against them, all the civil institutions were against them, and the government was against them. It has bothered me that the content of text books lean far to the left. I heard some years ago textbook publishers produce content based on their largest customers: California, New York, Illinois, etc. Because of that right-leaning states have no other option but to purchase those textbooks. We've been hearing about the Parallel Economy. There are textbook publishers such as A Beka which have a more centrist-to-right lean. It might be a good idea for Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma and other red states to drop their contracts with the established publishers and explore alternatives. If nothing else, this might force those publishers to update their content in order to keep stock holders happy. On the other hand, by switching to alternate suppliers we may begin to see quality textbooks free of propaganda.

7:42 "I believe...". This argument is disingenuous. There is a third possibility. That is that something of the system is salvageable, but that "taking over" schools won't solve it. That is, just because you have gone one layer deeper by attacking at the educational level, it doesn't mean that you have gotten to the critical layer. So, assuming that you've correctly stated Yarvin's position, it doesn't follow that your "we gotta do something" is correct.

I'm no neo reactionary but I understand Yarvin's points, conservatism is not really right wing, and perhaps even more importantly to the point in my mind, it's not libertarian, if you want a return to anything close to what was rightwing in say 1890 or possibly even earlier as some neo reactionaries might want, or if you want libertarianism, a conservative take over of a college is nothing to be happy about, at best it would take that colleges left wing policies back 10 years, but this is woefully inadequate, we have decades of progressive polices that need to be undone that conservatives simply are not stepping up to the plate to do.

I typically appreciate your takes but I think you missed the mark on Yarvin. What Yarvin is saying is is that wokeness is written in the fabric of the American tradition. It is the religion of the American elite and it didn't start in 2013. 2013 is when people just happen to start noticing because noticing was too difficult to ignore. His point is that its the exact same doctrine of the Ivy's from back in the 90s, 80s, 70s, and so forth and a traceable lineage that goes back centuries in a historical tradition which conservatives refuse to break out from. The futility, he says, in your approach is that you still operate within this traditional paradigm which he views as completely divorced from the actual history of American tradition (the Left have always been the elite and little Right wing resistance has done nothing but delay the onset because the Right has no historical continuity, it merely acts as a complainer of Left wing radical movements throughout American history). So trying to get rid of wokeness is like trying to uproot the entire American tradition. I often suggest people listen to his podcast with Thaddeus Russell and Batya Ungar Sargon where he offers a compelling case that shows to actually beat this thing you need to be willing to seriously replace all of it not just some stop gap measures. And replacing all of it means a decentralized move that is also coordinated where everyone is on the same page and its a shock not something people can constantly prepare for because they have the high ground with regards to institutional power.

The concept of right wing in itself is inherently monarchical because it is derived from the French revolution with respect to the monarchic loyalists. @@MidlifeCrisisJoe I don't think that is a fair critique of Yarvin from what I heard in his conversation with Auron. Beside his critique of the New College project (which he made admitting he didn't know everything about it), he had a much more radical proposal: hand over control of ALL public schools 100% to parents, including hiring/firing decisions and curriculum. Radical decentralization.
@doh917
@doh917 Год назад
@@andyjones1982 Consider the fact that American elites (and increasingly global elites) are basically bred through the Ivy league schools (Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, etc) and that these schools are all based out of New England. The New England Puritanism is the ruling religion of the American elite and have been so since America's inception. That's the historical lineage of what people call wokeness which is just the latest iteration as you pointed out. If one were to replace all professors clothing at these institutions with frocks and started putting crosses on the walls (today its increasingly the rainbow flag) but the professors changed nothing of their rubric or lesson plan, nothing would change but it would formalize what is effectively the same doctrinal approach. When people say this or that is just like the witch trials or it is a witch trial, one never steps back and considers the implications of what that actually means. It reflects a historical continuity aka a tradition that goes as far back as prior to the declaration of independence. What Yarvin suggests or at leasts tries to provide is an ability to step out of the enlightenment framework for anyone opposed to this nonsense because trying to win in in ones opposition's frame is destined for failure or as the left says that one can't dismantle the system by using the master's tools.

Glad you pushed back, his analogies of recent are just not good and often can be framed in more accurate ways - for example, what you and the others are doing in FL are the ACTUAL acorn songs sprouting up to become the future oak. Yes his analogy works on other "conservative" issues - marginal tax rates comes to mind - but not in your case. He's very frustrating in his he applies his analogies as of recent.

If you shout a bunch of nonsense, propaganda and lies, like Rufo, but do it confidently then the most absurd things will be believed by the gullible in fear... What do you fear? Education and Diversity. Why are you people complaining about dark skin characters in movies? I thought the phrase you love to use is "judge me by character, not skin" And so, what does it matter what color skin a character has? Culture is not defined by skin color right? So why the outrage? A darker skin Tinkerbell doesn't make her "black" She could be as conservative as Candice Owens, love religion and Trump... But since you're all looking at the skin color and not the character..... See, you're all racists if you complain about "race swapping" the same Ritz boys complaining about how "people should get to play whatever they want" Unless you're black, then you can't play a viking northerner as if only white people can be born in the north in viking culture? No, they were also mixed.. Get over it, diversity and mixing is good... Proof? The Military. conservative's abusive boyfriend, used as mercenaries to deal death and destruction, remember that famous football guy who joined military after 9/11? what they did to him is horrible...But what happened to that hero will happen to anyone who speaks out against the systems, systems which you and rufo are fighting to keep in place. Good job loser
