This is the best video I have ever seen on agapanthus! Thankyou! I just replanted 25 of these from one giant overgrown bush, rhizomes and all. Wish I'd seen this first cuz, I planted them with some very long roots, instead of shortening them down. I may go back & cut down some of the long green leaves to strengthen the roots first. Hi, Amazing 25 plants, good for you. Yes, cut some of the long leaves but don't uproot the plants. The long roots will produce babies on the rhizomes so best not to disturb it this season.

This is a really interesting video. I am looking for some exotic plants for my garden in the UK and these beautiful plants could be just what I looking for. However, on doing some quick research, I have discovered that hardiness could be a problem but I could probably work around that by choosing a suitable location and by protecting the plants during the winter. I also read that they could be poisonous to animals, but you have a sweet little dog in your garden so presumably it is not a significant problem.
Hi Catherine, Happy you discovered the agapanthus. At the moment it is agapanthus season in Kenya. Gardens have a burst of blue colour, its beautiful. By the way, I don't have a problem with my dogs, so go ahead and get some agapanthus. When I was in the UK this September I noticed that you have so many different shades of blue, which we don't have in Kenya. What I would recommend is when purchasing the agapanthus do ask at the garden center the overwinter requirement for that particular agapanthus variety. Some varieties are hardy, whilst others you would be required to dig them up and store them indoors. Good luck and Happy gardening.
I loved your video. I have several agapanthus and I have never cut the stems before. They are a year old. Now I am looking at them and the stems are on the ground and don't stand up. They flower on the ground as well. The stems look like they have old leafy parts and the stem is long and has several pods. I live in Florida USA and summer will start after memorial day. Should I cut the stems at the root? One plant has several long stems with several pods on them. I am surprised they live around my non green thumb. Help. 😞
Hi, the agapanthus is sun loving and requires 6-8 hours of sun each day. It will flower only if it is in full sun. Once it flowers the plant will go into seed production. If you want to get more blooms its best to remove the spent flower, which will end up as seeds that green pods. Once the flower is spent, cut the stem down to about 4 inches. I would advice to cut the flower stem if it has gone into seed production and make sure your agapanthus is in full sun.
Great video. Probably less important where you are but im wondering does this need to be done in Spring or when? Im in Ireland so obviously the seasons matter more.
Hi Greetings from Kenya. I would suggest to do your division during the time you start the over winter preparation for the agapanthus. As you dig up your agapanthus for storage you could divide the rhizomes and pot them. Store them and once spring arrives you start to gradually introduce them out side. The other alternative is doing your division in Spring as this is the start of the growing season.
Hi Alice…I just planted 4 more agapanthus , they all flowered beautifully and now are dying. I wasn’t sure if I should cut the stem. So after listening to your video, which was very informative, I want to make sure I understand. So you should cut the stem and it will continue to seed??? hi Rose yes after the flower the plant will produce seeds. You can actually see the pods once the flowers falls. Remove the stem as you dont want the energy to be directed into seed production. The plant will continue to flower.
Hi Alice. I have been looking for some informations about Agapanthus. Here in Germany we keep them in pots and in cold rooms during the winter and leave them in the Garden about April. My plants are doing very well, bur their flowershoots are growing too high. They ar not strong enought in windy weather. So I want to ask you, if i could feed them in a special way. Hi Andrea, thanks for asking. Remember the the Agapanthus loves full sun. If your flower shoots are growing too high it could be that you have them in a shady area. Too much shade will result that the stem becomes too weak and extended. During the growing season do feed the plant with a fertilizer slightly higher on phosophorus than nitrogen... its best to see whats in the market in Germany. Also remember to cut down all the spent flowers to encourage new shoot. Let me know your progress
Hi once the flower is spent remove the stem. One can not propagate the stem. If you leave the stem on the plant the plant energy will force the plant to go into seed production. So best to remove the stem so plant can produce more blooms.
Hi Hope you can help. Have a bed full of agapanthus in my garden for about 4 years now. They have grown and flowered well every year. It is now 16 May - they came up well but suddenly the leaves are turning a yellow/brown. This happened last year too but not as bad. I gave them a sprinkling of chicken manure about a week ago. I am in Ireland and temperatures have been low enough for this time of year. Plenty of rain as usual. Don't know the exact ph of the soil but it would be akaline. Would love to hear what you recommend. Ursula
Hi Ursula sorry about your agapanthus. I have been thinking about it. There are many reasons why your leaves are turning yellow. As its raining and you have low temperatures I dont think it because of the sun. 1. As you mentioned it could be the PH of the soil. If you could get a soil testing kit and once you know the Ph level, consult your nearest garden center and find out what you could use to stabilise the ph level and find out if you have a deficiency of iron or sulphur in the soil. 2.Check your plant for bugs. There are bugs that disrupt the flow of moisture throughout the plant turning them yellow. 3.I think its best to pull out one plant examine the plant for bugs i.e gnats that lay its eggs in the soil and eventually get to the plant. Check especially the crown. As with my current episode on "Saving my Clivia" I actually had no clue what was killing my plant only to discover I had the Amaryillis caterpillar devouring my plant. I hope this has been useful. As like myself we learn as we go along. Good luck and keep me posted. I would be interested to know the cause of the problem

Can't see any bugs - didn't pull up any plant yet - hoping I don't have to. will do the soil test. Do you know what is the preferred PH for agapanthus? We had a few very heavy rain showers in the days before the leaves started turning brown. also they turned brown very quickly. I am beginning to think it may be the rain. The fleshy roots are very near the soil surface - some even protruding from soil. So, I mulched each plant with very well rotted farmyard manure. I think they have improved a bit. Will leave for a few days and see. I will let you know. Thanks again.

Sometimes it can be a calcium issue because calcium assists in the uptake/absorption of Iron. (If I remember correctly??) I hope your plant is ok. These Agapanthus are so beautiful!
Hi Alice, my gardener just planted several Agapanthus in our back yard just 4-5 months ago ( in May). They were in all day full sun and really healthy when first planted. Now all of them are not as healthy as before. Some have the dying leaves . Some just disappeared. (Leaves are all gone) we are in Florida and got a lot of rain this period of time. I’m not sure if it’s the cycle of the plant or too much rain water. Need your advice, please. Also , does agapanthus flowering year round?
Hi sorry for that. In the northern hemisphere the agapanthus will be active from spring till fall. Then is starts to go into its dormant stage. With the deciduous agapanthus the leaves turn yellow and die off, where as the evergreen( has fleshier leaves) they keep their leaves. I suspect that you may have the deciduous agapanthus as the leaves are dying. Ask your garden center to confirm. But all is not lost as the rhizome under the soil and it is still alive. You can store it over winter and the beautiful agapanthus will spring back into action in spring. Check out my episode this evening on" Storing agapanthus over winter". I hope I was helpful.
Hi David, the best time to separate your agapathus would be in spring as the new shoots are emerging. Another time would be in autumn, after the plant has stopped flowering and it starts to loose its foliage. During this time , as you divide, you can start your overwinter preparation to store your roots.
Hi i believe they could grow in Singapore, in good drainage soil and at least 6 hours of sun. Here in Kenya we have temperatures of 27-30 degrees C in summer and they grow well. In palaces like New Orleans they seem to grow well with the humidity. Also contact your local garden center for more information.
Living in Southern CA....the agapanthus is abundant. However, I find that the leaves burn from the many hours of direct sun, no sun dappling, in zone 9. I get great blooms but those beautiful green leaves are burnt to a crisp! Transplant to dappled sun area?
What i would suggest is cut off or even trim the burnt leaves , as the beauty of the agapanthus is the contrast between the lush green leaves and the blue/ white flowers. I would then move them to an area that has less bright light.
Should you not wait for a few days for the rhizone to harden off with the root, because that is bear flesh, by putting it directly into compost is surely not correct.
Sorry for the late response. After division you could leave the agapanthus to harden or repot the agapanthus and withhold watering the repotted agapanthus for a few days. I normally just go ahead and divide and never had a problem. Will add in the description about hardening the divided agapanthus.
I live in california, where the humidity is low and I have a couple of good size plants, can I go ahead and trim them back after they are done flowering? Should I wait until winter? And how far back can I trim them?
Agapanthus love full sun and as long as you have warm weather they will flourish. In order to get new blooms cut back the spent flower so that the plant gives more energy into making more blooms. If the leaves are turning brown just nip those leaves but not the entire foliage. Some agapanthus will retain its foliage during winter while others,the foliage will fall to the ground, I would suggest you leave the foliage even during winter as the leaves provide great compost and during spring the plant will revive again

yes remove the stalk with the spent (dead) flower. This will encourage the plant to produce more flowers. If you leave the spent flower on the plant, the plant will stop producing blooms and concentrate on producing seeds.
Hi Peggy sorry for the late response. I have been travelling. If your agapanthus plant has no pest such as spider mites or a fungal infection it could mean that it is going through the natural process of preparing its self for winter. As the temperatures drops in fall, the leaves will will turn yellow and eventually die back and pick up again in spring. If you do have them in a container it could help to try moving it to a sunny location.
Sorry for that. Though agapanthus are sun lovers, the leaves could turn yellow and droop if the leaves get scorched. In this case I would reposition the plant. Secondly, it could be a result of overwatering or the soil is compact and therefore a drainage problem. Check the leaves and see if your plant has a problem with pests, such as meal-bugs and spider-mites as these tend to suck the sap from the leaves and eventually kill the plant. If this is the problem go with a sample of the leaf to your local nursery and ask for assistance. Let me know how it goes.

Yes you can. Three years ago I visited Kerela and where I stayed they had agapanthus in their gardens. It needs full sun and well drained soil. Keep me posted
