Aggressive (defensive) ball pythons, a few tips and tricks!

Here we share how we change the behavior of ball pythons that want to strike, and how we pick them up. The behavior seems aggressive, but really is all defensive. We simply change what defensive behavior they do by covering the head.

Mannnn I got my Mojave a week and a half ago and I’m a young teen (14). This is my first time having a snake and I’ve got a family friend who helps me if I come to face problems with her. She’s never attacked and all she ever does is move around the vivarium and when I take her out she’ll just try to get up to my neck where she likes to hang
@Tyclone
@Tyclone 5 лет назад
Mine is pretty mean as well. For whatever reason he hates the sound of my voice. I can hold him and as long as I dont say anything he will just hang in my hand. If I say anything though he will turn and look at me. If I say something again after hes turned to me he strikes.

A little tip I've learned with my new baby bp (who is horribly defensive) is to mist them. Very lightly, don't spray them right in the face but gently mist them. They will coil up and allow you to do whatever you need to do, whether it's picking them up or doing something in their enclosure. It won't hurt them, it just bothers them. Some snakes really don't mind but I've found with most ball pythons they really do not like water.

I've seen a lot of videos on people's pet snakes being extremely defensive and sorta aggressive towards their owners or just anyone in general, and these people have had these snakes as their pets since they had hatched or since birth as newborn baby snakes. And I just dont understand how snakes who have been with one owner their entire lives can be so angry and strike at everyone all the time. How does a snake just be born angry and stay angry and aggressive their whole lives when they've never been in the wild or have only been with one owner their whole life? It just doesnt seem to make much sense to me how that happens. Like, when you get a puppy and hold it and give it attention its whole life, they dont just grow up to be angry and violent dogs. I dont see how that same thing csnt work with snakes lol
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 4 года назад
Snakes vs puppies, totally different. But handling can cause them to settle down.
@susiethebest1328

It's because snakes don't necessarily recognise that you aren't a threat unlike a puppy who learns who you are and realises you won't hurt it

My friend used to have an overly defensive ball python. He calmed down after a few socializations where I held him in a hoodie. He would bite the hoodie instead of me and get really jerky when I touched him. He got better when grabbed from underneath instead of overhead. He was just anxious. Once he realized we wouldnt hurt him when we picked him up, he started to chill out and got a whole less headshy

Hello! I have a question about strange ball python behavior (well, my ball python's behavior). I've had this boy for a while now, maybe 4 months, and he's never done anything like this before. He's been refusing food, burrowing under his substrate, moving all his hides back and sitting behind them, even getting up on his basking spot. He's usually not very active and prefers to sit in his rock but he's never been very active in previous months. One of my friends told me he might be having a mating season fit or something of the sort but I'm not too sure. It started around the middle of March, maybe it's been going on this whole month but it's been about a month since he last ate. Any advice or knowledge? Any and all help is veeeeery appreciated ^-^
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 6 лет назад
It could be just growth, hormonal, seasonal type thing. It could also be that he is due for a good environment cleaning. I would dump/change substrate then go from there.

10/10 would not recommend doing on a ball python with a very strong feeding response. Bless her heart my 4 foot pastel ball decided that my hand was a rat when I did this, nailed me on my middle and ring finger, and didn't let go for 20 minutes (coiled and everything). She's usually not aggressive at all so I don't blame her, but it was just bad timing and she was apparently in a mood as it was the beginning of breeding season and she was extra hungry.

I've been thinking about getting a baby ball python, how do I determine their temperament before choosing one because I assume that any snake being handled by a stranger will not be as relaxed as with someone they know. My family are not snake people and I know if they see me get bitten by a snake they'll panic. I just want a ball python because they seem so relaxed and they're beautiful. So lovable too.

Kristen H Hi, if you get one from a decent shop they will normally be relatively honest about the snakes temperament before you buy and you can always ask to handle the snake in the shop, this will generally give you a good idea of its temperament , Hope this helps as they are great pets 😊

Kristen H usually it just takes easy handling to calm them down.

Kristen H I am new to being a ball python owner, let me tell you, I absolutely LOVE my snake. They are real easy to take care of.
@whileyouwerereadingmynamei8801
Kristen H I have heard about baby ball pythons to not be the best for beginners, since its hard to feed them. Maybe get one thats a little bit older, but not full grown?

WhileyouwerereadingmynameIstoleyoursandwich I don't think a baby is a bad choice at all, as long as the breeder gets them started well first. juvenile it adult is an excellent choice as well, but many people want to watch the animal for it's whole life.

so is it bad to feed your snake in the same tank it lives in?.....because won't it get thinking that when the tank opens that its food time and strike?
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 6 лет назад
Justin Smith nope, that is an old wives tale. Feeding in the home won't cause aggression, and causes less stress.

Is there a reason why my ball python never tried to bite me or strike At me in anyway?... I could basically do whatever I wanted to her even put her in my pocket without her getting defensive or scared. Is this normal? I believe she is a super pastel clown?

CONGRATULATIONS!!! HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY ! ! ! and I got to be with you! It's so fun to see and hear your enthusiasm, you guys! By the way - did you know that when a human baby is getting fidgety the same "cover the eyes" trick works with them the same way it does with ball pythons. After birthday #1 humans learn to avoid your hand or blanket or whatever and then it has the opposite effect. Perhaps that's why your bigger snakes don't buy the trick - they've figured out as they got older. SO. . . use it while you can - with kids and with snakes!!! Again: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY GUYS!

I had 2 baby ball pythons, 1 pinstripe and a mojave, both were slightly jumpy at 1st and then after a week of constant holding by me and my girls they both chilled out and actually enjoyed us stroking their head and underneath the jaw.
