In all the styles we teach it is common practice to bring the lead foot back to the rear one, or make a full pass back to protect the leg and lower openings. Some sabre manuals encourage the leg being brought back to touch the rear when parrying anyway, as with a combination of moving the lower targets back and protecting the higher targets with hanging parries you cover most bases and give a very safe defence, allowing for a strong lunge in riposte, you will see me doing this a lot here. A number of times here I have used full passing steps back, which is not so common in British military sabre, but comes naturally to me as a rapier instructor. Sometimes when an opponent is bearing down on you quickly or with sustained attacks it is a great way to move quickly and with stability.
