AI has really taken the world by storm over the last year or so, and now developers are actively using it for everything from script writing, to art, and code generation.
The problem is... this is not good at all for the creativity and artfulness of games. At all. That's what we discuss in this month's podcast!

I think all of this AI stuff can be a great tool for artists. No doubt some will over-rely on it, but I'm certain that the really good stuff will always be artist driven. I've never seen AI-art surprise me. I think it's impossible for it to be a trendsetter and so I'm not really worried about it taking over. I'm actually quite eager to see what smaller developers and artists can now create because of AI-aided programming/testing or generated landscapes and yes, also generated npc's. As long as there is a human core to it, I think all of this is quite exciting. PS: For example, in the recent UE5 Demo they showed off a generated jungle. I thought it was wholly unimpressive. It looked great, but also incredibly boring. But if you put that generated jungle around a designed spot of interest, say, an Indiana Jones like Tomb or something, the generated landscape can aid the the actual level you traverse.

I agree that it can be a useful tool, as long as it stops at being a tool. For example - Photoshop is a useful tool, but actually working with Photoshop requires a human creativity. If we get to the point where human involvement is "print game," then we're in trouble... and sadly that's where certain players in this industry want to take things. It's always the problem with techbros and Silicon Valley. They take a good idea and turn it dystopian, because someone at the top of the company with the idea is the very caricature of an evil capitalist.

@@DigitallyDownloaded I agree. But I believe that this will only speed up an inevitable fatigue of these "fast-food-entertainment-products", and give rise to true originality again. I tend to think we'll see a real renaissance of the arts because of this accelerated stagnation.

All people can do is aggregate existing information. That's what language is. When we are little we listen to how our parents and everyone speaks, then we copy them. When someone makes a new game or book or something, they get influences from all the other games and books that they have read and experienced before. Silent hill 2 is an aggregation of influences from Jacob's Ladder, Crime and Punishment, the paintings of Francis Bacon, ect. It's not like the creators of that game thought up everything themselves. Everything they thought up was just an aggregation of all the other works of art that they have experienced. This is partly Devil's Advocate. I don't have strong opinions on the matter yet.

This is a good point, and you are right! I guess the difference is that the way humans aggregate information is more organic, whereas the way an AI does it is mechanical. It's a small difference, perhaps, but while you could ask an AI to write a story in the style of Shakespeare, you would never get Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is dead, which takes Shakespeare and is both inspired by it and subverts it. I guess that's the difference I see. Perhaps one day AI will become actively creative and be able to be inspired by works as we are. I hope not, though. That would be the end of humanity (for real).
