Ai vist lo lop (or “ I saw the wolf ” in French) is a traditional song in the Occitan language created around the 13th century .
History
In the form of a three -beat melody , this tune with its lyrics has been transmitted since at least the 14th century and is now part of the traditional musical repertoire common 1 to the entire Massif Central since the beginning of the 19th century at least 2. In its 2-beat form it was mainly transmitted in Occitan-speaking areas as a children's nursery rhyme 3.
Some sources believe the wolf, the fox and the hare (or weasel) in this song represented the King (Nobles & Lords), the Merchants (bourgeoises) and Church (Clergymen) all authorities who raised taxes, overcharged prices, scammed and exploited the serfdom leaving nothing for the peasants.… (The Tree and Sprouting Bush).
