No franchise is not going to see what their non-bust rookie can do before putting in a QB whose ceiling is known to be low. Minshew costs a lot, AOC will only if he proves himself to be better. The notion that Minshew would be the starter is a media invention. It's also due to the Mahomes/ Stroud effect. It's hard to look at Stroud's rookie season & lament AOC's or see Mahomes in your own division & not be dissatisfied. But there's only one Mahomes & you don't have him. You have to play the cards you're dealt. People haven't realized yet how transformed this team is. If you can't fill out the roster, than individual impact players can change games. Wilkins & Crosby were dangerous enough on their own. Imagine what they're gonna do to the increasingly slower Mahomes. Bowers allows them to work out of two-TE sets freeing up both TEs _and_ Davante. If they could win games last year *without* those improvements, if nothing else, expect a lot of highlight reel plays & more excitement.
What else would they say..”he’s not working on his mobility” I’m sorry but you can’t teach mobility, either you have mobility or you don’t, he doesn’t instinctually know how to get out of pressure and that puts a lot of pressure on our O Line to keep blocks for 4-5 seconds because he just doesn’t move and extend plays and that will kill our deep game, he’s a 5-8 yard underneath passer which explains the good completion percentage. He didn’t take the starting position from Jimmy G, they did the exact same thing with Jimmy that they did with Carr, sat him to avoid him getting hurt again and possibly guaranteeing him 25 million. I’ll be surprised if AOC beats Minshew for the starting spot, he’s gonna be a serviceable backup no doubt but he’s just not ready to lead a team and take over a game if need be…maybe I’m wrong and he’s a totally different QB now but what’s the chance of that being the truth, he was the same QB last season that he was at Purdue and that wasn’t that great which is why he was drafted where he was. I’ll ask the same question that I’ve asked before…what starting QB in the league could AOC take that spot from right now, if we can’t answer that than why would we settle for him as our starter? I’ll support whoever is taking our snaps no matter who it is, I’m just not sold on AOC….YET.
I think AOC will not only be the starting QB, but I think we will see in INSANE leap in ability in year two. So, let's break down last year a bit more. In the 10 games AOC started, there was massive growth. The first Chargers game was his "welcome to the NFL" moment. And even after taking 7 sacks and trying to adjust to the speed of the game, he was never rattled, and the Raiders still almost won that game. Now, McScrewup and his staff are shown the door, AP takes over, and you start to see the growth. Was it perfect, no, but did he grow, yes. He finished 5-5 as a 4th round rookie! Who was not supposed to see the field at all. Thus year, he will have reps with the starters. He knows he'll have a chance to start. He's battling for that job. And he will win it because he can make throws I haven't seen Minshew make yet. This kid was dropping dimes in last year. There are 4 second year players and one rookie player who will have a HUGE impact for the Raiders because they will have a full off-season, and McScrewup is no longer there. 1 AOC, He is already in better shape and taking this seriously. His ability to stay calm under pressure as a rookie is better than most. 2 Tyree Wilson, He was coming off a foot injury that made him miss most of the off-season workouts and training camp. And was not put in a position to succeed due to the close-mindedness of the old HC. This year, he is healthy and has been working with Maxx all off-season. Now has Wilkins to help and Koonce. 3 Michael Mayer. This guy will make AOC right. He will AOC right. He will be healthy as well and have a full off-season to learn and grow. 4 Trey Tucker This kid will learn from Michael Gallup and will take his game to the next level. Unless Tucker is injured, he will battle for that slot spot. 5 The Rookie Brock Bowers is going to be the weapon of all weapons. Putting him in the H-back position with Adams Meyers, Mayers, and/or Tucker is a match-up nightmare! AOC has the quick processing ability to dissect a defense, go through his progressions, and hit the correct target. Minshew may be a better running and scrambler, but AOC's pocket awareness is much better than Minshew's. These 5 players will have a huge impact on the Raiders season. AOC will lead that charge because the main man, The HNC, AP wants his players to be themselves so they can thrive! And the Raiders will rep Al Davis and indeed, Just WIN Baby!!
Aidan o connell was projected to be a first round quarterback in 2021 he went back he draft stock has fallen. In my opinion he has a chance to be special
O'connell deserves a shot to develop. He will be better than at least 3 of the qbs taken in rd1 this year's draft. Maybe more. Will he eventually be a top 10 guy in the league, who knows (prob not). But you can say that about anyone who hasn't done it. Give him a full year and let's see how things look then.
I've been a Raiders fan for 40+ years and will die a fan. I think we are going to surprise a lot of people this coming season. Every team talks smack about us but we were the last team to beat the queefs 😂 if other mfs would have done their job the queefs wouldn't keep going to the SB!
💯 % Trust AP's Starting QB Decision when that time comes. It's a Good problem to have when all 4 QBs on roster are capable of executing our Offense. Never know when injuries will haunt next man gotta Handle!
First off, I concur wholeheartedly with your assessment of AOC and what he's capable of doing and will continue to do. You don't have to be a franchise quarterback to win in the NFL. The right ingredients are for any quarterback, which is a formidable offensive line across the board. To have a strong, accurate arm AOC already has weapons at his disposal. He is the quarterback to lead the Raiders going forward into the playoffs.
I agree with AP about Aiden, give the man a real chance. He deserves that like any QB dose. There are a lot of QBs who have been said to be an elite QB and are not around any more. Even Tom Brady, was a backup and picked later in the draft. So experts are not always right. So don't judge Aiden this year.
I think running with AOC is the best scenario for us. Build a power house around him now while he’s cheap and if he doesn’t work out you will have a team ready to win and we can be in a better position to go out and get the QB we need. I believe this kid can play and I like his decision making, I like he takes the sack then throw it into tight windows.
I wanted us to get JD badly, but something tells me AOC might be special. Him changing to #12, getting that #4 off his back tells me the kid is grow and may be the surprise of the league.
This is where many teams go wrong with young QBs. They don't build around them. Or put young team together, where experience is needed. There is no competition, Aidan is the starter.
Facts, but I think people fail to realize that he was the 2nd best rookie QB despite the challenges and asinine number, Hondo Carpenter Sports ILL said before this years draft that anonymous GMS told him knowing what they know now he would be the third or fourth QB taken this year but definitely a first rounder, they said he’s a proven QB with no bust factor and unknown ceiling…..
Ya know AP has a knack for getting the most out of his QBs AOC I BELIEVE WILL THRIVE FROM THE QB COMPETITION AND TAKE US SOMEWHERE WE HAVENT BEEN THIS YEAR. PLAYOFFS
For all the haters wannabes. Swallow glass for saying AOC is not a franchise qb there are qbs that never came from the first round draft and landed up being very good if not better. AOC is our franchise qb
I don't know what the hell yall talking about, Gardner Minshew is obviously the superior QB who can carry this team to a division title... said no one, ever. Aiden is our QB1 and quite possibly our franchise guy, he reminds me of a young Derek Carr before his career got wasted and ruined. Kid has moxy and a lot of potential
You do know that minshew led the ncaa in passing the last time he had more than one reciever, and was the pac 12 player of the year. minshew also hits the deep balls he just has not had anyone that could get deep. also you are talking young aoc he has no real experience and is 2 years younger then minshew. I would play minshew if he does not do well early then put in oconnel but i will put money that the raiders make the playoffs with minshew. with oconnel i see way to many qb's look good for a year and then the second year defenses change and they do nothing. it will be very interesting to see how the season turns out.
This is smart. Fill in the holes, make the overall team better. Put the QB in the best position to win. And don't count on a rookie QB to take you to the promise land.
He can absolutely be a franchise QB, a Super Bowl winning QB, and even a H of F QB.......look at how many other QBs in the past looked so bad there rookie season, and even there second yr didn't look the part ....Troy Aikman comes to mind, 1-15 rookie season, threw a ton of picks, he was a pocket passer with the speed of a sloth, rarely ever ran. Used the run game to set up the pass, threw to his fav target TE and dump offs to RB Emmitt Smith a ton...he threw to the outside with Irvine and the other WR, but much more often to the safer, higher percentage short to medium middle with TEs and short quick dump offs to Emmitt. Aiden O played better than all other rookie QBs last year not named CJ Stroud. He played better, looked better and kept improving, learning from his mistakes more than just a few of QBs of the past that went on to be great QBs.....Its ignorant and shows very little knowledge of the history evolving NFL QBs to say that AO is avg at best or put any limitations on what he could be, history of NFL QBs scream that fact. Theres way more reasons to be optimistic about his ability and his long term future with the Raiders than to be pessimistic and limit his abilities and future. Simple history, stats and numbers more than prove that. But I kno that won't stop the ignorant and no real knowledge mouth pieces that chime in with goofy comments that do nothing but show that they are just that. REAL RAIDER FANS have, let's say, J Plunkett for just an example of what can be. I mentioned QBs like Aikman and Plunkett not because there's not more to further my point, but to show and compare there ability to scramble and run to AOs abilit, AOs is gauranteed better. He'll show and prove that early on this up coming season, he's better and sneaky'r at that than anyone thinks, he'll surprise, just watch. Real Fans Ride or Die, not look for reasons to bitch and be pessimistic. If your not Ride or Die, move on, there's no room in the nation for ya......NEXT
My son noticed that AOCs number in college was 16, he was given no.4 from that s$$t head Josh, what is 16-4? AOCs greatest accomplishment 16-4 = 12 AOCs new number.
Why arent you saying he can be a 4th round franchise QB? Tom Brady was the 199th pick of the 6th round. Pudy was Mr Irrelevant. Meaning ANYONE CAN BE A FRANCHISE QB. Why not AOC. He's smart enough to change his Number to 12. THAT in it's self deserves a lil respect!! 👉🔥☠️🔥👈
All you Carr lovers say if only? Might as well give him an all pro team with all those if only smh it was if he only had a defense he had a good one in NO still playing mediorce smh bro
I don’t think it’s AOC, I honestly think it’s Anthony Brown Jr. Think about it, we wanted to draft a QB in the first round and they actually had talks with Michael Penix Jr and Jayden Daniels. Which QB do we have that has a similar skillset to Jayden Daniels and Michael Penix Jr? Anthony Brown Jr. plus ABJ already ran a similar offense with the Ravens. ABJ QB1
AOC is ok but he is a statue you cant compete in the NFL today with a QB that has no mobility Gardner Minshew will give Radiers a better chance to win experience plus mobility he can move the chains with his legs lets go Radiers
I don't have a problem with them having faith in Aiden Oconnell, but they should have better back up plan than Minshew. You have veteran guys on that roster that are hungry to win now, and they deserve better. Especially when you had guys like Flacco and Tannehill that you could grabbed for cheap.
Minshew's not special but he's not bad. Plus he's a mobile QB. He made the probowl last year and was like 13th-15th overall. That's not bad for a backup. It could be alot worse.
Minshew almost got the colts to the playoffs with a worst roster believe brother we gonna have a top 10 defense and beefed up the online and got him another te for 12 man personnel which Minshew lead the league in last year%wise... bro we making the wildcard B E T
Aidan knows what Raider Nation Wants from our QB and he's been dedicated to improving his weaknesses. Hell he's donning #12 🐍 he knows What Time it Is!! 🏴☠️☠️💀⚔️🩸🩸🩸🔥🍂W1ND MuFux!!
Yah. Woo hoo. Let's get excited for the Patriots drafted fourth round QB... We'll just pretend like we didn't pay Gardner Wayyyyy more then a backup gets paid. 🤦 At this point we're watching after our ex girlfriends dog. We tried to trade for Jayden. They weren't moving off the pic. Same with Pennix. So we tried to get TWO QBs in the draft and over paid Gardner and y'all r gonna sit here and pretend like we WANTED to roll with Aiden 🤣 yahhh. Y'all can eat that cake all you want....just know that's not cake....that frosting covered dog SHyt 🎤 💧
