Liberating the Natural Breath is an online breathing journey and community created specifically to help people experiencing Air Hunger (or Chronic Breathing Tension, Hyperventilation, Chronic Yawning and Sighing) find their way toward easeful, natural breathing. Created by a psychotherapist who found his way through Air Hunger earlier in his life and a breathing-specialized Alexander Technique teacher, Liberating the Natural Breath is an innovative, thorough, and holistic approach that is founded upon long-established bodies of work. We are committed to providing a path forward for people with non-medical Air Hunger, helping them to rediscover that their body and their system do know how to breathe and can reestablish their inherent, easeful breathing if given the right support.
All course info and public resources available at: www.liberatingbreath.com
New video: • Help for Air Hunger, w...
This video explores natural breathing and the Alexander Technique. These principles may be helpful for understanding non-medical symptoms such as chronic breathing tension and non-medical air hunger, dyspnea, sighing, yawning, feelings of struggling for air and breathlessness, shortness of breath, gasping for air, reaching for air, muscle tension, hyperventilation, belly-breathing, chest-breathing, feeling like you can't breathe or can't get a full breath, can't get a full breath in your lungs, or feeling like you're having a panic attack. This video is not intended to address medical issues in any way. Rather, it is an educational video about the Alexander Technique; our capacities for awareness, choice, and habit; and how we can learn to recognize the ways we unintentionally interfere with the natural movement of our breath. This video and the course are both offered by Emergent Inquiry, LLC.
This is an educational video about how the Alexander Technique and self-awareness can be used to reduce habits of interference in the body’s natural ease and coordination. Neither this video nor the associated self-paced course are intended to address medical conditions or mental health conditions. This video and any associated services are for informational purposes only and are not a substitute for professional medical or mental health advice, examination, diagnosis, or treatment.
Emergent Inquiry, LLC recommends that you consult your physician regarding the applicability of any information to your individual situation and seek one-to-one guidance from a certified Alexander Technique teacher if you decide to pursue the application of Alexander Technique principles to your own physical or mental habits.

Thank you so much for sharing this insight. My first experience was during the Covid19 lockdown. After that, it went away for a couple of years. It came back during the Christmas holiday last year, I was alone and I thought that I was going to die. I tried to call everyone and told them about it. I had a really chest pain and back pain, I couldn't get enough air. I tried to calm myself down and slept through the night. When I got up in the morning, I felt like nothing had happened. Time that I feel not getting enough air. 1. Alone 2. Thinking about death 3. Have conscious of my breathing 4. Thinking about my childhood 5. Worry about the future Time that I don't feel it. 1. Working 2. Busy 3. Focusing on doing things 4. Happy time

guys i have this at the moment and what helps significantly is consciously slowing down my breathing and having extreme prejudice against trying to go for the deep breaths as yor body doesn't actually need them(in my case) and it only starts when i am aware of my breathing, but once i slow down and focus and relax it helps a lot.

My Air Hunger Journey: First of all, let me tell you about my background, I’m 31 years old healthy male, living in Germany, never drink never smoked, physically active, no family records regarding any cardiac/respiratory condition. Late January 2022 I started having the first symptoms, difficult breathing while exercising, that feeling of forcing your neck and chest muscles to reach a satisfying breath, normal breathing looked like wasn’t enough, I immediately thought it was some sort of cough or flu, after taking several “off the shelf” medicine for weeks I noticed I was getting worse. A month later I had my first Panic Attack, Saturday morning, right after I started a cardio workout ( that I have being doing every day for the last 5 years ) I had a very hard time trying to reach my breath I felt that I was dying and went straight to the emergency room, after a few hours I felt better and initial exams showed that I was completely fine. After that day, I took a long rest, no exercises, just doing the regular work, during this period I switched jobs for a full remote role. I felt great, for months all symptoms were gone I haven’t had a single issue, slowly getting back to the gym feeling a 100%. I thought the problem was gone but late December 2022 I started having the same symptoms again, and I’m having trouble ever since . I started paying close attention to every symptom and after weeks of research I finally realized I’m suffering with Air Hunger, Pseudo-Dyspnea, False Shortness of Breath, Unconscious Respiratory Disorder, or whatever you wanna call it. Some evidences that made me realized what I have: * The main symptom is difficult breathing, usually triggered by any simple physical activity like staircases, or weight training. Sometimes it comes when i’m fully at rest like watching Netflix or browsing through the internet on my phone. * another symptom is the feeling that I’m stuck with a burp on my throat and I’m constantly trying to get it out * In the last 3 months I went to different 2 doctors to rule out any medical condition, after over 10 exams including cardiac, respiratory, allergies, asthma, etc…., on paper, I am a 100% healthy. Not a single medical evidence that could point to the issue. * No trauma or recent accident happened, apart from this issue I’m really happy with my life, It is very unlikely I’m suffering from any kind of anxiety. * If I get interested or really focused on something, looks like all symptoms are gone (when I play video games or while I work on something that need 100% of my attention) but as soon as I do something that reminds me I have to breathe the problem comes back. * No problems sleeping, no other physical issues. * I have tried every kind of Breathing Exercise, Yoga and Stretching technique, some of them gives me a quick relief but no solution. * It all started after my Pfizer covid Jab. LOOKS LIKE IT IS ALL IN MY HEAD I don’t want to control my breathing, we are designed to have this process being done automatically and unconsciously. Looks like my body is signaling to my head that I’m not getting enough air, but I am, I know I’m good but this feeling of not getting enough oxygen is always there. I really want to fell normal again, any help is appreciated.

Mine has been coming and going for many many years. Yawning feels sooooo good when you finally get that cleansing breath. It's like 50 short breaths, and then one big cleansing breath. Then the cycle begins again. Now that I know the cycle I don't let it get me very anxious. But sometimes I do need to take a Xanax when it's hard to relax. Mine does get worse when I'm gassy, constipated, bloated, etc. so I'm trying to work on my dietary intake.

Mine isnt too severe. I'll only feel the need to take a deep breath when I'm overthinking my breathing. And even then, the need to take a deep breath isnt overwhelming. Started about 2 weeks ago, off and on. It doesnt occur when I'm working out or laying down and relaxing. This is how i knew that this wasnt a medical issue. Its definitely mental. It happens enough for it to be a slight annoyance, but no so much to where i start to panic. Thank you for the video. It all makes sense now.

I've never experienced any of anxieties before dealing with this irritating breathlessness. It feels like not enough air to inhale especially breathing in with nose. I have to inhale with my mouth deeply opening my chest. Sometimes , it turned to yawning. At first, I thought it must be heart disorder. But when I met with many specialists, they resulted me the same words like there is no anything wrong with my heart. When I heard about my results, I was relieved for a moment but still didn't fix it. Generally, I am a carefree and a happy person or easy going type. Once I got this, my mood and my motivation turned down. It's so sad and tired to explained my situation to my relatives about my case, they said 'it must be anxiety', 'just realx'. My anxiety doesn't make breathlessness. Breathlessness makes me paranoid. Please Simon!, that thing driving me crazy for really.

Another thing that can happen with the chest tightness is globus sensation (knot in throat feeling) from anxiety and this constricts everything even more so it feels like you’re choking and can’t breathe. You will start coughing a lot and clearing your throat and guess what: that constricts and irritates the airways even more!

It started to happen with me when I was 9 year old. I thought I had asthma or other respiratory disorder. I even felt something was wrong with my heart or lungs. I had appointments with 2 different doctors but at that time I couldn't explain the exact experience I was going through. They didn't understand and thought I might have mucus around my respiratory passage that's causing me breathing issues but it wasn't the cause. I remained like that for the rest of my life. I'm 11 years later, I still have this problem but it comes and goes. Today I somehow got to see a youtube short and was searching related to that and eventually found out what exactly the problem is. My mom too has the same condition. Thankfully I found this video.

@@MariiChi ummmm it's a little complicated to explain but I'll try my best. So it started at 9 with this constant uncomfortable feeling in my chest that I just had to "yawn" out. And in a few minutes it would reappear. Every time. Every darn time. That was really mentally exhausting, and the intimidating nature of this feeling kept giving me more anxiety, which led to WORSE and more intense "air hungers". Sometimes it was so bad that I legit just wanted to die. Then I noticed that my "uncomfortable feelings" ebbed and flowed with a predictability. It would ease up when: - I wasn't thinking about the feelings. - I was fully distracted by smth else that made me happy. - I meditated. - I BELIEVED that the feelings had a limit, despite how I currently felt in the present moment. It got more intense, on the other hand, when I was angsting/intensely frightened of it. After feeling the worst of those feelings and still coming out on the other side, it's no longer as intimidating. And BECAUSE it's not longer intimidating, I don't suffer nearly as much anymore. @@dappidy3763 It gets worse for me when it get close to bed time. It may be because I am afraid to go to bed because I have had nights where the inability to complete a yawn kept me up all night. @@karaokehammick5215 OMG ...everything you just described... > "It may be because I am afraid to go to bed because I have had nights where the inability to complete a yawn kept me up all night. " That described me and my fears SO WELL (including the fear of going to bed at night) that it's legit creepy. I remember in my early days, crying in bed, wondering if there was any other living soul who was experiencing the same thing as I was. One of my homeopaths said that this was actually common. So the realization that I'm not alone made things a little better. But yes, I understand you: that part at night is SUCH a big. Only different is, my attacks were never so bad that I couldn't fall asleep. I always did, despite my fears that I couldn't. Even during my worst episodes, the exhaustion in my body would take over, and I'd feel more calm. Yeah, now that the yawning feelings have (largely) reduced, it's not so bad, and I have a couple of small coping mechanisms. Plus, being inundated with other worries (like getting a stable job) keeps me from thinking about the yawning all the time. + I'm not alone :')

I had this issue for about 13 years but I am so happy it's 80% gone away just within a month by doing what am doing. All it was trigger points in muscle Serratus Anterior for me. SA muscle are wrapped around the ribs and responsible for respiration and if their trigger points there it wont let the ribs to expand to breath. After attempting to do myofascial release it's mind boggling how much of change there is in a such short time. I'd definitely recommend people doing this my life has changed now. It's incredible.

This started up for me five days ago, and so many things resonate with how myself and it looks like others commenting are feeling, especially the reaching for air through the chest and into the throat and the fear of this lasting forever. I have had general anxiety since I was in middle school, but I’ve never had these symptoms before. I tell my husband this can’t be from anxiety or stress if it’s a new symptom and not how I experience stress, but would you say that may not actually be true? Thanks for your help since this is such a specific problem. I was so relieved to see these videos and can’t wait to watch them all.

Thank you for your comment, and I'm glad to hear this information is helpful. The kind of breathing pattern discussed in the videos can develop from a number of different sources, including anxiety. So it's always possible that tension and breathing disruption can continue accumulating over time-due to stress and anxiety-until this pattern is triggered. It's also possible that something else comes along and triggers the disruption on top of the existing stress and anxiety. In such situations, it can be important to tend to not just the anxiety/stress but also the disrupted breathing as you find your way back to balance. I can't write too much on RU-vid, but I hope that helps a little for now!

Yes! After 6 weeks of feeling like I was breathing in wet concrete, my doctors put me on an antidepressant and Xanax. The Xanax helped in the short term but after a week the antidepressants took effect and I no longer needed the Xanax. So the conclusion was that my breathing problems were due to severe anxiety. I would have never in a million years guessed that, bc consciously I was 100 percent fine. I experienced NO mental symptoms of being anxious and was actually really content with life. But anxiety symptoms can occur seemingly out of nowhere for any number of reasons, including past trauma, coping mechanisms that have worked in the past but now no longer do, or even the isolation of the pandemic ( which never consciously bothered me, but your brain still picks up on the fact that you're alone and will sound the alarm). You may not even know that you have had past trauma or low level anxiety throughout your life bc you're so used to it, it feels normal. Anyway, I hope that helps, I would definitely see my doctor if I were u if the symptoms persist, and ask about getting on meds. Also if you get on meds u should also see a therapist to find out what's behind the anxiety! Good luck!

This morning I was feeling good and went out for my walk and almost immediately the air hunger started up again and hasn’t stopped even now 2 hours after returning from my 2.3 mile walk. Ugh. I was at Dr early last week for low blood oxygen and air hunger, ct scan clear, d-diner high, and of course blood gases off from over breathing. As i got better my body gained mass and my lungs didnt feel so squeezed and that made me breath a little better. Looks like it has something to do with not eating. Dispnea illness says some stomache acid goes to your lungs and they get a little inflimmation so its hard to breath. In mexico i buy ambroxol/Clenbuterol and it relieves the swollen throat and lungs and my breathing gets better but if i eat enough it usually goes way by itself. Also some multi vitamins can help because this is also a cause of lack of iron and its obvious that the body is lacking it because of skipping meals.

A little known fact: if you get "air hunger" or "shortness of breath" after every meal, it can be a digestive problem - inflammatory reaction after meals. Your digestive tract may not be functioning properly due to infections: H. Pylori is the most probable in the upper digestive tract. Just saying that not every air hunger is due to a problem in the breathing, lungs, or anxiety.

Then I thought my symptoms were the results of anxiety. So, I stopped all types of breathing exercises that were making the situation worse. Then it improved. Some days ago I learned from another youtube video the real reason for this. It was due to an increase in the sensitivity of carbon dioxide build-up. The Remedy is to tolerate the discomfort of air hunger and not try to breathe more. Surprisingly, It helped. Now I am 90% cured. I am still improving. 😊

Yes, I know it can feel like a delicate situation when you're caught in those breathing patterns. I'm glad you found these videos. For some people, understanding the information outlined in these three free videos can be enough to help you make good progress toward your natural breathing. For others, it takes more attention than that, and the full 15-module course would be a good idea. @@brunomarsrightman One thing that can sometimes happen is that, when we focus on our breathing, we end up interfering more with the natural rhythm of the breath. But if one's breathing is already in a state of disruption, then some attention is typically required to restore natural breathing, so it's not surprising that our attention ends up being drawn to our breathing because we can tell that something is off...

I've watched up until the halfway point, and from what you're describing I think I've had a very mild form of this for a while now, but only within the past couple of days has it become something more potent and certain new symptoms have sprung up. Biggest example is a tingling sensation in my extremities (feet and legs, especially), and a kind of brain fog that starts in the morning and persists into the afternoon. This is in addition to the general feeling of "not having enough air" or not being able to take a full breath. Could these (the tingling, brainfog) be potential symptoms of Air Hunger? I know it's hard to say anything with certainty without knowing my individual situation, but just wanted to get your thoughts if others that you've encountered have had similar symptoms. Overall, my particular case is not so bad and is "manageable" for day to day living, but I do like this idea of moving towards more complete and richer breathing so I'm wondering if your videos/course would help regardless of whether I have Air Hunger or just poor breathing habits built up over the years which are only now starting to make themselves known. Thanks for the videos, Simon.
@simonspire
@simonspire 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for your interest. There's not a lot more we can say than what's already in the videos, FAQs page, and course description (see links at the bottom of this comment), and we can't say a lot about individual cases on RU-vid. However, we do recommend discussing the symptoms you're describing (tingling, etc.) with a doctor. It's possible they could be related to breathing difficulties, but we don't have a lot of experience with those specific symptoms. The "general feeling of not having enough air" is definitely one of the experiences the course is designed to address, assuming it's from breathing disruption/interference rather than medical issues. The answer to your final question-is our course designed to help with poor breathing habits built up over the years-is yes, that's very much within the scope of what it's designed for. Hope that clarifies things a little. Actually, come to think of it, we have seen these kinds of symptoms before when there's accumulated deep tension along the back and spine. Anxiety and other psychological factors can certainly play a role in causing or perpetuating breathing tension. Each person's situation is different. So if there is anxiety or another issue present, it's important to tend to it. But even if that's the case, the breathing issues also typically need to be directly attended to, as well, or else they usually persist once established-regardless of whether anxiety is present or not. Sorry to hear about what you're dealing with. You're correct that our offerings are designed only for non-medical air hunger, and we are not able to discuss medical issues or or questions. One consideration that may be relevant is that addressing any additional chronic breathing tension (e.g., muscular tension/interference) that could be further exacerbating the symptoms caused by medical issues can still sometimes be possible and beneficial. the problem is there are rooms and parts in lungs closed and no any air pases there for hours maybe days, you normally breath but ait go only regular parts and never there. that non-circulation parts there are too co2 and o2 needed but threre is no o2 so you feel constant o2 need all the time even if your blood o2 level 98 Solution is progressive yawing. its little complicated technique but i simply explain it this steps first do dont take or give any breath for 30-40 seconds then say yourself you gonna breath in, but in real dont have any breath just show you intention last it for couple seconds then body will start yawing attitude now then have some milimetrix air, not real amount just have air to show your body that you get something from outside, even 1 molecule, and give that one have it, and give it that very small amount of air again and again at this time you are somewhat yawing position, maybe not really yawing but likely, at least ready to yawn anytime at somepoint your sytem will think like "i see there is no space in lungs so we not able to take more air, lets open other spaces that closed for a time" and system will open other closed spaces in your lungs and you yawn exremmly aggressive, even there will some water drops in your eyes and you are less breath hunger now people who have chronic breath hunger has many parts their lungs closed, you need work on that but dont work too agressive because it might hurt your neck since your spinal is ruled by neck and it gives all orders to your bodys, dont make focus on it too much is couses it hurts and its extremmly terrrible illnes when your neck hurts since you can not realy make it rest, you are use it 7/24 do it couple times in a day in different times,
