Liberating the Natural Breath is an online breathing journey and community created specifically to help people experiencing Air Hunger (or Chronic Breathing Tension, Hyperventilation, Chronic Yawning and Sighing) find their way toward easeful, natural breathing. Created by a psychotherapist who found his way through Air Hunger earlier in his life and a breathing-specialized Alexander Technique teacher, Liberating the Natural Breath is an innovative, thorough, and holistic approach that is founded upon long-established bodies of work. We are committed to providing a path forward for people with non-medical Air Hunger, helping them to rediscover that their body and their system do know how to breathe and can reestablish their inherent, easeful breathing if given the right support.

New video: • Help for Air Hunger, w...
Rilke excerpt translated by Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows.
This video explores natural breathing and the Alexander Technique. These principles may be helpful for understanding non-medical symptoms such as chronic breathing tension and non-medical air hunger, dyspnea, sighing, yawning, feelings of struggling for air and breathlessness, shortness of breath, gasping for air, reaching for air, muscle tension, hyperventilation, belly-breathing, chest-breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, feeling like you can't breathe or can't get a full breath, can't get a full breath in your lungs, or feeling like you're having a panic attack. This video is not intended to address medical issues in any way. Rather, it is an educational video about the Alexander Technique; our capacities for awareness, choice, and habit; and how we can learn to recognize the ways we unintentionally interfere with the natural movement of our breath. This video and the course are both offered by Emergent Inquiry, LLC.
This is an educational video about how the Alexander Technique and self-awareness can be used to reduce habits of interference in the body’s natural ease and coordination. Neither this video nor the associated self-paced course are intended to address medical conditions or mental health conditions. This video and any associated services are for informational purposes only and are not a substitute for professional medical or mental health advice, examination, diagnosis, or treatment.
Emergent Inquiry, LLC recommends that you consult your physician regarding the applicability of any information to your individual situation and seek one-to-one guidance from a certified Alexander Technique teacher if you decide to pursue the application of Alexander Technique principles to your own physical or mental habits.

Hi Simon, I was a heavy lsd user until I had my first ever panic attack while mid trip. I had negative thoughts which triggered anxiety which then triggered panic. All I could think about was my breathing. I’ve had anxiety for years. Never used pharmaceutical intervention nor any therapy. But I also never had these type of breathing issues. Following the panic attack ensued weeks of overbreathing, due to a constant state of anxiety and the feeling of breathlessness. All of the overthinking about my breathing really put me into despair, as well as the constant intervention I applied with breathing practices. After realizing I was overbreathing I corrected and started to feel much better. But still aware of my breathing at almost all times of the day. It feels so great to hear your story, and be able to relate. Especially with the problem of implementing breathing practices that seemingly only made it worse.Thank you for taking the time to create this content. You are helping people, including me, return our breathing to its natural state. My quality of life has gotten much better, and I hope everyone reading this realizes they can and will feel better soon. Dev(:

Deven, thank you so much for sharing your story here and for your kind and encouraging words. It means a lot to hear stories such as yours, and I appreciate that you're sharing your experience not only with me but with others who will read it and know that they're not alone in their struggles and that it's possible to improve and then to keep finding their way toward easier breathing. Sharing our stories with one another is one of the most helpful things we can do; thank you for doing so here. Many people I've heard from others over the years experienced what felt like a sudden onset of air hunger or breathing difficulties during and subsequent to a panic attack. I've also heard from a few for whom this coincided with an intense experience on LSD or another substance or medicine. I'm glad you've been finding improvement and that you're staying with the process. Thanks again for sharing here!

I find that mindfulness exercises help a lot. Focus on your surroundings: the sounds, sights, feelings, everything except your breathing, and then your breathing will happen naturally. This is why we have the tendency to feel better in the morning, because we're not consciously aware of our breathing while we sleep.

I have this since I can remember, I would always yawn to feel relief and only a few years ago I noticed I have this air hunger and yawning became even more current. It feels like my trachea is closed and the air stops at one point and when I exhale it comes out again so I begin raise my neck like reaching for more air and I have to yawn, it's a relief that way but it's so frustrating. I do notice I stop breathing at times too and/or very very short little breaths. I thought I wouldn't find anything to relate too and this was great information. Thank you

I'm going to go purchase your course! I'd had minor issues for at least 45 years (I'm 63), off and on - I failed at Lamaze breathing classes (35 years ago) when I was pregnant because the second I was told how to breathe (or it was discussed), I immediately couldn't / can't catch my breath - it's almost instantaneous. Other than not being able to do the Lamaze breathing when giving birth back then, I went through the last 35 years with relatively no issues - just moments here and there if the word breathing was said - or I thought about it. Now, however, it's become quite problematic - and much more of a habit - and it peppers my day, every day - it's almost like clockwork with things I do and my when I think about it - it magically appears. And of course, the more it happens, the more anxiety it produces - it's quite a catch-22!! Wish me luck! :)

Hi Simon, thank you so much for these videos, had no idea this was such a common issue! Just wondering what you think about the Wim Hof breathing method, if it would help or just interfere?
@simonspire
@simonspire 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment! In our experience, we've seen breathing exercises such as these complicate the process of restoring easeful breathing for people with air hunger. In the LNB course, for example, we recommend avoiding these kinds of breathing exercises until natural breathing becomes more accessible. This is not at all a criticism of the Wim Hof Method-it seems there are many people (without air hunger) who find it beneficial. But the kind of significantly disrupted breathing pattern discussed in these Liberating the Natural Breath videos is quite a specific situation, and it requires unwinding the significant interference and tension that has developed. In our experience, methods such as Wim Hof's aren't designed to do that and can make the process more difficult. There's also a similar FAQ answered at www.liberatingbreath.com

I’m glad I found your channel. I am going to try your course. I have noticed when I am extremely focused on something, I don’t feel the breathless feeling at all. I am able to satisfy it with a forced breath inhale or yawn. I have stopped exercising cardio because of this issue and also bad air quality seems to affect it. Are you able to do cardiovascular exercise? Hiking is such a big part of my life and I wanna fix this issue so I can run/hike again. My issue originally began in 2013 after I cut some pressure treated lumber at my job working at Lowe’s. I remember going into a panic attack after and since then, felt like I couldn’t get a deep satisfying breath. After a year of going to doctors, I decided it was best I stop thinking about it and then it kind of just got better. It was still there but it would mainly happen during exercise. Then about a year ago, something seemed to trigger it again and it’s been bad since then. And again I’ve been seeing every doctor I can possibly think of. I am also about 80 lbs heavier than I was in 2013, when it started. It’s basically every couple of seconds or sometimes every few minutes, I get I sensation that I need to take a deep breath. Sometimes I can satisfy and sometimes I can’t. And then when I do get tension, it’s usually in my throat or sternum area

Thanks for your comment, Tahir, and I'm so glad you're joining the course. We're in the process of making some significant updates to the course, so please be sure to refer especially to the QuickStart Guide for now. You'll see some changes in the next couple of weeks. Regarding exercise, yes, as we restore our breathing, cardiovascular exercise once again becomes available to us without issue and without triggering breathing difficulties. It can be a process, though, and we discuss some considerations around exercise in Module 8. This is a topic that happened to come up in our live Office Hours yesterday, so if you're able to join in the future, we can always discuss it further there. If you like, you could also create a post in our LNB Community Forum (link is in the Getting Started section of the course) to hear what others have to say about their experience. Good luck with getting started, and hope to see you soon!

@@simonspire Oh that's awesome! I am actually on a forum on the Mayo Clinic Connect portal, where people post and discuss rare issues and there is a huge thread of people struggling with some kinds of breathing issues. A lot of these people do end up getting diagnosed with Vocal Cord Dysfunction or GERD or something. but for me, I haven't had a single definitive diagnoses yet. but the original poster has a very similar issue to mine, and he recommended the Bueytko breathing method, which I will admit, has helped just a little bit. It's a good technique to implement when when I am stressed and it helps a little bit but never solves the issue. So yeah I am looking forward to it and I will attend the zoom meeting as well! I am so happy I found you! I am not jumping to any conclusions yet that this will for sure help me, but I am exhausting all avenues. Hey Simon, thank you for making these videos. I've had Panic Disorder for 18 years since I was 10, (I'm 28 now), and got shortness of breath intermittently in the last few years. However the last 2 weeks, I've had it constantly, along with serious stress and anxiety over it. I've been to the ER 3 times, 2 chest xrays, 3 blood tests, 1 CT scan all coming back negative for anything. My question is, could lifting weights/using weight machines have caused a muscle to constrict causing issues like this? You discussed tensions in your previous video, and it got me thinking. This really got bad for me in the middle of the week after I had lifted some weights, and I did use a Seated Row machine and lifted pretty heavy, so I'm wondering if a back muscle is tense enough to restrict flow. I know anxiety is the real root cause at play here, but part of me feels like there is some kind of physical restriction at play. Thoughts? Thanks for making this video man. I've had hundreds of panic attacks before IRL, but I would trade the shortness of breath for a panic attack ANY DAY. THANK YOU!
@simonspire
@simonspire Год назад
Hi Will, thanks for the feedback and glad to hear you’re finding the videos helpful. We try not to get into details or Q&A on RU-vid, but what I can say generally is that strenuous exercise or weight-lifting can certainly act as a catalyst for chronic breathing tension, especially if the individual already has existing tension/interference in their body and/or breathing that then gets exacerbated by the exercise-or if the exercise itself causes the individual to disrupt their breathing during it. From there, the spiral can continue until it becomes chronic breathing tension. It’s also quite common for people who develop chronic breathing tension to already have had underlying tension in their breathing for years, perhaps without really noticing it, and when it reaches a certain tipping point it becomes air hunger. So in this sense something strenuous like weight-lifting could be what pushes the pattern past that tipping point. We tend to see that restoring easeful breathing requires tending to both the habitual physical habits and tension at the same time as working with the underlying causes, and often the two can be quite related. You might find more relevant info on the FAQs page or course homepage - www.simonspire.com/breathing-faqs and www.simonspire.com/breathing - and I’ll be adding further resources in the coming weeks and months. Hope that helps for now!

Can you provide it for free
@simonspire
@simonspire 2 года назад
I understand how from a quick glance it might seem like it could all just be offered for free. That was actually the original idea, but we soon realized it wouldn’t work. The way we’ve designed these resources is that some material is available for free: The original essay has been freely available for 10 years and is still freely available at www.liberatingbreath.com, along with three lengthy videos (and possibly more in the future). There is no fee for any of those. For some people, that may be enough. But for many people, getting through air hunger requires committing to a process, hence the larger course, which is priced at about the cost of a single Alexander Technique lesson. The course content isn’t conducive to free access or simply checking it out in the hope of a quick solution; it’s structured as a course for those who are ready to be in the process of restoring their breathing. We feel the most responsible way for us to share this guidance is within an appropriate container (the larger course, which includes both self-paced and facilitated elements) where it is not liable to being misunderstood or taken out of context. Our intention is for the Liberating the Natural Breath course and community to be a reliable and sustainable destination that people can turn to when they’re struggling with air hunger-a place where they can find the resources and support they need to get through air hunger. The 15-module course itself required hundreds of hours to create over a period of many months after years of preliminary work, and it requires significant ongoing time and attention for facilitation and continuous improvement. Not many people can realistically afford to devote those kinds of resources to creating and sustaining such an endeavor without having to charge some kind of fee, and many courses of this scope charge much higher fees. If people want to take the course and can't afford it, we encourage them to apply for a scholarship (see the FAQs at www.liberatingbreath.com). The paid course isn’t there as a money-maker; it exists so that there is a solid, monitored, continuously updated, facilitated, and sustainable offering for those who need it. It’s for people who want the support of an intentional structure and process. We've decided this is the best way we can support those struggling with air hunger-by offering the overarching understandings in the free materials, and by offering tools and a more in-depth process for those who feel drawn to committing to such a process. I hope this helps explain why the free resources and paid course are structured the way they are, as well as the purpose of each.

@@ujjwalsharma4392 Thanks for sharing more about your situation. Hi Renee, if you're interested, you can read about pricing decisions and how the course is run or apply for a scholarship at www.simonspire.com/breathing-faqs We try to make whatever we can available free of charge, such as the understandings in these videos, with more videos and blog posts to come soon. Some people find improvement from the free resources alone, but the reality is that most people require being in a process to get through air hunger, which is what the full 15-module course and our monthly calls are for; the way the course is structured and run is not conducive to an hours-long RU-vid video series.
