I was very excited to fly with my sisters on this flight. We just took a tour flight around downtown Atlanta. Since I built my plane, I hadn't taken my sisters flying, so this was a good one.
I hope I didn't scare too much. The main event on our flight though was dealing with a very annoyed Air traffic control. Things got quite busy and he was just short with everyone. When I made my first call to get flight following he said, and I quote "I don't have time for you right now" But when another pilot called in he pretty much told him off as well because the pilot decided the instruction given would jeopardize his safety.
Anyway hope you enjoy this entertaining flight.

I have been a cfi and designated pilot examiner, the passenger chatter should be kept to a minimum in relatively busy airspace. That may account for the missed clearance from atc.

That other pilot talking to ATC gave us a perfect example of the pilot in command acting with the authority should be. The safety of his plane is his jurisdiction, not ATC’s. He felt unsafe to reduce altitude further, so he firmly stated his intentions, and that’s that.

“Atlanta Departure, Experimental 661MG, off of LZU, at 2,000’, requesting VFR flight following.” May have helped you get flight following. ATC looks for correctness, understandability, situational awareness and speed. You said 5000’ for bottom of Class B. It’s 6,000 and then 7,000’ in the direction you departed. Tell your passengers before takeoff, no talking unless it’s an emergency during climb and descent. If they continue to talk, then press the mute button.

I was happy to be handed off to Chattanooga Approach.

Flight following is not a guarantee - you must be able to navigate yourself in VFR if necessary. Curious is this was around fun and sun or some other high GA flight situation - that's a TON more GA traffic than most controllers handle otherwise, and plenty of folks asking for flight following. During things like Sun and Fun certain ATC sectors might do a NOTAM perhaps noting flight following for everyone is unlikely.

After re listening sounds like the controller had an aircraft at 2400 and the guy on freq at 3400 descending. Idk if the controller was in communication with the guy at 2400 but the controller would be correct that they only need to be 500ft vertically separated if at least 1 aircraft is VFR and both altitudes are verified. He could have just explained that the altitude was verified and 500ft separation is approved. I'm sure the pilot would have accepted this and even if he didn't it sounded like him leveling at 3400 didn't really affect that much and he got his visual approach soon after.
@LokiDWolf
@LokiDWolf Год назад
Wait, when did ATC clear you though? I get people commenting about chatter. But, unless this was edited, you mentioned your position and intentions before takeoff. Yet everyone seems to be ignoring that part. Why? Directly after that he said he cleared you and didn't get the acknowledgement. He never gave it! So, not sure why people are skipping over that to simply focus on your talking. Which again, I understand that and for the most part agree. But, it wasn't as if you were in a life threatening situation. You were waiting for clearance. You heard your number and shut up. I don't know if rude is the right word. But, not telling you something and claiming he did is a strange thing to overlook. As you're climbing you told your sisters to keep things sterile until you're at cruising altitude. Ok, what was wrong with that? People are mentioning how rough it is to be ATC. I highly doubt any respectable pilot thinks otherwise. But, at the same time, it being a rough is part of the job! Like almost every job can be. Still, there is a sense of tact no matter what. I get being direct. I'm direct. But, I'm not going to pick small fights with you or claim I did something when I didn't as ATC. Peoples lives are in your control! Pilots, from what I've seen, can be VERY empathetic towards ATC. Pilots can be some of the biggest most rude idiots too. But, stop making is seem like ATC are saints and get to act however way they want because they can have a large workload. There are videos here on the RU-vids that show ATC can be some big f*ck ups and have endangered people and even gotten people killed! And that's not because someone asked for a flight follow! In other words, it can go both ways. Everyone should be as respectable as possible. With the sober view of it can be rough for ALL involved. But, neither is better than the other. NEITHER.

If you’re going to call someone out for being rude to 300,000 subscribers then give the man a chance to respond. I fly out of a busy class delta and each controller has their own personality from very friendly to very rude but they’re all trying to keep you safe and I’ve even heard the very friendly controllers be rude with folks when their workload gets too heavy. Again, tons of respect for you and your successful channel and business, I just think the controller needs some grace on this one.

More than just harsh. With you he was abrupt and most people would perceive him as rude, but it was not dangerous. With the aircraft that said he could not descend anymore because he'd be within 500 ft of another aircraft and get an RA, the ATC's response was not just rude but suggested that the controller had put that plane into a dangerous situation in which it may be impossible to avoid an RA and not only that but that he did not care. Maybe the pilot was misrepresenting the situation, but even so, what ATC said was completely inappropriate so I am going to be on the pilot's side on this one.

Good video well done. I have to say I don't like trying to oppose pilots and controllers like that. Was he super pleasant? No. Harsh? No, just super busy. You on the other hand have some room for improvement (we all do and it's easy to judge others from a distance, like it was easy for you to judge this guy). First, be on top of comms with ATC. You had no good reason not to respond to ground. FF is a bonus, don't cry if you don't get it. Don't wait until you are in the air to talk about a sterile cockpit (they don't even know what it means). If things get out of control, your priority is the comms with ATC, not with the passengers. Use the isolate function of your intercom.

“I don’t have time” is a valid response to a request for VFR flight following, especially around busy Bravos. Frequently center controller are working two or more sectors at the same time, each on different frequencies. So you’re only hearing part of his workload. When a controller accepts your request for Flight Following, he is accepting responsibility for the safety of your plane in VFR conditions. COVID, retirements, & the very long training pipeline, & low pay has put a lot of pressure on the system. Frankly, not everything is about You. Get over yourself.

The PIC takes responsibility for their own safety, in VMC, not ATC. Only while in IMC, does ATC have to step up their diligence. Otherwise, maintaining visual separation is the pilot’s responsibility while in VMC-whether on flight following or not.

@@caseybarry5624 yeah, but watch what happens when someone on FF gets t-boned without warning from atc. If there were no controller “workload” involved with FF, then why does it exist?

@@rickkennerly2379 If someone gets t-boned while on FF or not while in VMC, the NTSB will include pilot error (failure to maintain visual separation…) in their report. FF takes a backseat to other priority handling-even though it can be beneficial. FF exists in order to help provide traffic advisories, but in no way relinquishes the ultimate responsibility from the PIC in VMC. Responsibility only is shared by the PIC and ATC while in IMC.

@@caseybarry5624 technically & legally, perhaps. But the controller will be crucified in social media, regardless. Just look at the outpouring of bile here in front of 250k subs, for merely (if curtly) declining FF.

@@rickkennerly2379 The uneducated and misinformed on social media or anywhere else still cannot change the facts-no matter how hard they try. I’d rather have a controller decline FF because of other priorities knowing that as PIC I’m ultimately responsible to see and avoid than to wrongly think that somehow ATC is responsible while simply providing advisory services to VFR traffic in VMC.

Is flight following seen as a noob thing? with computerized ATC there would never be capacity issues.

Never missed one paycheck? Remember government shutdown? Worked full time without getting paid for more than three. Know your facts before you start spewing garbage. Not every govt employee is a bloodsucking politician or dirtbag. I can say an infinite amount of things about private sector workers too, but it's not worth my time
