AIRAID Modular Intake Tube: Is It Worth It? Test and Review

This review is not an sponsored video, I paid for the product
I bought and installed an AIRAID modular intake tube for my 5.3 L83 Gen V 5 LT Engine Chevrolet Silverado a few days ago, because I didn't like the looks of the stock intake, but wanted to keep my stock airbox and filter since I use the truck in dusty environments like desert running and such
This is the same MIT for L86 6.2 trucks
I did not feel any performance difference in HP or Torque after test testing it and using it for a few days, I did not see any difference in gas mileage, but im not surprised about it, because Im already running LongTube Headers and a Tune.
Im sure that going for a full Cold Air Intake would improve performance a bit more.
The Engine bay looks much better tho
The part number used is 200-985 www.airaid.com/search/product...

Good review and most of the time its better to get a tune after installing an intake, if there is more air coming into the engine. Just an option to consider.
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 2 года назад
I dont think there is enough extra air coming into the engine to require another tune tho, the ECU easily can trim fuel in different elevations
@rubbermaidable
@rubbermaidable Год назад
It doesn't matter how much air is coming into the engine, it gets metered by the throttle body and mass air flow sensor, ecu will adjust for it.
@ritotron5752
@ritotron5752 Год назад
All you need to do is disconnect and reconnect the battery. ECU handles everything else
@AimingWanderously

W/o changing the air filter there will be no more air coming in. This just helps make it a more laminar (smooth) flow post-filter.

Honestly, I don’t like those K & N “cold air” intakes. I don’t think they even give you any horsepower. If they do it’ll be very minimal all they do is suck in hot air from inside the hot engine bay. The OEM intake box is the way to go along with a smooth intake tube like “Air Raid”. I got an Air Raid intake tube for my Hummer H2 and I’m keeping the original airbox from the factory because it sucks in cold air or ambient air from the outside.

On the inner finder well where the stock airbox gets its air from you can cut the baffle out and increase airflow also.

Yes it can be done. But, if you are going to go to all that trouble just buy an air flow box from K&N or one of those guys. Just use the AirRaid tube and keep the stock air filter box intake. In the long run you will be glad you did.

I haven’t heard of the Moroso evacuation system you mentioned. Can you elaborate brother? I’ve been debating the catch can route but I knew there had to be a better way, just haven’t seen it until now! My truck is at 35k and I’m about to do LT headers I think this would be a nice addition
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 4 года назад
Trey I'm planning to make a video on it. It's a Venturi that goes in the exhaust and causes a vacuum, you run your PCV to it so the exhaust flow vacuums the blow by. You cancel all pcv returns to intake so all the pcv vapors burn in the exhaust. The kit I used is the Moroso 25900 (part number)
@trey8543
@trey8543 4 года назад
BadAssEngineering Awesome man I’m looking forward to it! I found the kit, but I see it says it’s designed for an open straight pipe exhaust? Due to neighbors I will have to run some sort of muffler. Do you think it would still function/create enough vacuum with a straight through muffler design such as magnaflow?
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 4 года назад
Trey the problem with the muffler is not that it doesn't vacuum, it's that oil can buil up in the muffler and "cause a fire", but I've had it for 2 years with magnaflows and no problem. The vacuum is independent because it's created by Venturi principle
@trey8543
@trey8543 4 года назад
BadAssEngineering Thanks for setting that straight. I suppose they had to come up with something to “keep em off the street”. I look forward to seeing how yours is routed and I think once you post a video the catch can manufacturers are going to lose business!
@todddavidmoore
@todddavidmoore 4 года назад
@@BadAssEngineering I just subscribed so I can be notified about that promised Moroso evacuation video! I am in the USA. So if there is a way to prevent carbon build up on the intake valves on my BMW N55 engine and still evacuate crankcase - and still pass PA state inspection - that would be ideal. (Plan B might be some dual set-up to temporarily pass state inspection.) Car is my daily driver so, like Trey, I have a muffler (as well as laws/regulations) to deal with. Wouldn't an unvented OCC somewhere inline before muffler minimize some oil entry into the muffler while still allowing vacuum due to Venturi effect? However, I wonder if enough to prevent warning light and/or fire hazard issues?

@thefireham4910 5 лет назад
I have no facts behind it but I'd think at the least it helps your engine work not as hard due to the air flowing more freely. But without a dyno run and all the technical stiff I guess we will never know.
@BadAssEngineering
@BadAssEngineering 5 лет назад
theFire Ham: honestly I don't think it adds top end horsepower, but I'm convinced that it helps with a crisper throttle response at any rpm range, the engine response seems much better. It feels like I fed it a couple of espressos and can't wait to do things

Previous generation factory air box even worse design, it's a good upgrade on my 2012 Silverado 5.3. It frees up space in the engine bay, improves slightly fuel mileage followed by little sound difference at acceleration.

GERMAN ZAPATA K&N is a waste of money. Black bear performance did a cold air intake test and the stock air box with this airaid tube performed the best. The so called cold air intakes were sucking too much hot air causing the ecu to start pulling timing. The stock air box kept the temperatures down while flowing just as good as the cold air intakes.

@@Jimmyxsx nice to know I'll be tuning the truck soon at my friends dyno I'll check the numbers with the stock air filter vs the K&N but as right now Bone stock u can feel the difference
@Jimmyxsx
@Jimmyxsx 4 года назад
GERMAN ZAPATA you’ll make more peak power with the k&n but if the K&N starts sucking too much hot air the ECU will start pulling off timing. If you are using E85 fuel you shouldn’t worry about hot air as much because it burns cooler. A lot of these cold air intakes are tested with the hood open which does show a gain in HP but as soon as you close the hood thats were the open element intakes suffer.
