Do note that there is a reason for signal wires to be twisted. That is interference protection and thus sometimes important to restore when replacing wires to avoid false triggers! How large the risk is and when this really applies I can't tell but better safe than an airbag in the face without collision...

I'm buddies with another automotive electrician/diagnostician. He says the amount of guys that don't know the functions of a meter beside "V" is staggering. I myself find that many technicians don't know when to STOP using the meter, it also has limitations. I guarantee you this "simple error" would stump all the guys at my shop, but they can run circles around me doing heavy-line. Not digging at them, there is simply a specialty for every subject of a car.

What concerns me is that the other shop couldn't do a basic continuity test when they learned that the problem didn't follow the sensor. When diagnosing wire breaks I was taught the half-way method. Go 1/2 way and test either side. Move 1/2 way again in the direction of the fault and continue with this method. With even the longest run on a car you'll be down to your general area in about 5 tests. You'd have nailed that general area in 3 tests. Say the length of the fault loom was 1m. Test continuity at 50cm mark. Result will tell you which way to move your testing. Test at 25cm. Test at 12cm. Area discovered within 3 tests. Called the Newtonian approximation method.
