Airbus A310 - the second big step. History and description 

Such an underrated aircraft. Nowadys it could be sold very well for small, low cost airlines.

A310 has been a work horse for PIA . Pilots still miss it and they talk high of this aircraft . It was very powerful , robust and long range aircraft ... legend

Airbus should restart the A310 program with a NEO version. It would have a lot more range and it would be great for low cost airlines and even legacy carriers! A great plane and a workhorse for so many airlines, still flying to this day! Hopefully we can see it grace the skies once more in the not so distant future.

I have the A310 to thank for my love of aviation, ever since I was 4 years old, an uncle of mine who flew this type let me sit up in the cockpit. Have not flown on one since 2001 now, but for me will always be a favourite.

The funny thing - A310 was a commercial failure, yet new Boeing 797 middle of market design is going to be pretty much similar aircraft, but with fuel consumtion and range for today standards. A310 was ahead of its time. 757 is also aircraft that could be a top seller today, yet they stopped production early, while smaller, but comperable A321 is selling very well in recent years.

No mention about the most important thing. Completely new avionics in A310, first “glass cockpit” and no need for the 3rd flight deck crew member (the flight engineer).

I love the A310, especially its unique engine sound! I remember flying into vacation with the Hapag-Lloyd A310!

The A310 is able to take off from fairly short runways (under 2000m).............that made it in the past a great all-rounder for busy times during summer holiday flights to the smaller airports......(esspecially in Europe) His only serious rival in that case was the much smaller 757.......... and in rare cases the badly sold 767-200...... Another big advantage compared with the 767 was the wider fuselage.... So it was able to put 3 LD Freight containers next to each other......same as bigger rivals like the DC10, Tristar and 747 can do.....what made it a very populair Cargo/Combi plane too....... For many Airlines who doubted about the choice of A310 or 767.......''That'' was ''The'' reason to go for the A310..........a clearly higher residual value was their final reward for that dessision.............. BTW: Ilyushin made a same kind of modernisation back in the days with The il-86............the later version il-96-300 was also shorter then his predecessor...............but much better in every possible way!!!

The A 310 went too soon - Such a pity it did`nt succeed that well - I flew with this bird several times and always enjoyed it`s performance - She was a my favorite wide body that was`nt too big & plump. Always was a smooth ride with her..

Looooove the a310. I flew on one when I was in Thailand back in the 90s and it was one of the coolest little wide bodies I’d ever seen. Hows this for a trip? During that entire trip, I got to fly on the 747-200, 400 and sp (the sp!). As well as a leg on an a310. It was, without a doubt, the coolest air travel trip I’d ever taken. Great mix of Boeing and Airbus curiosities.

The A310 would work perfectly in today's aviation industry of 2018. Longer range, lower weight, fewer passenger capacity, and cheaper to run than the A300. Many people would rather fly direct to their destination non stop, on low demand routes. This fits the A310 perfectly. Airbus imo released the A310 a couple decades too early. If they released it today it would've gotten much more sales. I'd like to think the A350 is a revamped version of the A310.

Tarom was ome of the last European carriers that operated the type. Initially 3 and after a crash they operated the remaining till the present day.

Once I flew on the A310-300 operated by Hapag-Lloyd. That was just great. Since then I’m fascinated by that fancy aircraft

Absolutely great videos with a huge amount of information and effort going towards an excellent presentation. But if I could just take issue with two points. Point 1) At -2.45 it states that IBERIA was one of the airline's that ordered the Airbus A310. IBERIA never ordered the Airbus A10 and the airline never had the aircraft in their fleet. IBERIA on other hand flew the Airbus A300-B4 with 9 examples ordered direct from Airbus. Point 2) At -300 it states that British Airways ordered the Boeing 767 over the Airbus A310. British Airways placed an order with Boeing in November 1987 for the Boeing 767-300 version for deliveries in February 1990, the airline ordered 27 aircraft. The first flight of the Airbus A310 was in early 1982 with the first deliveries to airlines such as Air France and British Caledonian Airways starting in early April 1984. British Airways ordered the Boeing 767-300 series over five and a half years after the first flight of the Airbus A310. At the time the Boeing 767 suited the needs of British Airways over the Airbus A310. The decision by British Airways to order the Boeing 767-300 over the Airbus A310 was a commercial one based on the needs of the recently privatised British Airways and was not influenced by the United Kingdom government of the time or the retraction of the United Kingdom aerospace industry into forming British Aerospace. The only influence that the United Kingdom government made towards British Airways ordering the Boeing 767 over the Airbus A310 was the fact that the Boeing aircraft was to have Rolls Royce RB211 engines fitted. Engine commonality was one of the main reasons why British Airways ordered the Boeing 767 over the Airbus A310. British Airways newer Boeing 747-200 fleet and their recent order for the Boeing 747-400 all flew with the Rolls Royce RB211 engine as did their fleet of new narrow bodied Boeing 757-200's and fleet of wide bodied Lockheed L1011 "TriStar". Although personally I would have loved to have seen British Airways ordering the Airbus A310 and I was very disappointed at the time that they hadn't. The Airbus A310 would have looked excellent in the British Airways colour scheme of the time which was the Landor scheme.

The A300 and A310 are still flying today, mostly in the parks of cargo airlines, but there are still passenger flight operators. Such as Iran air and Mahad air.

Air India had a bunch of A300 and A310s in its fleet. I recall flying on an A300 way back in 1985.

I flied Iranair A310 as recent as last year. They still operate those and couldn't buy new ones bcz of the sanctions. It's the one like in the beginning of the video.

I flew to Salvador,Brazil 10 yeas ago in one of the TAP Air Portugal A 310 and I liked;it was a good plane. Some years later they sold them and bought A 330 and A 340;already flew in both of them and liked it too. Now we are waiting for the new 320;321 and 330 NEO TAP bought and will be delievered in June 2018...wait and see.

Pakistan international airline PIA at 3:44. PIA had both A300 and A310. Both were comfortable planes we used to travel.

The Canadian government has 5 A310 for troops transport and one for the Prime Ministe. I flew on them several times and they are a nice plane for a 30 years old plane.

Concord was first airbus aircraft but was not named airbus as others helped with it.

I loved the sound it made,heer in Birmingham we got wardair of Canada.it replaced the 747 sp which was also great sounding.

the a300 and a310 are 2 of the most dangerous accident prone planes ever built both planes statistics are similar to the DC-10 in loss stats.

Why did some A310-200's not have winglets ? The 310-300 is a fine aircraft the ones I work on have AUX fuel tanks as well, I think they were ex-Air India's ...

The idea behind twin engine jets makes me wonder if, in theory, it'd be possible to build a large single-engine jet. Presumably that would be a tail mounted engine with an intake duct just below and in front of the tail. (where 3 engine jets generally mount their third engines.) Granted, a single engine means no redundancy whatsoever (in light aircraft there's several things you'd typically be wary of doing in a single engine aircraft - such as flying long distances over water or mountains) But leaving aside the redundancy issues, it does still seem to be the case that a fewer number of large engines is cheaper than a larger number of small engines. - both in terms of fuel efficiency, AND of course purchase price of the aircraft (considering just how large a proportion of the cost of an aircraft is the engines...) Still, we'll probably never see such a design, but it's certainly an interesting thought... (maybe I'll design a fictional one and model it for a sim - X-plane for instance, since that does reasonably well with aerodynamics for fictional designs. XD)

The 797 is suppose to be a widebody. Seems Boeing has learned from the previous A310 vs 757 battle. The 757 was a good people hauler, great range for its market segment, STOL capabilities and great for hot and high airports. The A310 could do all those things but where it had the 757 beat but good was its cargo capacity. Even FedEx which generally bought used aircraft bought their A310's new from the factory. The A310 brought widebody (cargo)service to short runway airports like Portland, Maine so FedEx could haul all those L.L. Bean merchandise overnight around the US.

A310 200 was domestic. A310 300 was intercontinental. Hear these were better than 767 200 & also slightly outsold that plane.
