The stepmom is totally evil. Everything the kid was saying about curly hair care is like proper care. She had good hygiene and grooming practices and loves her hair. This lady just found it to be an inconvenience for herself. the "vanity" thing is an excuse and in general I think people call girls vain just to shame them out of taking pride in themselves. edit: Oh she resents having to care for the husband's kids. She did it as retaliation.

@@jroneida but the step mom never asked for help! If she had asked the dad clearly said he would have taken over if she didn't want to do it anymore. It was from resentment. She bottled up everything she felt and took it out on the poor girl. How horrible. I don’t think it was out of pure malice, but I do believe she is very short sighted and selfish. My sister has very curly hair and has to use special shampoo and comb/brush and stuff. This step mom is CRAZY and needs to educate herself on hair types. She definitely doesnt deserve to be caring for step daughter again.

I have to say as a curly girl… that stepmom is straight evil. Also $10? That’s CHEAP for curly hair care PLEASE relax. Also you can just teach the girl how to do her hair… she’s 11 she can learn problem solved. Plus the hairdresser? What hairdresser would agree to cut a crying child’s hair that drastically? The dad should leave that woman, that child will never want to be around her again and will hold resentment towards her forever, and that father will never trust her around his kids again.

a lot of people in america will do unthinkable traumatising things to kids even if they're crying begging you not to because their parent/guardian paid enough for them to push it aside. my mom repeatedly did something similar to me for years. several years into adult hood and living on my own i still haven't fully recovered emotionally. that little girl will hate that woman forever. especially if she hasn't had her autonomy stripped from her like that before.

Also, I might be wrong, but I remember a science class where we had to bring pee to test it for glucose and such (weird I know and i found it disgusting seeing/smelling other people's pee anyway) and the teachers assured us pee is sterile, as it does not hold germ itself, but may cary it. I agree if the son didn't clean it up he would not of learned the lesson and the dad needs to learn the lesson as well, he does not respect his daughter if he thinks she should of cleaned up her brother's mess.

Last story: NTA.. it's just an unfortunate situation. Yes the dad could have taken the kids on the drive. However it was an extremely emotional time and he simply didn't value his son's trip over his in-law's well being in the moment. The dad also tried to salvage the situation by offering to fly the kid out to finish the next 12 days of the trip (which is a long time). The real issue here is that the 18 year old hasn't been raised to prioritize family and lied about the real destination of his trip. Driving into Mexico is dangerous, especially if there is 18 year old drinking involved. The 18 year old will look back on the situation and regret being petty and not going for the remainder of the trip. It's ok for the 18 year old to be frustrated and disappointed about the situation, but insensitivity and disrespect to his parents/grandparents is not acceptable.

Some of those redditers sincerely loathe parents, I’ve noticed this as well. They act as if parents only goal in life is to give everything to the child without having anything for self. It’s odd to me that they marked him as an asshole, an asshole is inconsiderate to a point of no empathy. This parent tried their hardest to avoid skipping the trip. And then turns out the kid was lying the whole time and probably blew up because he got caught in the lie.

Your children come first in any relationship if you have any children and my best guess is his fiancé wanted all the attention and the fact that she told him to drop any custody of his daughter baffles me. She’s definitely had some issues in the past where she didn’t get a whole lot of attention, was spoiled, or whatever was going on with her. I have hair that is ridiculously long, and my mom always made sure it stayed that way since I liked it so much. She could have asked the salon for easier ways to care for her hair. I got blended layers awhile back to take care of tangling but still maintain my length. Her hair would have looked unchanged but would be easier to manage. There are ways to manage long hair without chopping it all off. The stepmother was way out of line.

@@MichiruEll to that extent I think that’s a very valid conversation. I think the issue there is does the pain of treatment outweigh the pain of the ailment, and also the odds the dog or any animal could make it through and enjoy strong quality of life afterwards
@kellharris2491
@kellharris2491 10 месяцев назад
@@maliidsmith2616 Cancer treatment is so horrible even humans often want to die rather then go through it. And they understand it. I feel like keeping the dog alive in that case is more about the owner's selfish wish then the Animal's happiness. Death is a normal natural part of life. As much as we may love them we have to understand they have a shorter life span than humans, and odds are there will come a time when you have to let them go. It's much better to let them go peacefully to sleep rather than to leave them suffering.
@MochiTheAxolotl69

While I agree you should weigh the pros and cons of treating a pet with cancer, I don’t think the argument of “they can’t consent” or “they can’t communicate their pain/needs” with us, is a valid argument. We treat children and babies…. They can’t consent either. I think that reasoning could cause damage, in regards to law making, human rights, and what we get to do with our bodies etc. Because you could technically say parents treat their children for their own selfish needs. You could argue that if they survived they have a long life ahead of them. But for the few that don’t make it, their short life was painful. It’s a very slippery slope to not getting to have these choices to make.

With the hair story, I believe whole heartedly that the stepmom was being malicious. Mostly due to the fact that she was being sneaky about it and kept comparing her and the daughters hair. the last story: The situation just sucks but I don't think anyone was the asshole in an unforgivable way. The parents' emergency plans all fell through which is super unfortunate but it might have been the wife's last time speaking to her parents. It's understandable for the 18yo to be mad losing out on a big adventure (going to Mexico without telling his parents is wild of him and dangerous but i assume it was to legally drink and not to sell drugs) even if he's immature at least he did stay and look out for his siblings. He is probably going to grow up a little more in the next couple years (if not sooner) and feel the gravity of the situation and feel sorry about how he behaved. Sometimes kids don't understand their grandparents are their parents' parents.

That hair story is truly horrifying... My mom cut my hair really short like a boy up to when I was 9 years old, but I know she was right in doing that because I would never sit still for her to brush my hair or for her to do any kind of hairstyles on me. I would cry and squirm the whole time. I've had it shoulder length when I was 6 years old, but I refused to brush it or let my mom do it. In this case, the girl is 12 years old, ffs. I'm sure she's more than capable of caring for her hair she prizes so much. Plus, cutting just like 4 or 5 inches would've been enough for the hair to be more than manageable enough for her. She chopped her whole hair off, that psychopath. To go from a hair that was bellow her bum to shoulder lenght is atrocious.

When I was 11, I had the exact same hair as this girl did. It was down to my butt, and needed to be combed with a wide tooth comb. It took over an hour to shower and comb it, and was overall a pain to maintain. What did my mom do? She sat down and said “hey, I see your hair is causing you a lot of stress. How do we fix this?”. In the end I agreed to cut off a lot of my hair and donate it. My mom also gave me $50 as treat money. I felt good that my hair could help someone else, and I also felt such relief with shorter hair since I was on the swim team. Did I miss it? At times, but I had autonomy and was empowered rather than punished.

Yeah, that was clearly the take of someone who isn’t an animal person. It’s my opinion that it’s better to take a dog in/adopt a dog and feed it than it is to be like, “no one should own a dog if they can’t afford a $10K surgery IF something goes wrong.” They puttin down dogs left and right, so better to give a dog a good home for as long as you can than to let it be murdered in a shelter. The argument of, “but we are humans and they are just animals, so we deserve the burger more than they do,” is just really... small minded to me? We are animals too. We don’t deserve anything more than any other animal; we just have the thumbs to take whatever we want. And we do. We take and take and take.

She taught herself how to sense, alert, and stay with and help my sister who was having episodes where her heart stopped. She’d stay with her while barking, licking her face, and stepping/pawing on her to wake her. My sister herself doesn’t even know when she’s going to collapse. One time it happened when we weren’t around, it was a particularly bad episode, and had the dog Chip not have barked like crazy, and come running to find someone when it was taking longer than normal to “wake her”, my sister would have died. It took me from age 7 to age 16 to get my long hair back after I asked my mom to let me cut it like Selena (the tejano singer) I regretted it immediately and when I finally got it back to butt length my step mom cut off my very lose, falling bun because she assumed I was sneaking a phone call with a boy when I was 17. I am now 24 and my hair is barely to my bra hooks😢 I have done stuff to hinder it’s growth for about 3 years after the incident such as bleach and dye it but from 20-24 I haven’t touched it with chemicals or heating tools I still bring it up to her when she shows me her long hair after she curls it or gets it done and tells me I should do something similar with mine

The idea of not letting a 17 year old talk to boys is insane to me. That's an American attitude that I really struggle to understand...but maybe that's because I come from a country where the age of consent is 16.

The second last story some of y’all went too deep and were wild. All animals have lives. They are a living creature. A pet is a responsibility and most importantly they have a life, like anything else on this planet. Their entire world is revolves around YOU THE OWNER. They rely on YOU to take care of them. It’s not like they want to shed. It’s not like they can clean up after themselves. If you are not prepared to take full care or even financially help that life out then you should rethink getting a pet. I’d rather have my future in financial ruins helping out a beloved pet then buying junk we don’t need. People go into debt for fashion, video games, expensive lifestyles etc. I’d rather save a life.
@kellharris2491
@kellharris2491 10 месяцев назад
That's actually a more modern take. Yes humans had pets but now we treat them like mini kids. Dogs in the wild only live 5-7 years. But now we stretch out their lives to 20 years if we can. We force them to live despite pain and frailness.

As a stylist, it's pretty normal to see small kids upset and struggling, but if by 11 they are clearly upset, there's generally a huge difference because small kids usually have to be eased into getting their hair cut, then eventually they calm or the parents stop cutting the kids hair, or try another stylist or salon (sometimes the kid and stylist don't mesh, sometimes the stylist isn't nice, or the parents are just gonna try whatever they think will work) but if the kids have been getting regular trims, crying isn't a normal reaction by 11 and a good stylist would try and talk TO THE CHILD despite the parent, but not all stylists are good.

The fact that the daughter is actually tring to take care of her hair and the step mom wont take the time to watch some youtube videos and thinks that using good products isnt worth it is appalling. The totally disregarded the daughter's autonomy and there were ways that she could have reduced her "stress" regarding hair care.

Cause it depends on how close the son is with the grandparents and the trip, by the update it looks like it would've been late possibly and also why couldn't OP take his children. Like I don't see how that makes sense to not take their children to possibly see their grandparents for the final time.

Okay the second step mom needs to be divorced, “I’ve decided she’s become obsessed with her hair and I don’t want her to become vain” it sounds like jealousy or envy. If y’all braid the child’s hair up it won’t need to be taken care of everyday. Additionally you’re not her mother,p and it’s not your hair, you don’t make the rules on it’s activity, and you didn’t consult either of the ACTUAL parents nor the child. You think your low view of yourself has just effected the child and I’d leave you.

He just needs to find the right woman who respects his daughter too. AITA For Forcing Step-Daughter to Cut Her Hair: Yes, I hope the father leaves the stepmother. What a piece of work forcing the girl to cut her hair. AITA For Having My Son Miss His Graduating Road Trip To Watch His Siblings: No. Grandparents almost died, this was an emergency. Parents had no other options and tried to find a way to get him on the road trip after they were able to remain home with the younger kids. Son was being unreasonable.

As a stepmom whos be in my daughters lives for 16 years since they were 2 and 7 and have different moms.... My daughter both have very distinct but different hair. My youngest has very fine, dense naturally straight super light blonde hair thats been down to her butt since she was 5 and still is at 18. My oldest has super dense and thick hair with a lot of wave patterns thats so thick and heavy it takes close to a whole day to dry completely at the roots. She inherited seborrheic dermatitis (eczema on her scalp) from her daddy. Imagine my mornings.... And imagine what it was like each time either of them has lice at little kids. idk which one was worse, the combing nits out of butt long hair, or combing them out of hair long and so dense and thick it would snap the combs handles ?. Never once in a million years would I take it upon myself to do ANYTHING permanent to their hair!!!!! Im not doing my stepmom duties right if im not being loving, encouraging and supportive as im elbow deep into picking lice and nits out of their hair with a smile on my face when they EACH require their own individual hair products for washing and styling, and different types of brushes, hair band, head bands and weekly treatments.... Woman was malicious about 10 minutes of her day and $11.00 of her husbands money.... Is she gonna try to put her on birth control to " level her flow" when she starts believing her period is " too heavy" and having to buy the large box of heavy flow products is annoying her bc she thinks shes being wasteful? Some people dont deserve to be stepmom. Get outta here!

The hair post makes me so sad. Curly hair Does require all those extra things. My mother also sprung an extreme haircut on me. It was straight hair, below my waist, but super thick and knotted easily. She didn't want to braid it anymore and I couldn't French braid it quickly myself. The hair dresser was awful. My mom asked for shoulder-length but the stylist cut it just below my ears while ridiculing me for not keeping it de-tangled, despite brushing it twice/day.

Cutting that child's hair was abuse. The stepmother was jealous and resentful the child had nice hair. The fact that she could watch the girl cry and still cut the hair shows a total lack of empathy that would disturb me if I was the dad. And calling her vain? It's called self-esteem, not vanity (at least at that age). It made her feel good about herself. That is a GOOD thing for a kid. If I were her mother, I would tell the dad she is not to be left alone with that woman or I am petitioning for full custody.

On the hair cutting, I’m 64 female at 9 I had difficulties getting knots out of the back underneath while brushing my hair. My mom would rip the brush throughout n make me cry. Each time she threatened having it cut well one Saturday it happened. It was cut in the ugliest I call it an Egyptian pixie blunt and straight. Horribly ugly! I looked like a boy, I still have my ponytail. I was traumatized and to this day when it’s shoulder length I can’t stand it. It is very long right now and makes me feel more feminine when I can do a beach hairstyle or lots of big curls! Leave your girls hair alone and actually help them learn about caring for it not forcing your choice on them! Raising children takes patience!

What I don’t understand about the last one is why not just take the kids with them??? Especially bc this easily could have been their last chance to see their grandparents. That way the son can still go to the trip and they can still go be with family and it would have given the other kids a chance to see them in case the worst happened. 4 hours isn’t even that long of a drive imo? So the kids could have handled the drive

i feel like people are hating on Sam too much and jumping to "that's silly/small minded" and dismissing him unnecessarily: Brandon even started by saying it's different for black people, because usually the culture growing up is not similar to non-black families wherein pets are considered on/near the same level as the rest of the family. my mom tried to convince me to give my dog back when i first got him, but now she's grown to love him and does a lot for him but still has certain boundaries and that's not something i hold against her
@MeyaRoseGirl
@MeyaRoseGirl 5 месяцев назад
On the dog story, I think I get why that friend is getting a divorce. That sense of entitlement was probably way too much for his wife to deal with. But even taking into account the cultural differences, it would be like if someone offered a place for you to stay and you made the demand that they needed to do an expensive remodel on their house before you move in. No, they're doing you a favor, giving you a place to stay. That doesn't give you the right to completely change the house. Beggars can't be choosers, and if you are offered a place to stay while you are down, I'd say it's your responsibility to be as unobtrusive as possible because it's jarring enough on a household to have a whole new person move in. I'd say there is a reasonable expectation that they keep the dog (and kids, for that matter) out of his room, but they're not going to keep it out of the common areas like the kitchen and living room, and if he can't live with that, find somewhere else to live. And I'm always baffled by people who think that having pet makes a house so much messier. No, people who don't keep their house clean are what makes a house messy. Pet ownership doesn't have anything to do with it. (That's just a pet peeve of mine because I had a coworker who was weird about germs even before covid. She'd wear rubber gloves whenever she touched anything communal like doorknobs or elevator buttons. But her work desk was FILTHY with food crumbs. That is so much more disgusting than doorknobs and the like that get regularly cleaned.)

I'd say the son in the last story is more of an asshole than the dad. He didn't care about his grandparents' or his mother's well-being. Like the dad offered, if I was him I would've took that offer. But I guess that's asking too much for an immature person. 😅
@Manders73
@Manders73 Год назад
The immaturity argument seems incredibly silly to me honestly, it wasnt about being immature it was about being compassionate. The son was definitely lying about the trip, the parents did what they could with the information they had. I think there's a lot more about the trip situation that the son is hiding that would shine more light on his reaction.

And my dynamics are different between me and my family because my mom wouldve wanted me to wait till i was off of work if i wanted to see her in the hospital and to pick up the cat to take care of. I feel that this kids parents and him dont really share what would be expected in an emergency on a regular basis so none of them were really prepared for it. I think the reason OP was declared the asshole in the last post was because it sure sounds a lot like parentification. OP's kids are not 18yo's kids, so it's unreasonable for the parents to completely dump all the responsibilities of them onto him. I really do think the right thing to do here would have been to take them with them even if he WASN'T planning on leaving on a trip. A commentator pointed out: what would they have done if he had already left? When it comes to a much older sibling being responsible for younger siblings, I ask: what would you have done if you didn't HAVE that eldest child? That's how you should be thinking because your younger kids are not your older kids' responsibility. You were the one that decided to have more kids. Not them. I say soft asshole because it WAS an emergency, and they were probably so frantic in the moment that all other concerns just took a backseat. And it is certainly true that he only missed a day or two and could have caught up, and that seems to be the best way to make it up to him, but he decided to have an immature tantrum instead of working out the logistics of joining his friends. The fact that he had that immature tantrum and he wasn't willing to put in the work to figure out those logistics is probably proof he isn't mature enough to be going on a cross-country trip. But he's 18, so I guess you can't stop him... But I don't think he's mature enough to be taking care of children, either.
