… Nobody knows everything We know this to be true *Everything is difficult* Except what's in front of you But it's complicated even under your nose Bullshit math equations And your highs and your lows And your manic depression It comes and it goes Your parasympathetic nervous system reacts And you're in fight-or-flight mode … How's the world so small when the world is so large? And what made the world, could I please speak to who's in charge? *Everything is real but it's also just as fake* From your daughter's birthday party to your grandmother's wake And your Bipolar illness, it comes and it goes You parasympathetic nervous system reacts And you're in fight or flight You're in fight or flight You're in fight or flight mode … I've tried to know which words to sing so many times And I've tried to know which chords to play *And I've tried to make it rhyme* And I've tried to find the key that all good songs are in And I've tried to find the notes to make that great resounding din … But there's a bad man in everyone No matter who we are *There's a rapist and a Nazi living in our tiny hearts* Child pornographers and cannibals, and politicians too There's someone in your head waiting to fucking strangle you … So here's to you, Mrs. Robinson People love you more, oh never-mind *Oh, never-mind* In fucking fact, Mrs. Robinson The world won't care whether you live or die You live or die In fucking fact, Mrs. Robinson They probably hate to see your stupid face Your stupid face So here's to you, Mrs. Robinson You live in an unforgiving place
When I first ran away, an ex of mine showed me this song. He probably didn’t realize how deep this resonated with my soul..but it did. His funerals tomorrow, Rest In Peace Aaron we all miss you
Just as a note though, it is your sympathetic nervous system, not parasympathetic NS, that is responsible for sending you into fight or flight mode! this is not to be mean but just a note!!!
This was one of the favourite bands of my ex girlfriend that died earlier this year. I hope you are in a better place now and thank you for showing me this in 2017 when we met.
This was my high school soundtrack. I said I'd never delete songs I got tired of for reasons like this. You forget about them until you hear it again and you wonder why you stopped listening in the first place? Why did I? Truly so many good songs off limewire I'll never get back.
"But there's a bad man in everyone, no matter who we are..there's a rapist and a nazi living in our tiny hearts, child pornographers and cannibals, and politicians too..there's someone in your head waiting to FUCKING strangle you" that verse is fucking fire, if I ever made a song that'd definitely be in it
@@rikuvanetti7149 because it's common. You'd be surprised how many pieces of literature and songs contain even exact lines and whole stanzas from other pieces of art
Even before finally being diagnosed with Bipolar 2 in my late teens, this song stuck with me since childhood. It means that much more to me in my adulthood.
To me, what makes this so terribly upsetting, is that unlike a lot of other "weird dudes with a guitar" kind of music is the fact that I've seen Sean live and he's _uncomfortably_ sincere. This isn't just him preaching. These are the actual awful thoughts in his head. That both makes this song so much worse _and_ so much better. If that makes any sense.
Everyone complaining that it's the Sympathetic Nervous System that reacts, technically the Parasympathetic Nervous System also reacts, its shuts off rest and digest, shutting off is also a reaction
I found this song through a post in a facebook group called "oddly specific playlists" that was requesting songs with incorrect information in them. Apparently it's not your parasympathetic nervous system that is responsible for fight or flight mode, that's your sympathetic nervous system. Your parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for rest and digest mode, and I am obsessed with that word
So some line changes I've noticed in hearing them live. "Parasympathetic nervous system reacts" was changed to "parasympathetic nervous system shuts off." Also the word "rapist" was changed to "racist" which I assume is because it's a trigger word for a lot of people.
That's because the parasympathetic nervous system is actually responsible for relaxation. Fight-or-flight mode is the job of the sympathetic nervous system.
The term was probably changed to racist to fit to the modern day political climate. If he's not changing the mention of child pornographers and nazis then i think it's less a worry of triggers and more to keep it relevant to the time he's playing. Like Kimya Dawson playing Loose Lips
Don’t know that you’ll ever read this, but I sent this to my son when he left for the military. He loved it, just as much as I did. Thank you for making it ❤️
There is a character named Gertrude Robinson. This song actually resonates with a lot of the characters whose lives she touches as you go through the series (without giving spoilers). (Really the song works with the series in general, but the name helps)
You ever hear a song that just *fits* with where you are at mentally? I'm crying but like, both in a good and bad way??? If that makes sense??? If not... Welcome to the club.
This song never ever gets old because it's less appealing for a catchy melody and more appealing for incredible lyrics. Lyrics that you could repeat over and over and over and over again and they never stop resonating with you on an understanding and personal level. This is one of the greatest songs ive ever heard lyric-wise, it's poetry. Every line is special and meaningful, and the message is just so human- in terms of being a bad person and hating yourself, hating everyone else, knowing that you don't understand anything and desperately wanting to. It's the acknowledgment that life is suffering and nothing cares about you and you can't understand why. It's humble and self-destructive and a bit angry and that's what folkpunk kinda is at its core. I find this song works best with the contexts of their other songs like "People" and "Survival Song" and "Rejoice", because all of AJJ's songs together seem to tell a story of "the world is a horrible place to live and people are hateful and selfish and we all want to die, but somehow we don't and we keep on living, and somehow we find good things despite it all."
this song fucking slaps. I have never heard such a good song. I can't find anything bad about this song. The rythm, the beat, the voice, nothing wrong. My girlfriend introduced it to me and thank god she does. I love this song so much but it doesn't compare to how much I love her
Was anyone going to tell me the line is "fight or flight mode" and not "firefly mode" or was I just supposed to read a comment by a disgruntled psych student myself?
I knew about this song before taking a college psych course, so when I started reading about sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous systems, I was like "Hm... I think- I think he was wrong- Oh yep, he was definitely wrong."
I’ve been listening to this song for awhile now and have only just now realized that the last verse appears to be referencing Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Mrs Robinson’. Didn’t see anybody else mention it so I thought I’d share.
i'm a little ashamed to admit but i've known this song for ages and only very recently discovered the mrs. robinson thing is a simon and garfunkel reference. but it does makes more sense now lmao
Well that's okay, it means AJJ is doing a lot better :D He can't pump out infinite anxiety song content, yanno. I think I'm very satisfied with the amount of anxiety songs he's made. I don't think I've ever seen anxiety captured so well, most people just boil it down to "OH SCARY AAAAAAAH" but its so so much more than just that, its so much more than that
I found this tune around 6 months ago and it made me check out loads of folk punk. I fucking love AJJ so much, hope to see you guys in the UK real soon.
If you love these guys ( I sure do ) you should listen to crywank there on as good a level as this so 10/10 and there who got me into folk punk and anti-folk
@@alpaca9994 Thanks for the shout, known about Crywank since 2013. Not really a fan of their new stuff but Tomorrow Is Nearly Yesterday is a good album.
this song i found it right after getting away from a freind that was only snuffing my feeling out and replacing them with hers, forcing me to allign to her isdeals while snuffing out any controversal individuality i had. its somthing i still havent gotten over, idk if its possible for me to, i wanna make her hate me like i do her, but i know thats not possible anmd it feels so fucking cruel, i weish shewas never in my life but i also miss the times she was. its utterly toxic and fucking nothing but pain, but the glimpses of kindness just kept bringing me back. untill i was finally shown it wasent normal and shouldent be by others, its wild, being shot down and put into a box of nothing but wholesome ideals with no acceptions accept when she did it, cause her ideals ruled andanyone who stayed was a sinner a demon a cruel person who did nothing but hurt others. it fekt horrible everyday and now that im free, i cant help but miss the good times
She came out just to put me my heart on strings again, to tell me that she misinterpreted my compassion as love, and to shame me for being compassionate to the world
its sympathetic nervous system is what controls your fight and flight. The parasympathetic nervous system is involuntary things such as digestion. Didn't realize this until I took animal physiology :C
Yo I’m pretty sure that this is in response to the song “Mrs Robinson” by Simon and Garfunkel. The ending is almost identical to the chorus in “Mrs Robinson”
And I just today realized that the chorus of this song is a Simon & Garfunkel cover (more of a version since they changed the lyrics a lot) after the original played over the radio.
It bothers me that he says that my parasympathetic nervous system is what gets me into fight or flight mode...but in reality it’s the sympathetic nervous system which does that. The parasympathetic nervous system is what returns your body to normality and prevents you from overexerting yourself for too long or withstanding immense stress. It’s what causes you to faint when you feel unbearable pain or forces you to take deep breaths after having a terrifying nightmare.
"There's a bad man in everyone, no matter who we are There's a rapist and a nazi living in our tiny hearts!" fuckin shouldn't rip as a lyric BUT IT DOES
