Akaso Brave 8 Vs. DJI Osmo Action (1st Gen) - In-Depth Comparison

In this video I test and compare the latest Akaso action camera, the Brave 8, against a nearly 4 year old action camera, the original DJI Osmo Action. Some people say the Akaso is a good value and much cheaper than the latest from GoPro and others. But what if it was compared to an older camera that isn't much more expensive right now. How would it fare?

Great comparison. I had looked at newer budget cams but think I'll stick with my Osmo Action 1st Gen...it's still a great little camera for what I need. Thought budget cams might have improved but doesn't look like it...looks like mostly a software issue though.

I was looking for a "budget" actioncam quite some time now. I went from a 2016 SJcam M10+ and tried several Akaso's already. But even my 2016 M10+ had sharper recordings on 1080p/ 60fps on the same recordings, where the Akso file size was double of that of the SJcam. So I've returned them. I was looking a while for higher end Akasos like the Brave 7 and 8. But they're insanely expensive here in Europe for a budget cam. The Akaso brave 8 is even close to €230. So the gap is dissapearing here between "budget cams" and the "a-brands". And I already was dissappinted with 2 Akasos (V50X and Brave 6+). Last week came across a good offer of the new "Osmo Action 3" for only €300. So a no-brainer compared to the €230 Brave 8 for me. I think Akaso really needs to improve things or drastically drop the price. Good review btw!

I was sent one of those $50 action cams a few weeks ago and haven't gotten around to making a review. As a little webcam watching my 3D printer, it isn't bad...But for everything else....Bah.

Any newer action cameras with a 3.5mm mic input directly in camera?

Unfortunately, not really that I'm aware of. Technically, the Sony RXO II has a built-in microphone jack, but it's not quite an action camera and it's super expensive. It's basically one of their RX100 cameras in a smaller body. I'm sure the image quality is good, but if you don't need a tiny body you'd probably be better off getting a ZV-1. Right now, B&H has a deal on the original Osmo Action where it comes with three extra batteries (for a total of four), a three place battery charger, the 3.5mm mic input jack accessory and a bunch of extra mounting plates. A GoPro Hero 8 and up can be used with a "media mod", which provides a mic jack. But still, nothing built-in.
