Welcome back Akira Bike fans and the Recumbent / Feet Forward motorcycle curious!
In this video, I finish up the frame extension procedure fabricating the two main vertical frame side rails and reveal some excellent new animations of the phase I prototype end goal.
Subscribe and follow along while I'm designing and building a fully functional high performance recumbent (aka feet forward) motorcycle inspired by Kaneda's ride in "Akira" in this ambitious motorcycle project.

I always wanted to make an electric version of it, but due to lack of funds, it can only be a dream, I hope you get yours running soon

Thanks! yeah this is not a cheap endeavor! I spend most of my free time & $$ on it and constantly working hard on it, it will be running soon. I do plan on making an electric and a hybrid version too, and even offering less expensive kit versions. Thanks for following the project.

I would love to see the same design, but with the Honda 750 DCT powertrain. I'd rather not deal with a chain.
@matus1976
@matus1976 Год назад
Absolutely agree, this is actually just for the phase I prototype, around phase III I'll be upgrading to a shaft drive. The chain drive just makes it easier right now to deal with the incorrect gearing which comes from a 30" rear tire and get some basic testing of the platform done asap. Id prefer to wait a bit before getting expensive custom made spiral bevel gears made, but the final version will be shaft drive.

I really wish that electric powerplant that was in the anime actually existed. Your project looks beautiful.

Love your work. I do welding/fabrication & much prefer it when given the chance to present a solution rather than work to a piss-poor design laid out by a clueless engineer who never gets his hands dirty. You my friend are living the dream. & if I may make a suggestion - have you considered fitting belt drives as opposed to chains? No oiling, just periodic checks for correct tension & wear. Doubtless there will be others who will bang on about how belt drives sap power - I've seen figures, it's minimal - but if high performance was the end goal I surmise that you would have gone with a bigger capacity engine. Much respect & admiration from the UK.

Thank you! I do feel quite fortunate and appreciate the support and fact I can do work like this. It's truly a different world when you go from paper to reality that people who never build things can never remotely appreciate. I have considered belts and other methods and have no issues with belts, the build will happen in phases and this is just the first phase (hardtail chain drive) later phases will have a different system to deliver power to the rear wheel since I ultimately want to use a *steered* rear wheel on a single sided swingarm and neither belts or chains or hydraulics will really be practical for that. I don't like the unsprung weight of a electric hub motor either. So I'll be testing my drive system it out around phase III, I also have bigger motors to put in here in later phases. I Just didn't want to slap a 100 HP cx650 turbo in an untested first build. Stay tuned it'll be awesome.

I understand your amarican and this is made for a taller audience but I was wondering how someone who is 5 ft would fit on the bike. I saw a video a few months ago addressing this size issue makeing it larger. Can't wait to buy a kit from you though the bike is going to look epic

Thanks!!! Looking forward to finishing it, getting kits out, and starting the next version! The sizing problem was more about most builds being too small for any person, because they are scaled from conventional motorcycle tires and typically have 250cc or smaller engines due to local regulations. Their purpose is usually focused looking just like the bike from the anime / manga and not a focus on being functional and reproduceable. Mine will be highly adjustable, the floorboards / foot controls alone will be able to move about 12" back, the handlebars also can slide forward and back and change angle. Seat and headrest will have some adjustability too. The adjustability will be more like a car, here's an image that shows all the adjustable points www.matus1976.com/images/seating%20adjustments.jpg?crc=47437472 I'm aiming for something more like the 95th% used for cars (it should comfortably accommodate 95% of people)

I think the CX500 requires periodic valve adjustments. Does the placement/shape of the braces allow removal of the valve cover to perform that maintenance?
@matus1976
@matus1976 Год назад
That's a great point, I didn't plan for that but I think the valve covers will be easily removable, I'll double check though and if it's not easily removable I'll see if a simple frame change will fix it.

How much would it cost
@matus1976
@matus1976 Год назад
I won't know for sure until I finish everything, but probably starting at 15k for a kit version of these prototype models and the weight and performance optimized versions will be more.

How about a Hayabusa engine with a turbo instead? That will be more like Akira's motorbike performance 🤪👍
@matus1976
@matus1976 Год назад
This is just the first phase prototype, I'll be putting bigger motors in later. The hayabusa is a beautiful motor, it's hard to fit though, along with most inlines and parallel twins, since it leans forward. I have a cx650 turbo I'll put in their later that will bump it up to ~100HP, but I'll also be exploring supporting other engines and making a kit version and see if can fit hayabusa in there and keep it looking good.
