In Europe most big cemeteries have a playground. Your kids could play while you took care of family graves and changed out the plants for the different. We grew up playing at them while my father did geneology research while stationed overseas.
A Kansas sunflower girl who has spent over fifty years of her life in Alabama. Wonderful video! Thanks so much for your travels, at 84 not doing the travel I would like.
The Natural Bridge namesake is such a hidden gem. I’ve been a few times. Once as a Boy Scout. Another as a cousin to a yankee who just moved into our state.
My grandmother Ora Self owned and operated Ora’s cafe in Brilliant for decades. The cafe and house are long gone but her legacy lives on as well as many others that lived in that small town.
Alabama is neat I really liked the natural bridge and the walk you always find the neatest places to go. I love the KFC chicken coop. Thanks for the ride along and the video keep them coming stay safe.
Wow fascinating video, lots of factual info, thanks a lot John. Would have loved to have had a good look round the Brilliant mine, seen some coal from there and any old workings if that would have been at all possible. Lovely well kept cemetery at Gu-Win!
1st I just want to thank you for spotlighting our beautiful small towns in Alabama . I live in Marion county where Guin is and darlin we pronounce it "Gyoo-in but great video btw God bless and thx again
As always, you make the best travel videos. It's nice to hear that the folks in rural Alabama were friendly to you. I have driven through that area a few times and couldn't shake the idea that I wasn't welcome as an outsider.
As someone from Brilliant, I was looking at those aerial shots you took. I can tell that was done on a Tuesday because of the blue trash bins are out on the curb. Shame I was out there that day.
Thank you for the awesome video! I graduated from Brilliant HS. I truly appreciate you shedding some light on our area. BTW, Guin is pronounced “Gyu win” and you pronounce Gu-Win almost identically but give a pause between the syllables. At one time, Gu-Win also had the youngest mayor in the US. I believe that he was 20 at the time that he was elected. Thanks again for the great video!
Great vid! Birmingham is my home. Love the befitting street signs in the drive-in. 😁 Had heard of the Natural Bridge; can't believe i didn't know how phenom it is!!! Gotta go! Tinkusoberrymooch for sharing this!☺
If you find yourself in southeast Amabama look up Abbeville. Our town in like a Hollywood set downtown at night with a bunch of antique neon signs decorated store fronts complete with 50's rock and roll playing at night. Abbeville looks like a bustling town but only a few actual businesses are down town. Very pretty town well kept with nice folks.
Gosh I hate when your videos are over, but always feel like I've been on a great adventure. Loved Natural Bridge, could spend the day there exploring. You always find the most interesting towns, folks that don't get off the fast track interstate miss so much. Tulsa has a drive in and Sapulpa just reopened one, I don't think either of them are as unusual as Gu-Win's. Thanks for another great adventure, stay safe and GOD bless
We also have Possum Trot (it’s not in as rural of a place as it sounds, it’s right by Anniston, which is one of our largest metros), Burnt Corn, Smelley, Screamer, Lick Skillet, Gobblers Crossing, Slick Lizzard, Intercourse, Frogeye, Climax, Gamble (despite gambling being illegal here still)… I could go on and on. There’s a whole website dedicated to them lmao
Alabama's is certainly unique in history about small towns & names. Beautiful area with natural bridge. Drone coverage brought out pines proudly standing among ones asleep for winter. 🙂 Another great adventure in neat state. Thanks John.
Not too long ago, US Hwy 78 Connected memphis and Birmingham and yiu had to go thru Winfield and Gu-Win. When they made interstate 22, Those towns were kind of bypassed. You can still get to him from the interstate. But you have to exit and make a little ways. I enjoyed winfield a lot, except for their speed limit. I was making my trip later. I always wondered how the towns were faring without all the traffic going through. Thank you for the tour. I always wanted to stop and see how the towns are doing, but seems like i'm always in a hurry when I drive by
My cousin is from only 45 mins or so southeast of these places in Graysville. I know them pretty well. I grew up around Moody. If you wanna see weird town names, you should see our towns of Intercourse, and then you’ll see yourself in Climax and Seaman. Yeah, those are real places here haha we also have Possum Trot, Frogeye, Slick Lizzard, Burnt Corn, Boar Tush, Smut Eye, Scarce Grease, Scratch Ankle, Lick Skillet, Booger Tree, and Gobbler’s Crossing, just to name a few.
@@TravelwithaWiseguyohh nice! I’ve never been to the Midwest. All the pics I’ve seen of there have really pretty sunsets. The closest thing to the Midwest I’ve been to is Tennessee lol I’ve been all over the eastern seaboard from Jacksonville, FL to NYC and the Gulf Coast from Slidell, LA to PCB, FL.
Thanks for Guwin to this part of the state, Brilliant idea. I'm sure if you asked most folks in this area would agreement in total would be that is was a Sweet Home. Well except perhaps those flightless birds fleeing the Colonels abode in haste. Betcha it will seem like a natural bridge to the next video. Thanks again John, good jpb
Wow! I didn't think drive-in theaters were even around anymore. When I was in Jr. High and High School we had 3 or 4 in our capital city. We had a lot of fun at those theaters. Too bad the future generations won't have that priveledge. Thanks for sharing another fun excursion.
Hey Coach. This film features some peaceful very pleasant surroundings. I like seeing the Natural Bridge. My favorite part was seeing the drive in.I remember as kids, we'd jump in the back seat of one of Dad's old Chevrolets and my parents would take us to a drive in here on Long Island.I think you could strike oil out here before you'd find a drive in anymore these days.It was comforting to see that kfc had an operation as featured in the closing moments. Back in early 2000's they featured the Zinger chicken sandwich, which sandwich I enjoyed.
If you wanna see some real interesting stuff in Alabama, go check out a place called Alliance. Honorable mention Brookside, Empire and our own beloved Walker County.
A wonderful video as always! My but they have an interesting area down there. Natural Bridge was a beautiful natural area. And all the towns seemed very nice. Had an acquaintance in college that we called Johnny Reb. His grandmother was from Alabama, and he liked her stories of back home so much he took on the feeling he was from Bama. The area you were in was pretty enough that I could of joined in with him. Thanks again for another wonderful road trip!
Interesting video, there must have been a lot of Native American people using the natural bridge for shelter. Boston is a name for a mountain range in Arkansas, and a local village here in SW Missouri. Had to laugh at the outro, keep safe, God bless
Way off topic here but have you visited Murfreesboro Arkansas where the diamond dig is? I'd love to go spend some time there. I'd be happy to take home a rock that isn't a diamond. I love rocks, that's my souvenirs when I visit a place. Maybe you could go dig and explore there someday. May GOD richly bless you dear
A few other "interesting" names of Alabama towns: Slapout, Frog Eye, Slick Lizard, Arab (but it's pronounced AY-Rab), Smut Eye, Bacon Level, Dogtown, Lick Skillet, and my favorite, Intercourse.
Well, the only reason I've really heard of Brilliant was because of brilliant wood. I guess I could see a sheen applying to the coal, too. Also, Guin's pronounced Gu-in, whereas Gu-Win is pronounced Gu-win.
One thng you missed that I was hoping to see is the indians face carved into the cliff face. 20 years ago you could really see it but the rain over the years has smooted it out but if you look at it you can still make out his face. Great Video.
just FYI, Gu-Win and Guin are pronounced completely different than your pronunciation by the locals, Guin is more like Gyuin with a shorter vowel sound, which is known for the F-5 tornado that almost blew it off the map in April 1974 after winning 2 straight football championships in 72-73, Winfield and Guin have some of the nicest and friendliest people in the world Brilliant football fans had an infamous reputation for being very rowdy if they lost a game to opposing rivals and would throw things and rock opposing teams buses or that's what I've heard all my life, we never played them so I never experienced this but do remember our coaches in some places telling us to keep our helmets on until we got out of town, as they take their football seriously
Hey John, since you’re a Kansan, comment me the ones u heard of and the ones that you haven’t since these are the locations of my Kansan friends. Kinsley, Hillsboro, Great Bend, Baldwin City, Elkhart, Marion, Liberal, Garden City, Hugoton, Osage City, Goodland, Hays, and Council Grove. Name the ones that you heard of and ones you haven’t
Note to self: My fave track coach is getting some gray in his beard. I don't want to say anything about it cause he night get mad! He still looks cool though! 😉
Wonderful video of our beautiful part of Alabama but I really do wish you had spoken to some local people in Gu-Win and Guin and learned the proper way to say those names. You totally butchered them.
