The Goths in general (and to be precise the Ostrogoths) were much better to the Italian people than the Lombards. The Ostrogoth rule of Italy tried to live in symbiosis with the population, mostly respecting their laws and traditions.

they forced his hand. he tried every possible means get the land that was promised to him by emperors of rome. he fought in their wars. He wanted to be legitimately crowned as king by Roman Emperror. when he sacked rome. he knew there was no turning back. he worked for it throughout his life yet it became unachievable
