tolerate it: it's in 5/4 time signature, which is why it sounds "irregular". Your brain automatically wants 4/4 signature, but it's such a great choice, because it almost emulates how she's "younger" and "inexperienced" and is always out of step in this relationship. It also matches how the song ends: with no resolution. The time signature never feels balanced or complete, just like their relationship isn't balanced and we never get a definite decision from Rebecca's: she's still sitting and watching him and we're left waiting for her action.

“Drawing hearts in the by-line” I always thought this lyric was another metaphor for her worshiping him. The by-line of an article is the line in which the author or writer is stated. By her drawing hearts in the byline I always saw it as her drawing hearts beside his name, still making him her everything. Xxx

I agree!! And I also believe that this can be another example of how she feels like a kid alongside with the "waiting by the door like I'm just a kid" and always mentioning how he is older, because drawing hearts beside the name of a person you like is a teenager/child thing to do.
@AllTheArtsy
@AllTheArtsy 2 года назад
Exactly! The byline is not the margins, it's where the writer is named. It's actually obvious, at least to me, that her husband is a writer -- "While you were out building other worlds, where was I? / Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life / Drawing hearts in the byline" -- Building other worlds can mean he writes fiction. She is drawing hearts on his name.
@Mila-Rosa
@Mila-Rosa Год назад
Okay so I'm RIDICULOUSLY late to this but I took it as him not really seeing her as a whole person and not including her in his life, or 'story', so instead of her name on the byline, there are just hearts, which further shows that even though her identity has been erased, she's still doing all of the work to keep this relationship going and it emphasizes the one sided nature of their relationship.

I see Evermore as the epitome of storytelling. In Folklore she wrote more musical songs but still more about an specific feeling or situation. In Evermore she wrote literal stories with full plots and even plot twists, she’s literally insane and we love her for that

Watching this back after You’re Losing Me and fathoming that she probably put Tolerate It as a track 5 because there might have been a moment in their relationship where Taylor felt Joe was just tolerating her shit. Because there are so many parallels with both songs! And it makes sense that she used barbed wire in the song which steals it from Invisible String because maybe it was about him. * passiveness of both partners in both songs (I notice everything you do or don’t do/do something babe) * her trying so hard to be better for the partner (used my best colors for your portrait/ gave you all my best me’s) * she knows she’s worth more and he isn’t seeing it (I know my love should be celebrated / I’m the best thing at this party) * she feels like she’s being ignored (while you were out there building other worlds where was i? / front lines don’t you ignore me) * she feels that she has to beg him for his love (now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life / literally the whole second half of the bridge) * she feels that her pain is so insignificant (always taking up too much space and time / i know my pain is such an imposition) Like i am losing my fucking MIIIIINNNDDD

@@Aiibh of course! In my opinion it is about the speaker leaving the person. The metaphor of "gaining the weight" of their relationship and then, by leaving she would be losing the weight of that person (possibly also hinting that the relationship feels heavy etc.) . Similar to the previous line (took this dagger in me and removed it) the speaker is saying that it would be very hard to leave the person they are talking about, but that it was possible. I always think of the line “where’s that man that threw blankets over my barbed wire?” in the way of how someone would sneak into a place with a barbed wire fence. When people break in somewhere they usually throw car blankets over barbed wire so they can climb over easier. I thought this was a way of saying that he climbed over her walls and over her defenses to get to her and she looked at it as something special and meaningful

For some reason, when I listen to the bridge and get to the line “believe me I could do it”, I get the feeling that she’s almost trying to convince herself that she can leave, more than convincing her husband. Telling herself she can have the courage to leave the relationship. Additionally, with the opening lyrics matching the end, it makes me think that this entire song is kind of an inner monologue, unsure if her feelings are just “all in her head”, hoping she’s wrong but also convincing herself that she can leave. Tolerate It is a damn masterpiece.

YES to everything you said. I tried to explain this song to a friend and she just said, “why doesn’t she just up and leave him” …with the intonation and implication that she thought the woman was weak. Safe to say she was on the non-voluntary listening end of a complex explanation of all dem complexities…of insecurity, uncertainty and-most of all-the complete and utter mindfuck that is hopeful hesitation. “Use my best colours for your portrait” - I saw these lyrics as she tends to paint him in a better light than he deserves, simply because she loves him so much. Her portraits of him (the way she thinks of him, the ways she speaks about him, the way she portrays him to her friends and family) always use her best colours because she’s wants to highlight the good in him, not the bad.

I always call Dorothea's narrator "Leo". My weird reasoning: Dorothea means "the gift (of God)" which is also what "Nala" means in Swahili. Nala the lion -> Leo, which I also like because this song sounds August-ish (month, not song) which is the main month for the Leo star sign. I like how that correlates, because as you said, Tis' the Damn Season sounds not like a Christmas song, but like the season itself, and its told in the present, i.e., when Dorothea is actually in Tupelo for the holiday. Leo's perspective in Dorothea is during the off-season, when she's back in L.A, so I like the synergy of it sounding like summer. Thus, "Leo".

I've been calling Dorothea's lover "Sunny" ever since I decided "Midnight Rain" was in the Dorothea Cinematic Universe. Sunny can be a name or nickname. Also, it could be spelled Sunni, which I understand to be a Korean girl's name, or Sonny, a common boy's nickname that doesn't go with any one name (like Junior and Chip).
@mhysa1864
@mhysa1864 Год назад
Wait what. Midnight rain in Dorothea Universe makes sense because: 1) The lyrics "He wanted it comfortable, I wanted that pain" can be viewed as -> he wanted to stay in their hometown, have a normal job and be comfortable with his "living" or whatever, but she wanted that "pain" which is that pain that some pop stars experience (lack of privacy, pressure to be perfect, etc...) but at the end she wanted it. 2) In Midnight Rain she refers to how he has this family things like family gatherings, family time together and more and to her it came like a post card (from another city) but for him it's every day 'cause he's there with his family every day and she's not!? 3)And she was also making her own name, chasing that fame. And in the beginning she mentions pageant queens and new pretenders (like pop culture and stuff if that makes sense).

I feel like, as we learned in the long pond sessions when taylor talked about hoax, her songs can address and be about more than one situation, so happiness, in my opinion, could be both about abigail’s divorce and about the situation with scott. The entire song is told from the perspective of a divorce, so it might be literally about abigail’s situation, but she pulled inspiration from her own experiences, like she always does, so the divorce story is literally abigail’s, but it’s metaphorically about the breakdown of her own relationship with scott and her realization that she could maybe forgive him in the future.

Yes!! Love this!! Love to see you guys perspective on her songs!! Happiness hurts.....It really hits home.....I needed to let a horrible person and her actions from my past go and was only able to do that in July.....And to see that she wasn't evil and to see my part in all of our fighting wasn't easy. So the first time I heard this song.....I just started crying. (Never thought that was gonna happen). So much love and respect for Taylor for making this!!

Every time the intro music plays on no body no crime, I get such vivid mental imagery of the town where this story takes place. It is really as though I can see the houses & landscape around me, and feel the cold, misty air on my skin. It's such a good intro!

In happiness, the lines "i hope she'll be a beautiful fool" and "green light of forgiveness" are direct references to the great gatsby. I feel like she's drawing on the same feeling of knowing someone in a time before and the struggles of moving on - even with residual feelings that contradict the rational need to move on from the hurt that you have been caused to feel.

Also Dorothea is SUPERIOR. It has such a wholesome longing feeling to it. It feels like Marianne (from Normal People) is singing this to Connell after he moves to New York maybe? Because Tis the damn season fits so perfectly with their story and Marianne really has this unconditional love for Connell.

It was during the premier of the Willow music video that Taylor was answering questions about the album, and giving facts out, and said that Dorothea was the opposite perspective of Tis the Damn Season and that she felt that they went to the same school as James and Betty. So yes, definitely is the same story line! 🙂

"Brand new tires" implies that he hid Esty's body in bush or swamp and left tracks behind, SO, he buys new ones so that cops can't directly link her death to him. Which poses a question. What did he do with his old tires?

Okay I NEED to know if anyone else thinks this was intentional by Taylor: “Honey, when I’m above the trees / I see this for what it is” -does for what it is sound like “forest” to you? Like, see the forest for the trees? When I’m above the trees, I see this forest. Also, in Coney Island, “rogue that coaxed you,” doesn’t that sound like rollercoaster??

I honestly want her to make a mini short film on each album. Like, have that be the second cd in the album. One is the tracks and the other one is the short film. She can write her own fiction dude. We already know she's great at storytelling so why not create a short story and bring it to life? Can someone please pass this idea to her? I love the worlds she creates for us, how she sets the whole scene up and we're just here seeing it in our mind. I wanna see that translate over to film. PLEASE. That would be so out of this world for me.

I think Dorothea is criminally underrated, First off the topic of the song being sung by a lover to a person who has moved away to pursue stardom and how Taylor portrays such desperately but also acceptance to the reality is just so great. The vocals just bring such a fullness to this song paired with the hummingish talking she does in the song gives you a chance to breath and just lose yourself in the harmonies. The last thing is the instrumentals that just go along so well with the rest of the song, but the almost electronic sounds that you hear in the sort of long pauses at the end just give you such a warm feeling I can't explain. I find this her best song in her entire discography and probably of all time which is why i'm so passionate about this song to this degree. Great video by the way!

Personally in Tolerate it, I took the lyrics “use my best colors for your portrait” to a completely different place. I thought maybe when she describes him to people (his portrait which is like who he is) she uses his better traits like her “best colors”, her best words, better memories they shared, she shows only the good side of their relationship, which is probably when they’re with other people and not alone.
@elliemosteller2938
@elliemosteller2938 3 года назад
I relate to this song so much but it’s interesting because I never interpreted the chorus the way you did! I always thought of it as “wait by the door like I’m just a kid” as in waiting by the door excited for him to get home and then “use my best colors for your portrait” as in she used her best colors painting a portrait of him…so like she’s giving her all and her best and he just tolerates it and couldn’t care less.

@@didemuca7598 I understand this is an old comment but I can’t think of a single way CLM is a sapphic story... if you connect the lyrics “oh I thought this is gonna be one of those things” and “the old *men* that I’ve swindled” the narrator is saying that they have swindled multiple men, and thought this current relationship was going to unfold the same way. Not trying to be a hater or anything, I definitely can see other songs like Dorothea describe a wlw relationship but cowboy like me is clearly not in my opinion..

with the whole hindsight rn of the eras tour and her performing tolerate it the way she does and the whole thing with joe, i just had to come back here and write this because i was just thinking about the song and the whole bridge and was creating this whole image in my head and then i was trying to remember how the song starts (because i don’t really listen to it bc its so depressing) and when i remember it’s “i sit and watch you reading with your head low, i wake and watch you breathing with your eyes closed” my mind was immediately like wait a minute! i know a song of hers that the first two lines end with “now i’ve read all of the books beside your bed” and “now i wake up in the night and watch you breathe” HELP no one can tell me it wasn’t intentional. i’d marry you with paper rings to you just tolerate me? it even has some parallels with you’re losing me. and the way the song just goes back to the beginning in the end feels like that on and off. like “do i throw out everything we built or keep it?”

When happiness starts those first few lyrics, not only does "honey when I'm above the trees, I see this for what it is" mean that she can see the relationship clearly, it also references back to seven when she says "please picture me in the trees I hit my peak at seven feet," and I realized that on happiness she's talking about how she is past her young innocence and now understands what a real relationship is supposed to look like and what love is. She is "above" this past (the trees, or her childhood innocence).

'Dappled with the flickers of light, From the dress I wore at midnight, Leave it all behind.' This also reminds me of the Cinderella story, where she wears the beautiful dress but at midnight it is all over, the night with the prince comes to an abrupt end, and she has to leave it all behind. She becomes herself again, back to basics, without the glamour, the fairytale is over, the spell has stopped working.

Soooo the visualization I see when Tolerate It is ending and we have that time to comprehend... it's not only a Taylor thing to end it with a line that started, but its a line that brings us to the reality of her still sitting, meaning the entire song is a journey that sonically rewinds to a point where a decision is going to be made, and don't know what that decision is... wow.
