"you were in a band when I was born" is such a powerful lyric, and Phoebe has such an emotive voice you can hear the anger, pain but also release in her voice in that line. She's so talented and I'm glad to be around to get to listen to her art
The thing that always gets me is in motion sickness Phoebe says “I hate you for what you did, and I miss you like a little kid.” She decides to use “and” instead of “, but I miss you like a little kid.” The word “but” in that context has somewhat of an apologetic tone to it. By using “and” instead of “but” shows that she’s aware of his behavior and she doesn’t except it anymore.
yes, i have fathomed that a while ago. it could have been better with 'but' because that's how it's usually constructed, but that simple conjunction can simply make the whole sentence a different one.

it would be so cool if you guys checked out Five Seconds Flat by lizzy macalpine. Lizzy is like a cross between phoebe and olivia rodrigo/gracie abrams and her lyricism is amazing.
One of my favorite aspects of Phoebe's songwriting is her ability to turn something absolutely mundane into an insanely poetic lyric. Like she can literally write about light pollution or walking to the nearest CVS on a weekday and it'll give Album of the Year vibes.
my absolute favourite song on this album is Georgia like PLS "if i fix you will you hate me" KILLS ME EVERY TIME. I think that it hits harder because as someone who always feels the need to fix people its like you can try so hard to "fix" someone when really you're just changing who they are and that can cause them to feel so much resentment towards you even though you think you're helping them
Fun fact: The plane sound in Smoke Signals after she sings the line about Bowie was actually sampled from an old obscure Bowie instrumental from the 70s called Moss Garden
About would you rather, phoebe has a very impactful speech from when she won the trailblazer billboard award where she talks about her mother and experience with domestic abuse ❤ Also phoebe has some offensive singles and covers (waiting room, the gold, sidelines, etc) that I would love to see y’all react to. She’s also the member of some great bands with music.
Guys, Phoebe has more stuff to check out. She's part of two other bands, boygenius and Better Oblivion Community Center. The male singer on "Would You Rather" is Conor Oberst, the front man of Bright Eyes who are a pretty influential band. Phoebe and Conor formed Better Oblivion together and they have one album which is quite good. Phoebe is also part of boygenius with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker (both of whom are also very much worth hearing. They're both incredible songwriters on the same level of Phoebe). boygenius have one EP from 2018 which is amazing and they actually will drop their debut album at the end of March.
to tie this a bit further into the Taylor Swift Cinematic Universe: the strings on this album (and on Punisher) were done by Rob Moose, who is friends with Aaron Dessner (and Justin Vernon, and a whole bunch of artists in their circle), and Rob did the strings for "last great american dynasty," "exile" and "hoax" on Folklore
after a little research for the “you were in a band when i was born” lyric. if this is all still about ryan adams and phoebe. the 2 met when phoebe was 20 and ryan was 40. so very much significantly older!!

I think if you ever want to explore more content like Phoebe, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker are the way to go! The two of them with Phoebe have a supergroup together by the name of boygenius and have an EP out, and the first three singles from their upcoming debut album coming out this march! Another artist who's storytelling you may love is Ethel Cain, she released her debut album last year, "Preacher's Daughter" and its a film in the form of an album, its considered one of the best albums of 2022
i admire how spot on you guys are without listening to this before or looking into things much before you listened. you both are the right people phoebe needs to listen to her music. you both understand her poetic mind like not many people do. i ive never met anyone who thinks about lyrics like i do and you guys make me feel like im not alone because knowing so mu8ch about phoebe and hearing you guys say this stuff right after hearing her lyrics is amazing how accurate it is. phoebe is my favorite artist of all time im just so obsessed with her. i was nodding my head to everything you guys were saying because it was so accurate. you even taught me some things which i felt wasnt possible for her music LOL. love u both.
Shes released a few versions of Georgia over the years, but my favorite is a live performence thats on RU-vid. I don't remember what it's called but she's in a red flannel and it's singing georgia (its amazing), I'd recommend giving it a listen and maybe reacting to it. I'd love to see that!!

Loved this 💕 Love all the Lizzy McAlpine comments too - Five Seconds Flat was my album of last year after Midnights. She's so brilliant I think you'd love it. Also, not a reaction suggestion really but do you know Weyes Blood? Titanic Rising is such a fantastic album and I think you'd like it. It's very Carpenters/70s sounding and absolutely stunning.

I would love for you guys to react to Lizzy McAlpine. She is truly a treasure. In terms of material, she has her first album called “give me a minute”, then released a live EP called “when the world stopped moving”, and recently came out with her 2nd album called “five seconds flat.” HIGHLY recommend all of them, but “five seconds flat” is a great introductory album. The other two projects are more acoustic-forward, but still beautiful.
I just love all your takes on every song. I personally love Stranger in the Alps. Although Punisher is a much more cohesive album overall, S.I.T.A. has the appeal of being a collection of individually unique songs.
Definitely would recommend reacting to MUNA as well, they are signed to Phoebe's label Saddest Factory Records, and she even features on a song from their most recent album, also called MUNA. They are more synth/electronic pop (Think 1989 but a bit more 80s vibes) with excellent lyricism. They are also opening for Taylor in July and did a really good cover of August. Anything of their three albums is a good starting place, About U has a much darker sound, MUNA is bright/celebratory, and Saves the World is an excellent middle ground with a strong throughline of emotional healing. When you all were talking about the difference in production with SITA and Punisher omfg pls the production for Lizzy’s album is probably some of the best album sound production I’ve ever heard. a very beautiful thing about scott street is how the outro was a continuation of the conversation in the second verse, with one of them most likely ending it with the line, “anyway, don’t be a stranger.” she begins the song by she was feeling like a stranger as she walked near that place they spent so much time together and i’m assuming she was recalling how that was how it presumably ended. devastating and beautiful callback 🤍
i am so incredibly late to your channel and thus, this video but for me personally, georgia is kind of like idealizing this boy, that love, and being scared of going for it and being with him because she thinks she'll fuck it up or he wont see her for who she truly is. it's my favorite song on this album its so so so good. "if you find me, will you know me?" is like when we meet, are you really going to see me for all that i am, flaws included? and then "will you take me or will you fall?" will you take me as i am or will you just fall away. and i think that relates very well to the second pre chorus where she says "i know he needs you, youre all that he sees" like referring to that other version of her
For smoke signals, I was thinking the lights on the street putting the stars to death may also reference the flashes of the paparazzi on the street draining the life from celebrities. Or killing their private life I guess. Also, I strongly recommend checking out the live version of Georgia! I prefer it to the studio version

I tend to think of this album as my benchmark for what I consider to be a 10/10 album. I actually like it more than punisher, the whole album flows so well and it's just all round incredible writing- special shout out to Scott Street, probably in my top 5 songs of all time 🤩🛐
I really hope y'all will react to MUNA as well. They're my favorite band. They're so deeply underrated and they make such fantastic pop music, I think they deserve more recognition

Okay just going off of what I've always taken Georgia to mean, I feel like she's talking to this person's mom (even though Georgia is for the state) about the love she has for them and how amazing they seem to her. She's asking her that if she finds her, will she know her? As in the boy has told his mom about her meaning there's a future in the relationship. She's asking her if she'd take her into her family or have them fall apart because of the "close" relationship they have as mother and son ("and sometimes when he looks at me, i know he needs you, you're all that he sees"). Phoebe has also mentioned this song is about being head over heels about someone who's kind of lukewarm about you. So even though I can see the "mother" figure, I think to it's core it's about being so in love with someone and constantly needing validation, whether from that person or their life as a whole.
Under the same music label is Mitski (Tho idk what to recommend, every single album is a different vibe) Tho she has violins in a good bit of her songs and has alt rock, indie, art pop, Americana, acoustic, ballads, orchestras, etc
