Hello and welcome to this weird crevasse of the internet where we get really excited about music (particularly Taylor Swift) and break down our favourite albums and songs. Our names are Bonny and Emily, and our aim with these videos is to share our love for music and also share context and understanding around the songs, by highlighting breaking down the lyrics, melodies and production. We are so happy to have created this little community that is just as unhinged as us when it comes to music 🤪

I felt like the romanticsm in ultraviolence was such a powerful depiction of how blinded you can be to abuse and dysfunction when your so desperate for love and affection.

The line in Ultraviolence "he hit me and it felt like a kiss" is a reference to the song by the 60's group The Crystals "He hit me (it felt like a kiss)" and it will always reminds me of that interview with Amy Winehouse where she says "The Crystals had a song called 'He hit me and it felt like a kiss', like thats messed up, theres only a certain percentage of people that would understand what thats about, most people would be like... 'How dare you promote domestic violence'... but to me I'm like - I know what you mean, I knew exactly what you mean". and Lana actually commented on a post on Instagram that reposted this interview saying "I know exactly what you mean, I knew exactly what you mean". I think its also a big reason to why this song is be seen as controversial, but of course it is, because only a small number of people who have gone through that would understand what that feeling is like.

Guys when lorde was popping off in the industry and getting fame she marked herself as someone different, cooler than other artists. she did a bunch of controversial tweets, shes the one who twitted that lana is promoting abuse and toxic relationships, making girls feel bad about themselves and teaching a bad way of thinking. with the lady gaga beef, she (lana) did another song that dissed her completely (unreleased), so that song was mostly about Lorde, also she released it pretty quickly after the tweet. not even a year later.

The song is not about Lorde. It’s about Lady Gaga. Lana airs the same exact complaints in the song So Legit that she aired in the quote they read. So Legit is much older than Lorde’s career, and Lana explicitly used Gaga’s birth name in that song. So the through line is there. The quote is about Gaga, not Lorde.

despite all controversies, this album is “problematic” due to the talks of addiction, abuse and etc. the public doesn’t know anything about lana hence why they were (still are) holding her accountable for “romanticizing” abuse but the way lana copes is through her singing as she is a victim of domestic abuse, addiction, use of drugs especially at a young age, and etc.
@ginack19
@ginack19 Месяц назад
yes . i take it as she just got so used to the abuse that she became desensitised to it and didn't know the difference between being hurt or a kiss bcus her idea of love has been so misconstrued with the violence she has experienced.
@DarthMadV
@DarthMadV Месяц назад
When men sing and rap about drugs and murder, in any way, nobody cares. People are just holding women to a double standard. This is such a real album that many people relate to. Drugs and addiction are just a part of self-medicating for many people, and that's okay. It's life, and part of that persons story. Abusive relationships are sooo common, and she's just singing about hers from her mindset at the time, and that's art. I'm so happy this album exists. It's so unique and part of her story. If people think this album is problematic, they must have never known someone who refuses to leave a toxic relationship, or even acknowledge that they are being abused. I don't see the problem with a woman expressing her perspective when that's what she is/was dealing with. It provides insight. It's real stuff.
@JustAHorrorShow
@JustAHorrorShow Месяц назад
People always ask survivors why they stayed with their abusers for so long or why they would even protect their abusers... but then when people like Lana try to actually explain it, people try to shut them down and silence them. It's endlessly frustrating. Also, as a woman, Lana is expected to be everybody's mom and role model. As a woman she's supposed to "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" because supposedly teenage girls are just so dumb and easily influenced to get into abusive relationships solely because their favorite songs are about abuse. It's not like the real people in our real lives could possibly have a greater influence over a young girl than some songs.
@theodillon3216
@theodillon3216 Месяц назад
Anyone who is taking relationship cues from Lana is also just dumb
@DarthMadV
@DarthMadV Месяц назад
@@JustAHorrorShow I feel like it's quite a normal perspective for young girls to have. A song isn't going to change that. Time and age will... If it doesn't well, it's not the songs fault. At the end of the day, it's the individual's choice to leave or stay in a relationship. Their loved ones can try and try to make them see the light but a lot of the time it just does not work. People can be very oppositional to that kind of stuff. Especially when emotionally attached to something.

I had just turned 15 when Ultraviolence came out, and I will be 25 on June 7th. It’s been almost a decade since this album debuted and I can still remember how it changed my brain chemistry, how it touched my very soul. It’s hard to believe I’m not still the same young girl whenever I listen to this album. It immediately takes me back to the first time I heard it, flying through the streets, windows down, hot summer air rushing past, drunk and sweet and sad in the way only a fifteen year old can be. I was so fucking miserable back then but somehow I miss it so much it makes me ache. Not a single skip, this album truly has no misses. So glad you girls are finally reacting to it

I always found that this album was inspired by Jack Kerouac's "On the Road", as it seems to take you from the East Coast to the West Coast of America. Jack Kerouac (the writer of "On the Road"), was one of the pioneers of the Beat Generation. She continuously mentions the Beat Generation and Beat poetry throughout the album, in particular in Brooklyn Baby ("I get down to Beat poetry"). The Beat Generation brought about a new style of writing that attempted to challenge social norms and standards, to push boundaries, and to be bold and experimental. Even the lyrical content of this album is very reminiscent of Beat writing. The lyric that sells this idea for me in particular is: "I'm talking about my generation, talking about that newer nation, and if you don't like it, you can beat it, beat it, baby".

The LORDE rumoured feud started because Lorde said: She’s great, but I listened to that Lana Del Rey record and the whole time I was just thinking it’s so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know: "I’m nothing without you." This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff. That’s not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear." “When I wrote Royals, I was listening to a lot of rap, but also a lot of Lana Del Rey, because she’s obviously really hip-hop influenced, but all those references to expensive alcohol, beautiful clothes and beautiful cars - I was thinking, ‘This is so opulent, but it’s also bullshit.'” I suppose people didn’t like the fact she criticised lana but then became wealthy herself and I suppose her aesthetic has been similar in some ways to lana in the early days of both their careers.

55:10 the whole beef started when Lorde said in an interview that Lana Del Rey sets a bad example for young girls, with her lyrics that are not so “progressive”, citing that the song “Without You” was a “toxic” way to think in a relationship. And she also said that she wrote “Royals” as a rebuttal to Lana’s “National Anthem”, because according to her that type of glorification of luxuriousness was just “unrelatable”. I think that in the verse “Lay me down tonight in my diamonds and pearls” she’s kinda making fun of herself in a sarcastic way because of what Lorde said. And the whole copying her style thing, I think she’s referring to Lorde saying that her music isn’t relatable but doing the “same” tumblr girl thing like her (“I'm a dragon, you're a whore. Don't even know what you're good for. Mimicking me's a fucking bore to me”)

Loved the reaction! I believe Fucked My Way Up To The Top is about Lorde, bc back then (if i remember correctly) Lorde, when asked in an interview, said that Lana's lyricism (on Born To Die) was bullshit or something. Aka, she threw shade. But then people started seeing similarities in music style between them and when this song came out it was linked to Lorde.

10 years later and this cult classic is still being discovered. Whew! Also FMWUTTT could truly be about either Lorde or Gaga. Lana and Gaga had a similar manager/person who discovered them in NYC for the briefest moment in time, and Lana felt slighted by Gaga enough to write an unreleased diss track “So Legit”. Lana also was upset by Lorde dissing her a few times in interviews saying Lana’s music was bad for young girls. Also people did constantly say Lorde was Lana’s artistic child. We’ll probably never truly know.

1:17:28 - there are 2 groups of people in the US who use the metric system more than the general population - 1) scientists and engineers and 2) drug dealers and their customers. Drugs are packaged and sold in a mish-mash of metric and imperial units. In general, small amounts of drugs are sold by the gram. The next step up is usually an ‘eighth’ (used when dealing in cannabis or psilocybin mushrooms) or an ‘8-ball’ (used when dealing in powdered drugs - often times just referred to as a ‘ball’, with the 8 being implied) - both terms refer to 1/8 of an ounce, which is equivalent to 3.5 g (using the approximate conversion of 1 oz = 28 g). A side note about heroin - for whatever reason, often times, heroin does not get packaged by the ounce, but rather in 24 or 25 g batches called a ‘piece’ which is then treated as an equivalent to an ounce. So a ball of heroin ends up being 3 g (1/8 of a piece), a quarter is 6 g (1/4 of a piece), and a half is 12 g (1/2 of a piece). Moving up, we have the ‘quarter’ and ‘half’ for 1/4 oz (7 g) and 1/2 oz (14 g) and then a full oz (28 g), which goes by several different slang terms - ‘o’ and ‘zip’ being 2 of the most common. Next up, is the 1/4 pound (4 oz), 1/2 pound (8 oz), and pound (16 oz). Anything larger than a pound, gets measured by the kilogram, which is generally an insanely large amount of drugs, so it is only used by the manufacturers, traffickers, and high level dealers.

About the "Jim" in Ultraviolence song, I feel like listeners too often think of "man" while listening to Lana's songs, while she frequently writes about her RELATIONSHIP with addiction or fame or city (or it can be both, haing a double meaning). So Jim is probably the alcohol and her addiction (Jim Beam) I heard some interpretations that also points to cult leader Jim Jones who lived around 50s - 60s, since it suits the period Ultraviolence sound seems inspired by and since Lana said that about her being in a cult. Also, this album is JUST NOW getting it's deserved reviews and it makes me want to cry because FINALLYYY - like, for me it was a love from the first listen, but also FINALLY because it means our society is changing, it is ok to depict the point o view of a victim, to BE a victim and talk about it, it's the abuser who should be ashamed. I remember at the time it was released the songs that were called feminist had to be empowering, but it almost screams toxic positivity to me and it narrows down the feminism, it excludes those who are still struggling, it erases the trauma and the process of healing. ALSO! I haven't seen anyone saying this in the comments yet, but during the time of releasing this album there was a drama with label: "Auerbach openly criticized her label's role on the creative output of the record. He stated the label threatened with not extending the recording session for Ultraviolence any longer unless they heard something from the record.[7] After they sent them [the label] the rough mix of what they had at the moment they were unhappy about the results. They even threatened Lana the record wasn't going to be out unless she worked with "the Adele producer", who most fans speculate to be Paul Epworth, long time producer on Adele records, who also reworked previously leaked demo of "Black Beauty" to fit in more with the sound of the record. According to Auerbach, after Epworth listened to the same rough mix he loved it and stated the album was amazing and that he wouldn't do anything to change it. His words may have influenced the label's own opinions as they changed their mind suddenly and let Lana release the record" Plus in Rolling Stone interview Auerbach emphasized that "she sang live with a seven-piece band. That's the whole record - a seven-piece band with her singing live. It was crazy"

10/10 comment - I learned new things and love how you explained the shifts happening in our society. And especially the part about “it’s the abuser who should be ashamed” bc PERIODT. It’s unfathomable to me how our society has been so fixated on questioning a victim’s reasoning - for staying, for leaving, for hurting, for speaking up, for BEING A VICTIM - meanwhile the abuser just gets to slip and slide and slither away into the darkness to continue their poor behavior with little to no questions asked, accountability taken, or repercussions whatsoever. All responsibility is placed on the victim and it’s DIS.GUST.ING. But thank GOD things are shifting…ever so slightly…but something is better than nothing. Anyway, rant over ☺️ and thank you AGAIN for your comment. So very well-said. 👏🏼💯

She worked on this album in NASHVILLE and at Electric Lady with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and a some of the songs on the album (like Cruel World) are just impromptu streams of consciousness which is soooo iconic. The majority of the album was recorded with a live band. She's never done that again. This album is farrrrr too special wowowowow

I'm 2 minutes into the video and I just couldn't wait to say that i'm so happy that you guys have finally reacted to this iconic album. It came out when I was 15 and has since been one of my favorite albums of all time. I also correlated to when times felt simpler (tumblr, being an adolescent, growing up, talking to boys, etc) so it does hold a massive amount of nostalgia for me.

In a clockwork orange, this idea of ultraviolence basically referred to extreme violence that existed especially inside young men and was caused by the effects of Television, video games, modern culture (of the time)...

The way i clicked soo fast, it was almost faster than Taylor releases masterpieces:))So, halsey announced her new album and i think she is a part of tscu and she makes masterpieces all the time. I think you guys can react to that and even her older albums cause like i said they're incredible-thematically, musically and lyrically just superior!! I also enjoy with every content you make, thank you so much for that. Lana, Taylor, now we're gonna have sabrina and gracie too. Just wow!!! What a year for music really
