I’m just kinda repeating part of what the others have said. With the alclad chrome I would suggest a little more psi and spray a little farther back from your work piece, with a faster back and forth motion making sure to start spraying before the edge of your work piece and not stoping till after the edge of the work piece. And the amount of paint you sprayed on in the first coat was probably what you should have used for all three coats combined. It takes a bit of experimenting but as good as it looked when you sprayed it, it can look even better.
Nice video! Audio was a little quiet. It looked like your coats were a little heavy, I've heard for the best shine with the alclad you want to go as light as possible. Great comparison though, the AK's got nothing on alclad
Thanks for the comment. Yes my audio definitely needs some improvement. I did also spray heavier than I wanted. I may try to do more comparisons of Metal paint and will have to spray lighter on the next video.
Wow, great video. I was just about to shoot some Alclad Aluminum on some rims...saw your video first for a quick reference. Very, very helpful. Thank you. SUBSCRIBED.
Thanks for the comment and even more for the subscription. It makes me happy that I may have saved some time/money for some of my viewers. I appreciate any recommendations or suggestions for future videos.
@@weekendhobbyist ....I just finished spraying some 1/25 big rig rims, followed your process to the letter. Holy smokes.....absolutely beautiful, just beautiful results !!!!!!! Thank you once again Weekend Hobbyist.....if you don't mind I'm going to give you and your channel a big shout out and recommendation tonght on my video ..I'll have my finished 1/25 tire and rim setup. I'm sold on Alclad. Thank you.
I have used both and gotten the exact same results but in my opinion, the key to reflectivity on any of these is using 2K clear. It will look more reflective and also more durable.
Good video but, It's recommanded to polish the AK colors to get the miror effect that everyboby wants ;-) Also We have a big difference with a black gloss primer...
Interesting comparison buddy. The key is to go very light so that you can get the reflection happening from the black. I was a fan of Alclad but now use Molotow chrome refills through my airbrush with super light coats and I find it gives a better chrome finish out of all the chrome paint. The key though is to not touch it for a couple of weeks and let it flash off as the chrome can rub off.
This was very helpful ! I just tried my first set of resin wheels for the usacc group build and painted the wheels with testors aluminum.. Love the wheels, hate them color they turned out. I'll be trying that Alclad very soon! You got a sub sir. If you watch my vid you'll see what i mean
Have you ever used gloss white, gloss light gray or dark gray as a base coat. I realize you videotaped a pretty small sample and it may look different in person, I wonder if the aluminum affect might look brighter with a lighter base coat.
Nice comparison. I noticed your Alclad gloss black base has a little orange peel going on. If you try adding Mr Leveling Thinner to it (~10-15%) and spray ~25psi, the issue should go away. I personally add ~20% volume of MLT to my gloss black base before spraying and all of my test spoons dry to a smooth, reflective surface that I can see my own face on. I know you weren't really going for the mirror finish chrome look, but it the MLT really helps the gloss black base get that ultra smooth finish.
Thanks for the tip. In this test I was trying to keep it straight forward to compare each paints results. But for future use I’ll definitely trying adding in Leveling Thinner. I love that stuff! Thanks 🙏🏼
I really wish people would learn how to use an airbrush before doing these kinds of videos. It really effects the end result. Barbatos Rex is the man when it comes to doing chrome correctly
Thanks for sharing. You should give green stuff world chrome a try. Love the stuff. Easy clean up and very reflective. They have airbrush and brushable types.
@@weekendhobbyist excellent. You have to kind of glob it in, not brush it. I’ve recently shot it straight out of the airbrush too, and it came out great. Very surprised, and I doesn’t require gloss black undercoat. No need to thin either, and clean up us with alcohol.
I have not tried brushing on the AK but have on the Vallejo Metals. For a small part it might be OK but the quality of airbrushing it is a lot better. I wouldn’t brush it on any part that wasn’t small. Please let me know how it turns out. Thanks.
I can’t find the comment anymore but “Phernann” asked if I could use alcohol to clean the airbrush after using the AK XTreme. I think yes because it’s an enamel. Anyone else here tried this? Thanks.
@@Drazorig2 I think it should be fine but make sure you let it dry a few days to one week and do a test first on a part first and not smack in the middle.
You used way to much alclad chome over the black Mist that stuff on .. ive sprayed a ton of it ..problem is its not durable If you go over it with aqua gloss it dulls .
I was wondering if you take on any jobs doing this I have somethings that need to be done I have no airbrush experience or airbrush can pay for the job thanks let me know please
Hi Q Dog. I would say unfortunately not because of my time constraints but feel free to email me about what you need. Maybe I can point you in the right direction.
Hi, I just did a test and it polished well making it shinier but not necessarily “more reflective”. As for polishing I think the Mr. Metal Colors polish well but I haven’t tested yet.
I’ve successfully used Alclad chrome for years and in my opinion you sprayed way too much chrome Alclad on them and you need to spray a bit further away. Just trying to help.
The chrome needs to be applied over a gloss black not a silver, your comparison is flawed with the spoons. Alclads are great, AK are great as well you really can't go wrong with either, although I am partial to Alclad chrome and candies.
I just realized my video is a little unclear. I had applied over gloss black base for all of the paints but I think I didn’t show the process for some of them. Definitely yes have to apply over gloss black.
