ALESIS Andromeda A6 Demo & Review 

Pretty sure alesis nearly went broke a few times, theyre products are bit hit and miss

Alesis today is pretty far from the company it was back in the early 2000s. (bought by inMusic years ago I think)

Yeah no, what they need to fix is the fucking ASIC voices that die out of fucking nowhere and can't be replaced.

@@Em0killer13 A new version with more robust encoders and updated ASICs that won't fail would be nice.

@@Em0killer13 they don't die. I've never encountered with one with a dead voice or something. There was a bad batch that has tuning problems but that's it, they replaced then with good ones. Look on eBay or reverb and you'll see that there's no broken A6s.

@Ig Oluffson jumping knobs is other subject. There's lot of synths that have that problem.. specially if you don't use them frequently. It happens to mine from time to time, but I turn them for 20/30 seconds and it fixes. It also happens to my Waldorf XT and Nord G2, and no one seems to bother, but people do with the A6... The A6 has an internal resolution of 16 bit, so they are extremely sensitive... The smallest movement can make the knobs jump, so it's important to turn the knobs from time to time even if you don't use the synth. Same thing with my other knobby synths.

@Ig Oluffson the only software bug I've seen is one related to the envelope representation on the screen. Something weird happens, but the envelopes always work fine. You just go to another page and come back and it fixes. Having said that, that bug probably happend to me like 10 times in 15 years.

That's very unlikely. At the time, at Alesis, nobody really knew anything about making an analogue synthesizer. So they hired an external team of engineers. I can't remember their names but as far as I know the Andromeda was their only project. In reality it's build around an FPGA, except for the VCO and VCF there isn't much analog inside. Like all envelopes are digital. It has some serious issues with these pre-mix pre-filter stages. I bought mine a year after its release and paid about half from the original 8K. Of all the synths I've ever had, the Andromeda I totally not regret to have sold. It's not fat in way of Moog, Oberheim, Jupiter or anything you might expect, the different filter types are not that different either. Seriously, it's not that great.

I wish someone did make a VST circuit emulation of this beast. Best VSTs of A6 are sample-based from UVI Synth Anthology and also in Omnisphere.
