I am sure the producers didn't really care. At that point it was almost a guaranty that someone would win a car on the next round anyways with that much time on the clock, then they would just reset the clock back to base time. So it is highly likely that they never really gave away an extra car by doing this. In addition there was clearly a technical difficulty and when mistakes happen on a game show you have to default to the benefit of the contestant to make sure that it is fair. Now they didn't have to let her pick any of the cars, they could have decided to just let her choose between the cars that were there when the monitor went down. Was nice of them to let her pick what she wanted.
Well, apparently there was a monitor close to them; that’s the one that malfunctioned and the next nearest monitor was that one 30 feet or so away-and it would be difficult either to move it closer with the clock running or to stop the clock a second time.
I think this was early in the run. By the tail end of the run (90-91) they were flying by opening numbers on the board. It was slow at the start of the series though yeah
yikes, so many problems, glad she got the car that was only fair, way too many distractions it probably threw her off. You wanna believe whoever was responsible for the monitor and whoever was operating the board got reamed out by the producer....that was a costly error.
I know this is *_very_* old but yes. The bigger mistake was when the monitor went out. People forget that the Concentration board at this time was now computer (probably an MS-DOS machine) operated.
It was any car she wanted. I do remember seeing the episode and they messed up badly. Plus standards and practices would have been displeased if it wasn't resolved quickly.
Tubewings I would have made the same decision she did, seeing as the Renault GTA convertible, one of the priciest cars at stake, was the only convertible at stake.
Kind of like on “Jeopardy!” when Alex doesn’t like to penalize a contestant for an error that was made like Alex not explaining the category, not asking for “More Specific,” a clue that’s not worded right or accidentally saying the response before he calls on you.
Alex is like: "When I find the dickhead on the controls for that Concentration board, Imma pull his entrails out through his nose." Also: Nobody else is going to mention the fact that there was a car named the GTA? LOL
While I don't disagree with giving her the car, I don't think I would've let her pick. There were two unmatched cars on the board... the Skyhawk and the Samurai... had she won legit, she would've won either of them so I would've given her the choice between those two.
@erikdraven1731 ...and if my father's experience with owning a Renault in the 80s is any indication, she probably wound up regretting the choice she did make. :-)
