He studied story structure through the work of Joseph Campbell 15 years before he won the Oscar. No excuses. He doesn’t make them nor does he accept them from others. Figure it out. To Kobe: everything is figureoutable. He learned about business from the greats. He’s not afraid of being a student of the games he plays. Conversations with Oprah, Marc Parker, Tim Cook, Jony Ive…all giants in the world of business. A-Rod had the same mentality when he got to spend time with Cal Ripken Jr. He studied him. He emulated him. He was such an enthusiastic student that he exhausted Cal himself after 10 hours of conversation. There’s many common themes here: Be an (obsessive) student of the game you’re playing. Obstacles are no excuse for giving up. Mistakes are learning opportunities. Ask for help. Be helpful. Live in the moment and master your craft but also keep an eye towards the future AROD and Kobe both knew the wouldn’t play their respective sports forever. These insights are highly applicable to any endeavor one wants to pursue.
